Bug netting not required
My family camped in west Michigan last week. Lots of mosquitos. I treated all of our hammocks with Sawyer Permethrin spray. Not only would the mosquitos not bite through the hammock but they wouldn't even fly in the open top. I do need to correct the REI associate who sold this item to me though. I asked him if permethrim was an insecticide as well as a repellant. He said "no, that REI wouldn't sell it if it killed insects." Well, permethrim IS an insecticide. I personally have no issues with killing bugs that feed on me but if you are concerned about the ethics of limited chemical warfare on biting insects, you'll need to try a different product.
Bugs away!
I bought this for a backpacking trip near the PCT in Oregon. I used it to spray my tent, pack, socks and pants. I also used a net and an Ex Officio BugsAway mesh jacket. For a three day trip into the woods, I only had two bites on my legs. And I only used spray on my hands. Pretty amazing how well it worked. I typically am very susceptible to bites and develop welts, so I was incredibly pleased. I would recommend using gloves when applying, as it is hard to not get in contact with your skin. It is also a little hard to determine the 3 oz they recommend for each article of clothing. Perhaps having an indicator line on the bottle would be helpful.
Awesome
I bought this before visiting a friend in Ghana. I coated all my clothes before the visit, and used Deet on unprotected skin. She got eaten alive, I only had a few bites. She got Malaria. I did not. I wouldn't use this for every day bugs because of the chemicals, but it was certainly better than Malaria.
Works Great but deadly for cats
Works perfectly! Especially good for socks/trousers to kill ticks if they jump on you. Also excellent for packs/sleeping pads to keep creepy crawlers away. Just be warned that this is toxic for cats!
Permethrin Insect Repellent!
I have used Permethrin spray on my clothing over the past several years and it has worked great to prevent ticks and other insects from remaining attached to my clothing when working outdoors on our wooded property (ticks are a big problem around here). I read I can also use this on my shoes so ordered the latest bottle to also use the spray on three pairs that I use out on property and a pair on bike rides in the country (where I am often in the ditches picking up recyclables, including shopping bags!).
really works!
Went on a 6 day hiking trip to a pretty mosquito-y spot & I'd used this to treat all my clothes (two outfits) while none of my cohorts had treated their clothes. At certain points on the hike my friends' shirts were coated with mosquitoes and I had NONE on my shirt. Felt like very clear proof that it really works.
Cheap clothing treatment
I usually get eaten alive by mosquitos even with 100% deet. Treated my clothing, used 100% deet on exposed skin and dramatically reduced my bites. I did not like the application procedure and it's toxicity. Also, you can only treat about 1-2 sets of clothing completely. Overall, I would recommend this product.
Better than DEET!
Permethrins are safer than DEET. Read the EPA and NIH datasheets. With this product the contact with your skin is even less than DEET. DEET must be applied to the skin to be effective. The permethrins are applied to your clothes and stay there. It really does work for 3-6 weeks. Although I do feel sorry for the insects that are killed by the permethrin, I would prefer not to be a host to tick-borne Lyme disease.
Works as advertised
Solid product. I followed the directions and sprayed all my clothes before my trip. Had zero issue with insects despite hiking in Arkansas in the spring. Didn't even have to use bug spray. Will use again.
Seems to work OK so far
Semi-durable mosquito and tick repellent? What's not to like? I've been in some very buggy places and the mosquitoes inevitably want to land and bite the places where it's hard to swat. When you treat your clothing before going on a trip you eliminate that moment when you realize that you're in a super buggy area and you have to stop and put on repellent. You only have to do exposed skin, like face, back of the neck, hands. There's no issue with finding out that they can bite through that one layer you thought would stop them. The manufacturer says it's good for six washings or six weeks, but I perspire super heavily and I think that it doesn't last that long the way things have gone for me. Having met people with long-term Lyme disease I really like that it is good for ticks. I haven't challenged it in any insanely buggy areas, but have been on trips where others were swatting a lot and I wasn't.
