The Silva® Polaris® Base Plate compass is an instrument for the advanced orienteer as well as novices to map-and-compass work.
- Clear base plate with inch, millimeter and 1:24,000 scales, makes it easy to read a map, set bearings, and plan a trip
- Features 2° graduation lines with large numerals at every 20° for easy reading of bearings
- Red and black orientation lines facilitate establishing your position on, or setting your course from, a map; scales help determine distances
- Large sighting arrow helps you set your course across the land; large bezel and ergonomic design make it easy to hold and use
- Fixed declination scale accomodates quick adjustments of map bearings to field headings
- Base plate lanyard hole lets you keep the compass handy around your neck (lanyard not included)
- Friction-free sapphire bearing allows the tungsten steel needle to swing freely; permanently clear fluid keeps it steady
- Instructions explain how to find yourself on a map given known landmarks and how to set a bearing across the land using a map

Save your money - for 99.9999% of all situations in which you will use a compass (and yes, please take a compass with you when you go out into the wild, even on a well-marked trail), this is all you will ever need.
You can spend more $ and get something fancier and/or with more do-dads - some of which are even occasionally useful but not strictly necessary, like a sighting mirror. But for what you really need a compass to be - simple, rugged, reliable and accurate - this is it.

The Polaris model has been around for eons. I recently found a vintage Polaris in original box and instructions at an estate sale and it must be from the late 60's or early 70's. put the vintage model up agaist the new model and both are reading the same bearings. Just shows the quality that goes into these compasses. I thought for sure the liquid in the vintage model would be gone or discolored. It was in perfect shape. It is a basic model that will get you from point A to point B if you take time to understand how to use them properly.

Nice feel, good resolution, and inexpensive, but poorly built. I have had it for about two years and it has been treated kindly. However, it now has a bubble in it with a diameter of about 0.4 inches. The compass is still accurate, but the bubble is annoying.
