Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

I have had this stove for over a year now and used several canisters of fuel without a single issue. The stove has lit the first time every time and performed amazingly well. I have used this stove anywhere from 4,000' to 10,500' without any problems. The only complaint I have is my dualist pot is a little unstable on the stove, but if its on flat level ground, it's really not an issue.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

This stove is awesome I just recently bought it and love it. When I got home I tried boiling water witha full canister of Isopro it boiled water in a matter of seconeds. I tested it several more times at home before I took it into the field. I put some water on to boil and turned around the water was already about to boil and I could not turn it off fast enough water boiled over put out the stove I dried it of and it worked fine. I went on a four day trip to use it for the first time in the woods I worked fine. The only complaint is that you cannot control the temperature very well. Overall this is an awesome stove.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

I was leaning towards getting a jet boil based upon reviews I read. At the REI store the associate swore by the pocketrocket since I was planning on mostly backpack camping this summer. I'm glad I listened to his advice. It's super light, powerful, and made of better quality materials than a lot of other stoves. Less than half the price too.

I love this stove! It does everything they say it does. Light weight, compact, and powerful. It fits into my cooking pot with fuel, and two bowls. Now thats compact! I have used this on many backpacking trips over the years and I dont think I'll have the need to replace it for many more years.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

Love the pocket rocket... you can't beat the size or the weight and it is worth the money. I had this side by side with a coleman stove and there is no comparison... I don't need to take the coleman stove any more (even though it has been extremely reliable).

The only desire I had was for it to boil water a little quicker... but I am not sure I gave it a fair test. The water was extremely cold starting out and the wind was blowing quite a bit (a cold wind). However, it still functioned extremely well.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

I just used this for the first time this last weekend on a 3 day backpacking trip and found it to be absolutely perfect for a backpacker looking for light weight gear.

It is very easy to work with and managed to boil water for coffee and meals quite quickly. I also found it to be frugal on the fuel; I had half a 8oz canister left after cooking for 2 people over 3 days.

Another big plus is the hard plastic carrying case it comes with. A very nice touch when you tend to just jam things in our pack in the morning.

What can I say besides this little stove rocks. I'm not keen on disposable canisters but you can recycle them it's just a pain. The stove lights quick, fits in my nForm Backpacker with no problem. Flame is easy to control and there is no soot at all.

Over all this is one of the best stoves that I have ever used for the money!

Get one, but learn how to recycle the canisters.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

One of my favorite pieces of gear. I was torn between the pocket rocket and the snow peak lite max stove. What sold me on the msr was the plastic case it comes in. I was afraid i would crush the snow peak in my pack. The weights aren't much different and after using the msr I was a believer. Fast boiling, great temperature control and, contrary to other people who have reviewed this stove, I haven't had any problems with stability.

Great lightweight backpacking stove.

this thing had a campbells chicken and sausage gumbo soup at a full boil in no time on a recent hiking trip. i had boy scouts drooling when i whipped this thing out vs. their soggy ham and cheeses... definitely a great product. i've had it for more than a year and it has never let me down. just make sure that the fuel is warm or it wont really work all that great. other than that, this thing is amazing.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

With a windscreen made of heavy duty tinfoil and a 1 ounce anti gravity gear pot cozy - the Pocket Rocket ended up being a terrific choice for 4-1/2 months of backpacking on the PCT. The 2-quart pot was a bit wobbly on the top, but never tipped. There are postal regulations (Publication 52) that allow the fuel cannister to be mailed (ground only and only within the 48 states) so we had replacement fuel mailed ahead of us as we hiked. A downside is that some of the fuel left in the container was always left behind since we weren't going to carry 2-cannisters. If we weren't cooking for two we probably would have used an alcohol stove - but they didn't bring 2-quarts of water to a boil before running out of alcohol. This was great for a long distance hike. I looked at a MSR Reactor but the 20.2 ounce weight without the fuel was too great a difference to the approx 5 ounce weight of the Pocket Rocket, foil and cozy.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

I know lots of people with this stove and no one has ever had any problems. It is very compact and light. I just use it to boil water for freeze dry meals, soup, coco, and oatmeal.

