Comments about Petzl Ascension Ascender:
This device works great on the bottom 20' of rope - if you know how to use it. For those of you looking at buying a pair, I just spent a week on big walls in Yosemite with nForce and Ascenders. Ascenders are my choice and here's why...
Fewer moving parts. Petzl has a simple thumb-operated release that you can pull straight back to loosen on the rope - and therefore slide up the rope on the first 20' without having to pull the rope through from below. You have to pull the lever down and back to release it from the rope. They also can be replaced on a rope when passing gear when cleaning traversing aid routes a lot easier than nForces because of the design and simplicity.
The nForces work almost as well, and certainly may grip the rope with more force (although I have never had a petzl ascender slip on a dry rope) but they are much harder to place/replace on the rope when passing gear, release pressure on the start of a pitch, etc. There is enough stuff to worry about up there besides all the extra movement and slop of your ascender.

Comments about Petzl Ascension Ascender:
this product is in my opinion the best ascender you can buy, i use one of these on my chest harness and one for my hand to get me out of some difficult caves, the carabiner hole is a little too small which is my only complaint, also tying a gear bag to the bottom of your rope allows you to ascend the first 20 feet without having to manually pull the rope through the ascender.

Comments about Petzl Ascension Ascender:
The Petzl ascenders work fine, as long as there is at least 20 feet of rope below you. Before that point, there is not enough force holding the rope down, so you have to manually pull the bottom of the rope down.
