This hat is extremely warm and is made of, in my opinion, the perfect materials for a cold weather hat. To the best of my knowledge, the only materials available that still retain the ability to insulate when completely saturated with water are wool and polar fleece. You lose the most body heat from the top of the head, the hands and the feet. This hat will make sure your head stays warm even in the worst of conditions. I have an extra in the emergency kit in my truck right next to the wool blankets, wool gloves and wool socks.

My only complaint would be that I wish there were more color options, but that is truly a minor complaint.

If you spend any time out in the cold just do yourself a favor and get one.

I generally wear this hat on cold and windy weather and it great about the ear flaps. It doesn't fit all head shapes but it definitely works for me. It's got a great fleece liner inside so the outer wool does not rub against your head. The inner lining should go farther down more so it doesn't touch the forehead. There is still alittle itch but not as noticable when you have it on for a longer time.

An avid hiker in the cascades and eastern Oregon, this hat beats the cold and wind. I also wear it on the southern Oregon coast where we live, going out to Cape Blanco where the winds hit 110 mph. Great hat. I didn't think that last year's similar hat could get better, but it has. It has a full micro-fleece liner unlike the Jiri hat. The latter is good for cold days, but it's out-classed by the Everest Designs Sherpa Earflap Hat. Thank you again REI. Great product! Hope to see this for years to come. I bought four for family last year and other nephews and nieces want them this year.

I wear this hat almost every day in the cold seasons. Pound for pound, this is the warmest thing I can put on no matter what the temperature is. The earflaps and dangly things even help the hat stay on when I'm pedaling through a headwind if i zip my shell around them. I've worn it down to 15F and it was just as comfortable then as it was at 50F, although it lets a little wind in through the earflaps if its strong enough.

My only complaint is that it can be difficult to wash. Handwashing doesn't get it super clean, and it takes forever to dry, while it feels like it shrinks after machine washing - even on a front-load wool cycle. I haven't even tried to machine dry it yet.

This hat will remain in my warm clothes pile for frigid days and snow play, but I'll probably be getting something else thats easier to care for to use on a daily basis.