If you do a lot of cooking with big pots or pans I would look for something else, but if you are a backpacker this is it. Also it uses the most common fuel cartridges.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

This is a great little stove. Packs up so small you won't even notice it. When coupled with the small fuel canisters you can really get the job done light!! Only downfall is it does concentrate the heat in the center and will burn things quickly if not attended. Perfect for boiling water but have also cooked bacon and steaks with some watchfulness. So light though it makes up for it. My friend has the snow peak compact stove and every time he lights his up before me and I am always boiling water and eating before him. This stove performs.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

This is my first stove. I took it on an overnight trip to the islands and found it to be very acceptable. I wanted something relatively inexpensive, light, dependable; basically something that would be hard to mess up. You screw the stove right onto one of their fuel canisters, twist the doo-dad and light it. I didn't think to use a windscreen, which would have really sped things up. Overall I would recommend it for basic use for people who want something easy to maintain that is extremely compact.

Its pretty simple. This thing is light, easy to use, and powerful. I have a buddy that loves to cook and this stove's temp control gives him what he wants, so we eat great at the end of the day.

My only nag is that the thin pot supports could easily bend, though this hasn't happened. I would also like better wind sheltering, as this thing's boil times and efficiency can take a big hit if there is a decent wind.

As with any product there are plusses and minusses. the problems with the pocket rocket are easily dealt with. I use a modified lab beaker screen (bend up the corners) to keep pots and pans from sliding off of the three wings. I also use a piece of heavy duty tinfoil wrapped around the burner and pot that decreases heating time, saves fuel, adds stability, and increases wind resistance. I do extensive 4 season ultralight backpacking and this is the only pressurized cannister stove that I can reccomend. I just wish that the cannisters were refillable.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

I used my Pocket Rocket for a 4 day backpacking trip across Arkansas. It was great, we had cold and very windy weather (24F to 50). Even in the strong winds and chilly temps, I never had any problems lighting the stove or keeping a flame. The boil time was a bit slower in the extreme winds on top of the mountains, but it was still great! It is a bit unstable, but anything that size with the minimalist factor is going to be a bit unstable. Overall, I love my stove and would definitely recommend it to anyone!

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

The pocket rocket is an excellent all around stove, perfect for the adventurer. The stove is light and compact, and the only problems that I can find with mine is that it is unstable on uneven ground, and the propane fuel doesnt last as long in cold conditions. (Mine still worked fine in 10 degree weather, but I was dismayed by how quickly it ate through the fuel). For its price, this is the best stove on the market, and I would highly recomend it.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

This is a great all around stove. It boils water very fast, (usually arount 2.5-3 minutes) and also has a nice simmer even in the wind. I starts easy except in the cold. A quick fix to this problem is to put it in your sleeping bag with you at night and then it starts no problem. It is compact and comes in a plastic protective case. The downfalls are that on rocky terrain its hard to find a somewhat level spot to set it. Otherwise it's a great stove, and truly sounds like a rocket.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

Walked into REI looking to buy the ETAPower stove, but after some talking to an expert, he suggested this one for me. This Pocket Rocket is powerful and lightweight, but you really have to be careful when cooking on it. The first time I used it, I was cooking some rice and my pot fell right off. Nothing has fallen off since, but there have been a few close calls. It does boil quick, easy to control the flame, very good with fuel and it's small, but I still can't get over the issue of constantly worrying that my food and/or water may hit the dirt at the worst possible time. Also, what's the deal with all the manuals included with this stove?

