I carried this meal on a 4 day wilderness backpacking trip. We stayed around 12,000' in elevation so, per the instructions, I gave the meal extra soaking time (a total of 25 min, if I recall correctly). It seemed to re-hydrate properly, the texture of the meal was just fine.

It portioned out into two adequate (but not abundant) meals. It seemed as though the nutrition was there, but the taste simply was not. It tasted like plain white rice with a splash of gravy. We had to add a lot of salt, pepper, and some tabasco to give it some flavor. At that point we put it on tortillas and rolled it up and it turned out alright.... but just "alright".

Overall, I feel like you could get something with more flavor for the money, but if you really have your heart set on pepper steak and rice then take your own seasonings along and enjoy.

Out of all the freeze-dried meals I purchased from REI, the AlpineAir brand was the worst for taste. Not only was the meal very watery (you pretty much have to strain it), but it lacked any taste. I had to load it with salt, pepper and tomatoes in order to to give it any flavor!

This product is delicious, cost effective and easy to prepare. Back packing food is challenging when allergies/celiac disease affect your diet. This meal made it easy! Kudos to AlpineAire for producing a delicious meal AND making it without wheat fillers.
