Durable and Awesome
I've had one of these for about 10 years now and just purchased a second. I used my original one for backpacking. Very durable, lightweight, easily packable, high capacity (for desert), and versatile. Now I'm a mom and need more water to pack the family up for an outing. I tried a number of hard plastic 5 gallon containers, because I needed more volume. However, they always leaked and took up a large space in my small car. Now I use 2 of these Droms and it works great. Easy to pack, very durable (kids!), very versatile (especially with the shower attachment). You should get this... you won't be disappointed.
I Love My Water Pig
I have carried this fat little water pig from the floor of the Owens valley up over Forgotten Pass into the Inyo Mountains during the dry 90 degree heat of July. Surrounded by split red rocks and dry streambeds there's nothing as satisfying as patting the old water pig and knowing that you have fresh clean water at your fingertips. I have used this bladder for several years in the Sierra and around Ventana as well. Sometimes I carry it in empty and then fill-up at a lake or stream. It shows no sign of fouling or falling apart. The water always tastes great. It never leaks. The weight is in the water, not the container(s). I did buy the spigot and it should be standard issue. All in all you get what you pay for and more here. I love this pig. But be careful, there's something addictive about patting the pig.
Wildland Firefighter must!
As a Hotshot (type of wildland firefighter) Myself and others on the crew sometimes go through a gallon or so of water a day and the dromedary allows you to fill up in the morning and not worry about running out (at least with the 10 liter bag) This bag is extremely tough but the only downfall is it only comes with one type of drinking hose which is not as reliable as the bag itself...at least on the front lines of a wildland fire. I sure for every day camping/backpacking though it would be great.
Very Big Bladder.
I was initially hesitant to get a bladder this large due to the risk of storing two or more days worth of water in a single bladder. I was also concerned that it would be impossible to balance my pack with two and a half gallons sloshing around inside. The first concern was greatly alleviated by the ruggedness of this bladder. I even read a review of this badder on another site where a guy claimed to have driven over it with his car without it rupturing. It is highly resistant to abrasions and sharp rocks are likely no match for the Cordura but to be safe I think I would prefer to take two or three of the four liter bladders if I were going solo into cactus country. As for packing this large bladder, I found that the webbing straps on the perimeter did an excellent job of compressing the bladder and keeping it stable regardless of how much water was left inside. On a side note, I've even used this bladder as a pillow on warmer nights. To MSR: I wish the webbing strap had some form of locking clip since knots can be hard to untie if you have been using the strap to support the 23 pound weight of a full bladder. The black caps are also hard to locate in the dark. My suggestion would be to tether the caps or make them white or red to make them more visible in the dark. And finally, a handle needs to be incorporated into the webbing strap on the largest bladder since it is much to narrow to be comfortable supporting the weight of 10 liters of water.
Like it, but a few frustrating quirks.
We bought this for our fall Boundary Waters trip as I was sick of using my dad's farm store cube shaped water bladders. Initial impressions were its pretty cool and seems very durable. It never leaked on us, but being in the Boundary Waters, we never transported it full of water. It was filled at camp using a Katadyn gravity filter which is where I found the first issue.... Neither of the caps have a tether that keeps them with the bag when you unscrew them. I had to make sure I found a place in camp to put it where I wouldn't lose it. Another issue I have is that the strings along the outside just aren't quite functional enough for hanging, etc. I'm going to try and fashion something with a carabineer for our next trip. I bought this knowing it would work great with my MSR MiniWorks, just wish it played a little nicer with my Katadyn gravity filter. Overall, I recommend this for backpacking, not so much for base camping.
does the job well
After making repeated trips from the water source to our campsite, I wanted a dromedary bag that would attach securely to my MSR waterworks filter and held enough water for meals, cleaning and drinking at the campsite. This fits the bill perfectly. I hang a sling from a branch and caribiner it to the cord thet runs through the cover. The cord bunches up a bit, but it works great (I added the spigot cap to make the on/off) work easier.
Works great but doesnt fit ...
It works great. I bought the optional spout which works great. My only problem is that my Katadyn pump attachment doesnt fit into the bag. Its sooo close, but the opening on the MSR bag is just a touch too small. I end up pumping into my water bottle then pouring into the MSR bag.
Leaked during an overnight trip
I used the product for a week a Burning Man and then took it for an overnighter in Yosemite, with the hose attachment. During day 2 in YNP, I noticed dampness on the clothes under the bladder and on the bladder textile material itself. I suspect it was coming from the cap or hose attachment, but it is difficult to be totally sure. I didn't see any pinhole leaks when I squeezed the bladder. Anyways, it doesn't really matter for my purposes. If it had been leaking on down instead of fleece, it would have been a potentially serious issue. Because my pack is old and does not have a dedicated bladder pouch, I typically lay the bladder in last, with the cap facing down and hose angled towards my shoulder, then strap the pack's top pocket down on top of the whole setup. It shouldn't have stressed the MSR design. I'll be exchanging it ASAP. Not sure if I'll retry MSR in hopes I got a faulty one or try a new brand. If I exchange and the new one performs better, I'll edit this review or something.
The Good and The Bad
I backpack the Ventana Wilderness of the Big Sur, CA are frequently and am tough on my equipment, so I am always looking for light weight, durable gear to accompany me on my journeys. This 10L Dromedary bag from MSR is just that. There are a few drawbacks though: Good: Light, versatile, adjustable, VERY tough. Bad: The hydration adapter that is available is a bad design for use as a bladder in a sleeve inside a pack. The problem is that the elbow that screws onto the standard cap of the bladder sticks out a good ways. Thus, when you shove this down into a hydration sleeve in a pack and pack it up tight, you have to be really careful how you pack in order to avoid damaging that elbow pressing out into the pack. It's also easy to bend the hose over at the elbow with gear packed tight against it thereby restricting flow, a very frustrating thing when you've spent several minutes packing up and are setting off on a long hike. Long story short: This is a great bladder with lots of options for attaching to a pack or compressing the bladder with the straps that run the perimeter of the bladder. However, MSR needs to develop a cap specifically made for hydration hose attachment that is more low profile and that protects the hose attachment at the bladder.
avoid iodine
I used Iodine in it and the water came out clear. The plastic that I could see was no longer clear. Other than that it was a great product and would recommend it to anyone who wants to carry 2.5 gallons of water or someone who would use it for large groups.