I've used this tiny stove to heat water around the world. It's compact, light and cools quickly. I used it in military service for years where the joy of a hot cup in the morning made it well worth the little extra weight. I have not found a screw on canister that didn't work. I'm currently using a 70% butane/30% propane mix for high altitude use (15-16,000 feet) and it works fine. I'm still playing around with canister insulating options due to the temps at those altitudes but the stove/fuel keep making hot water so it's a combination that's working. While the canisters aren't cheap, white gas is about $15/gallon in Ecuador so they are a good alternative to my WhisperLite Int'l. Of course you need to shield this little guy from the wind and make sure the canister is firmly placed but if you want a light international stove for heating water, this stove is nearly perfect. Finally, combine it with the GSI Dualist cookset (inside which the Pocket Rocket and a fuel canister fit nicely) and you've got a fantastic system.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

This replaced a Whisperlite stove, and while we miss using a refillable liquid fuel bottle, this Pocket Rocket is still far superior because it REALLY SIMMERS - the first stove we've had that truly simmers. No more crunchy rice and beans! It's also incredibly compact (fuel and stove pack inside the cookpot), QUIET (we can carry on a conversation while cooking), and the canister base makes it stable. The only downside - using canisters seems inflexible and wasteful, and they are difficult to recycle in my area.
A great value overall.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

For the size and price you can't get a better stove! It's super light, cooks food fast, and there's no fuss or mess to clean up. Also the fuel canisters are cheap, readily available and recyclable.

The only con is that you do need a stable place to use this stove and anything over an 8" pan isn't recommended.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

I hike quite a bit in the Adirondacks, doing kayaking or hiking the Great Range, which often requires a few overnight stays. So space and weight were big factors in choosing my stove, as well as efficiency in heating liquids. So I bought this for its' size and weight. I've used the whisperlite before and loved 99% of it. The part I didn't like about the whisperlite was that it only had two settings (boil and BOIL). This model has great temperature control and can be beneficial for making foods that require simmering in their preparations, like rice.
When I was done with my first canister of fuel, I was told, a bit too late, that the fuel canister cannot be re-filled. It's not a big deal since each canister is about $5.00, but to me, it's kind of a pain to have to buy it every time I run out, rather than simply filling a whisperlite canister with fuel of my choosing.
But that is honestly my ONLY complaint and this product has worked BEAUTIFULLY and delivers great temperature control and when paired with the MSR stowaway pot (you can put a 227g fuel canister and the pocket rocket in it for wasy travel)the space saving capabilities truly allows you to bring other important gear along with you! I highly recommend this product!

I got this stove on sale [$] It is light and small, stingy with the fuel, and will boil 1.5L of water in 5 minutes no problem. I can't imagine anything easier to use - screw it to the fuel cannister, light, boil liquid. It isn't good for simmering or complex cooking. It seems to be specifically designed to be a minimalist backpacking stove - i.e. boiling liquid in your pot. It can be used to make smores in a pinch :)I use a Montbell Titanium 1.8L pot with this stove. It is a wide pot, so you have to be careful to use it on flat, stable ground or it will tip over.[...]

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

What a great stove! I live next to the Sangre de Cristo range in Colorado, and take regular back country trips. Up until two years ago my stove of choice was the MSR Whisperlite. That has changed. The size of this stove alone is a dream come true for the ultralight backpacker. The stove itself takes up almost no room, and weighs next to nothing. Set up and light time is twice as fast as my Whisperlite stove. And the stove takes no time at all to boil water, which saves fuel. I will admit that cooking over the stove has always been secondary to grill grates and a fire pit, which allows me to limit my fuel weight. That is exactly what makes this stove so great.

Stability and temperature control seem to be the only complaints about this stove. I must say, that no matter which stove you choose, finding a stable platform for the stove must be your first priority. That being said, I will admit that my whisperlite seems to be a bit more stable. As far as temperature control is concerned, the stove concentrates the flame on the center of the pot or pan. Because of this, the stove requires that you constantly watch and stir you food to keep it from burning, even at low temps. Windy conditions also seems to be a problem since you are not able to use a windshield on the stove. (A drawback to using any stove with the same style of fuel canister.) In my opinion, this only requires that you find a more sheltered campsite, or sit upwind from the stove to act as a windshield yourself. Also a great time to utilize the vestibule on your tent.

Overall, if weight and size are your main concern, I would highly recommend this stove. If you don't mind carrying a little extra weight, and spending a little more time setting up your stove, I believe the Whisperlite Internationale should be the only other stove you consider.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

Bought this for backpacking but its great if you just want to heat up water for a hot drink anytime.

Very compact and lightweight, gives off plenty of heat and boils water very fast. Gas lasts longer than expected. Never had a stability issue.

As with all stoves using this fuel type, its not great when the temperature drops and must be sheltered from the wind, that said as its so light its my stove of choice for short spring / fall backpacking trips. Its not easy to lower the heat to just simmer, but it excels at boiling water.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

I like some comfort and convenience but have been trying to shave ounces from my pack. Not only did this save approximately 12 ounces from my whisperlite stove but I found that found that by using low flame settings I only used 3 ounces of fuel for 4 days of heating water for breakfast and dinner (approximately 7 cups each day)on a solo trip. This compares with approximately 8-9 ounces of white gas when using my whisperlite. I'm assuming that the difference is the fuel used to prime the Whisperlite and the residual burn after turning the stove off, as well as the heat that escapes up the sides of the small pot I use on solo trips. The pocket rocket is easy to set up and light and is stable enough with small pots, and the though the flame adjustment range is very narrow, the flame can be easily adjusted to any height desired. One of the better purchases I've made for my solo trips.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

We used this pocket rocket for 2 meals on an overnight trip. Each meal was perfect because it heated the water pretty fast. I wish we had bought 2 though to be able to heat both of our meals at the same time. It is great because it is so small but you have to make sure the arms are open or it will tip over, and it gets hot! BUT it cools off very quickly too.

Works really well for most camping conditions. The freezing point of the fuel is about 30 degrees so be sure to have a full canister if you expect weather in that range so that it has enough pressure to burn. Took this out on the Appalachian Trail for several days. Had the pocket rocket and the titan pot. Both are small and really best suited for boiling water. Packs down smaller than a jet boil and the titan holds just under 3 cups of water. The boil time is guessed at about 4 minutes, I did not time it. Though the fuel is stored in the titan, if not completely dried out, it will have a rust ring from the fuel.
Worked very well!!

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

I found this stove a good choice for basic camping. I recently used it on an overnight trip and found it easy to set up, easy to light, and had decent results. It is incredibly compact and inexpensive. I also went with MSR because they seemed to be an established brand with a broad range of products. I would have liked more wind protection. The stove screws directly onto a compatible fuel canister, and you pretty much just have to turn it on and light it. I used a small pot for boiling water. I have a feeling a large pot may not balance well due to the compact size.

I am an avid adventurer, and never leave home without this stove. It lights on the fly, packs down smaller than my silverwear, and boils water quickly! Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

This Stove is very good. I always research products ALOT before I buy them, and still sometimes im dissapointed, But not with this stove. It is truly a great stove.
Very easy to setup, use, maintain. boils water VERY fast. and is also very lightweight.
It isnt too stable but so far I have had no problems with that, and in reality, its not too hard to stick a few rocks around the base to keep it from tipping.
Of course it dosnt perform too well in cold temperatures. If it starts to get colder, I suggest you get it going and do all the boiling you need to asap, the more you turn it on and off, the more likely it will freeze up.
with that said, I have used it in below freezing conditions, I just dont recommend it, get a wisperlight for that.

conclusion: great lightweight stove that packs a punch, if you are carefull you dont need to worry about tipping, never had it happen to me.

ps: i have heard people say they didnt like the flimsy stands that fold out. I have not had problems with flimsyness either, maybe i dont try hard enough. but I have cooked larger sized aluminum pots with it. either way, use common knowledge, this stove is really only meant for use with other ultralight (titanium, aluminum) pots.

This stove packs a serious punch for its size. It can boil a pot of water quickly and is easy to use for any cooking. I really love the compactness of it. My only problems are that it is only as stable as the fuel can it sits on, and also said fuel can is not recyclable to my knowledge. Also, although I haven't tried it, I've heard because of the pressurized fuel, it doesn't work at low temperatures. Otherwise totally awesome!!

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

while this is the only stove i've ever owned - and thus nothing else to compare it to - it is by far the favorite piece of all my camping gear. i have owned the pocket rocket for several years, and have never had a single problem. it lights right up every time and boils fast. plus it's so tiny and compact, it really does fit anywhere. i love dork-ing out and showing folks how it folds up into its tiny plastic carrying box.

my only real issue is that with a full pot of water, it's not that stable. the span of the tri-prong pot support is not that wide (4 1/2 inches?), and even though they are "grooved" to be a little grabby, you definitely have to be on solid ground or you may spill your soup.

another issue is with the canisters - but this is not specific to this particular stove, just canister models in general. they are not refillable and you never know when they are going to run out, so i end up bringing an extra canister or two to make sure i don't run out. however, the pocket rocket seems to be extremely efficient, because i can use the canisters for probably a dozen meals (i swear i've used the same canister on at least five 2-3 day trips)

i keep thinking i am going to buy a second stove, a larger, more stable one for car camping, but why? this guy has never let me down.

I have used it under heavy rain and performed incredible (covered by the pot, of course). In summary, it's small, light, easy to use, so go buy it.

Good 2nd stove for a group trek, or for two on a short trip. All cannister stoves are ecologically flawed in that as far as I know, no manuafacturer's cannister is recyclable or reusable. None are good for snow camping or altitude. Three leg trivet must be level or pot can tip. Packs small, adjusts fuel flow well, but needs a wind screen, so improvise one or buy one like the MSR of thick foldable aluminum.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

This stove does what it's supposed to: upon applying a light, it'll fire up and boil some water, which is all I really use it for on the trail.

Unfortunately, it requires a canister, and I find canisters to be exceptionally annoying. You never know how much you have left in one, so you must chance it, carry a spare, or buy a new one each time. Plus, the little canisters don't provide a ton of stability.

But, those are criticisms of the genre of stove, not of this particular stove, and I've had absolutely no problems with this stove.

While I do enjoy comfort I don't like paying for it with extra weight. This stove is extremly light and compact. You can stick it in your cargo pocket if you need to. It doesn't boil water as quickly as some stoves but it does the job just fine. If you like it light and fast this is the stove for you. For only [$]it is the best stove for the money.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

Took this little sucker on some AT section hiking recently. My partner had a larger stove. The Pocket Rocket lit easier, maintained better balance, and cooked quicker than the larger counterpart. The flame was more even and consistent. My friend is looking to replace his stove with a Pocket Rocket before we head out this Spring.

A pretty good little stove they've managed to make here. It's lighter than a fart and fits almost anywhere. My only complaint is that its unstable with a full pot on it. It boils faster than you can say "boil" 183 times and goes right into simmer mode in no time at all. Overall a very good stove me thinks!

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

I've been using the Pocket Rocket for some time now an I have to say that it's done the trick for me. It's perfect for my ultralight backpacking style, and is a great stove with few sacrifices to boot.

As has been mentioned, it is very susceptible to wind gusts, however a simple lightweight windscreen has solved that problem for me. Also, the pot supports are not the strongest, but I am usually cooking with a Heineken 24 oz. can-pot, so they're just fine in my case!

What really kills you on weight is the fuel, and having no way to gauge how much fuel is left in each canister requires the addition of a couple more to every trip. Clocking in at about 12 oz apiece, the canisters really do add up, but it's much more efficient than carrying an alcohol stove in my opinion, so I don't mind.

All in all, another great stove from MSR. I'll be using this in the future again and again.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

This product is extremely lightweight and is an excellent buy. The stove is efficient and boils two cups of water in about 2:15.

The one drawback is that this stove is not wind resistant at all. You must have some kind of windblock or this stove will not preform at its best.

I reccomend the MSR Windpro stove.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

The stove is light and well made, especially for the price. Very simple construction, easy to operate, and hard to kill. Like most catridge stoves it's a bit troublesome in the cold, but for warmer weather it's great. Does not work well in any kind of wind. The stove will not extinguish, but you'll wait twice the amount of time for a boil. The pot supports are a bit flimsy. You'll eventually bend one, but you can just bend it right back. One notable problem is it's height. The rocket is tall, so the stove and pot arrangement tends to be especially top heavy compared with other similar stoves. It's a great stove for the price, but for a little more money you can find something much better.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

Got one to replace my Wisper light for 3 season use. Worked OK, but has some issues...

Pot supports are flimsy. Hinge seems OK, but struts are so thin that pots sway and twist when sturring Lipton noodles & rice dishes. Happens too much even with the MSR 1.5 litre pot, and much more with the 2 litre pot.

Replace pocket rocket with Snowpeak Gigapower. Pot no longer sways or twists. Gigapower is also less tippy on uneven ground.

Gigapower flame pattern also created less of a hot spot and was easier to cook Lipton Fettacine Alredo without sticking. (2-3" circle had sticking problem with pocket rocket and MSR teflon coated aluminum pot.)

Gigapower was also a lot better in a light to medium wind - but both needed a wind break of some sort for medium to heavy wind.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

The Pocket Rocket works great for ultralight backpackers who do not want to futz with alcohol stove. It burns hot and fast and is best for boiling water.

The heat is controlled well and the stove simmers well, but the heat spot is small. Also, one-third of the burner can go out in a small wind if you do not use some sort of wind screen.

The canisters are also bulky and it can be hard to gauge how much fuel is left in them. If I needed to carry more than two canisters, another stove would be in order. The bulk and empty weight of the canisters is too much to carry in that situation. If you could re-supply, that critique goes out the window.

Nevertheless, I will continue to use the PocketRocket when I will carry no more than two canisters at a time. It is small, compact, lighweight and user-friendly. It is not finicky like white-gas stoves can be.

This tiny titan requires an isobutane/propane canister. On our first trip with it, one 8-ounce canister with this stove boiled water for 2 people for supper and breakfast on a 3 night backpacking trip. Burn time is variable, so meal plans must be flexible, but it's a good lightweight system. My husband and I generally prefer the whisperlite (him) or the dragonfly (me) with a refillable fuel bottle.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

While this stove is super light and compact for backpacking, I find that its a bit too unstable unless you plan on tending to it all the time. When i use it, i tend to have to hold my pots and pans with the handle over the stove all the time as they all tend just to "balance" on the points of the stove rather than lay flush on it. The stove offers alot of heat when used but doesnt offer much wind protection. Overall this is a good stove only under optimal conditions (no wind, steady surface).

I do most of my backpacking in non-winter conditions (though lots of spring/fall shoulder seasons), and it has never failed to give me what I need - boiling water on demand. As long as potential buyers are familiar with the limitations of all canister stoves and ready to deal with them (e.g., susceptibility to cold conditions & wind), this one won't disappoint you.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

I'm not sure stoves can get much smaller than this. Solidly built, stable with the right fuel canister underneath. The included plastic container is great for backpackers, with minimal space usage and confidence you won't break it. I've heard the fuel can be hard to find in some of the more remote areas so make sure you stock up before you head out. There isn't a windscreen, nor can there be, so occasionally you'll have to rig up something or find a sheltered spot to cook comfortably.

Great stove with quick heat time and super light. Also packs very small, with exception of fuel canisters. Best if using with a large homemade screen.

I love it cause it takes up no room in my pack, and it's easy to get going. I have gotten my water boiling faster than my compatriots with Whisperlites since I got my stove going immediately, and they had to prime their's etc. The only complaint I have is that it's very unstable if you're cooking on soft ground. I haven't spilled my water yet, but I feel like it's only a matter of time. I've now learned that it's good to set up the stove on a larger flat object such as a pot cover.

ive used a whisperlite for 10 years now, but finally wanted to shave a little weight from my pack and stop pumping up a fuel bottle. so far, the pocket rocket has been a solid substitute. its incredibly light, setup takes seconds, and lighting it takes even less time.

the temperature control on the stove isnt that great, so if you are into simmering your meals, this may not be the stove for you. plus it would have been nice to have some sort of windscreen included, but this is a minor point...coming up with your own isnt too tough.

if weight and ease of use are your primary concerns, this is the stove for you, but if you are looking to bake muffins in the morning, you may want to look at something else.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

Other users have commented on the lack of stability, which is somewhat true but seems to me to be inevitable when you have a stove that attaches directly to the top of the fuel canister. However, this feature is part of what makes it small and light. So, you can't have it all.

I've used the stove about 5 or 6 times so far in conditions varying from 1000 feet elevation at 70 degrees to about 35-40 degrees at 6000 feet. In the high elevation, cooler conditions you either have to have a full canister or you must help the poor fuel out and keep it warm. What I did was to bring the almost-empty canister inside the sleeping bag to get it nice and warm before using it. Before I did this, it had frost on it from being outside the tent! This took the fuel from being useless to making my morning coffee (2 cups of water boiled).

I have owned and used an MSR Pocket Rocket stove for three years now and have never been disappointed. The stove never needs cleaning, is super simple to use, and provides some amazing heating power for its size. I have taken this stove on day hikes, long weekends, and 2 week excursions. MSR has done an excellent job fashioning a simple and lightweight, yet powerful stove and the fuel canisters fit perfectly into a large selection of cooksets for storage.

Special Note: MSR fuel canisters are very available across the U.S., but you can not bring them on airplanes and the availability in Europe and Asia was markedly less. If you plan on going international you may want to check out the MSR Whisperlite International.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

This is a fantastic stove. It is the lightest that MSR makes and is so easy and practical to use. I dont like how big the sack is for my other stoves but this one packs into a very small case. It fits into anything for packing. It dosnt heat as fast as other stoves but takes less fuel. It is the best around.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

For the compact size and weight, this is a great backpacking and hiking stove. You can easily fit the stove into your cook gear and the fuel is small as well. The flame is easily adjustable and can boil water fast. A screen may be needed and auminum foil works OK for that. In my opinion, the stove is great for heating water used for freeze dried meals, hot drinks, etc. It really was not meant for heating multi person meals using frying pans. One and two preson meals work fine.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

Great stove. I have used this stove when bicycle touring where its light weight really is a factor in its favor. It boils water fast (although if it is at all windy the time to boil will increase). A very good companion to the Titan Kettle. The downside to this stove is that it is not good for cooking (only boiling) as its heat is very concentrated and will burn your bacon.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

Great stove, lights very easily and has a strong output, and stable as long as you set it down level. I HATE throwing away all those metal canisters when they're empty; really an environmental nightmare, as are Coleman 16 oz propane canisters. Make a way to recycle them or refill them; I am not using this stove anymore because of the waste.
Incredibly convenient however, sets up in seconds, and lights immediately. Propane-butane blend canister fuel is not as easy to find as some other fuel types.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

Been camping with this stove for a few trips now and love the ease and size. Sitting the canister on a rock or dirt, it can take a little time to find a stable point but once settled we haven't had any problems. Some type of windscreen would be nice but we've been able to rig something in the field to minimize heat loss. It also cools down quickly for repacking. Overall a great stove that will hopefully last a long time. Haven't used it in very cold temps though.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

This stove is great. I bought an Optimus MultiFuel several years ago and love it. It will burn anything from white gas to ox urine, is sturdy, and stable. However, when I started shaving the ounces I looked to a stove that I bought my best friend and his wife a little while back: the MSR Pocket Rocket. The Pocket Rocket is a LOT lighter than the Primus MF and gives up just a shade of stability. The stability is not much of an issue, especially when you consider how little it actually weighs: nothing (or almost nothing).

I have used it on several trips and love it. It is easy to light, it will simmer or really fire up, and is pretty easy on the fuel.

All in all, I would buy this stove unless there is a compelling reason for you to another. I would even recommend this to those people as a second stove since it's price is so low.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

I bought this for my trip along the narrows in zion. It is great because it is extrememly light weight and the canisters are not too bad either. I was able to fit the stove and the canisters [$] in with my pots. I felt that i was able to control the temp really easily and it was pretty easy to clean. It was really easy to light when there was not wind, but like all stoves, it is hard to light when it is really windy. Also, where we were camping, the only stable ground was the sand. After putting the stove on top of canister, and a pot of water on top of that, the stove was top heavy and easily knocked over. Even on a table, I felt that it got a little top heavy. We tried to cook pasta with white cream sauce, but the milk got burn to the bottom of a nonstick pot. We lowered the temp, but then the water didn't boil. It might be the pot, but I thought I was share the full experience with it. When boiling water, it was rapid!

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

This really is a great stove. I've used it many times and never had any issue with it lighting reliably and getting my water boiling.

The con is the stability. I've spilled a few pots of water due to the fact it can be a little wobbly - but that's the tradeoff for lightweight. A very flat surface definitely helps.

As another reviewer mentioned, a windscreen is helpful. Its typically not a great idea to use a windscreen that reflects heat back onto the canister, so be careful there. I simply cut about an 18" piece of tyvek to use as a windblocker that erects using twigs. Very light and packs down to nothing.

All in all, highly recommended.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

I love this little stove! It has replaced my whisperlite for three season use because it's tiny, incredibly user friendly, and works quickly. It is susceptible to the wind (bring a wind shield) and I've had issues with fuel freezing in Alpine conditions. It also takes much longer to boil anything when up high in adverse weather conditions. The biggest thing I don't like about this stove is that you can't tell exactly how much fuel is left in your canister, which lead us to run out on one trip. It also gets a bit unstable if you try to use a larger diameter pot on top, so definitely not for more than two people and best for solo cooking. The upshot is I don't use it for snow caving, but I use it for everything else.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

Incredibly light weight trailworthy stove. Lights instantly and very fast to boil. Very simple design; almost nothing could go wrong with it. Fuel efficient; a single medium sized canister (Primus, 230g) lasted me and my partner one week on the trail. I took this stove on the Appalachian Trail and the veteran through hiker's first reaction was to turn their noses up at it until they saw how quickly it lit and came to a boil - then they crowded around and wanted to try it themselves. Most sources aren't too clear on this, but it easily screws onto and works well with all the major manufacturer's canisters.

I have used this stove for several years and it continues to perform great in all conditions. Ihave used in on snow shoeing and cross country ski trips without any issues if you keep the fuel canister relatively warm. I normally prefer the pocket rocket to one of my white gas or multifuel stoves due it's simplicity and how quickly it is ready to cook with. A built in igniter would be nice but would also be something to break.

Comments about MSR MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove:

This stove is TINY!!! it weighs hardly anything and really does kick out the heat. It is unfortunate that it uses fuel canisters because you have to throw those away, but the compact nature of it makes it worth it. The fuel is also more expensive than white gas refills. It is a bit unstable, especially if you're using the small-sized fuel canister. Also very susceptible to wind. I would recommend bringing some kind of wind shield to put around the pot. Overall though, I love it.

Don't let it's cheap price fool you, this stove performs with the big boys. I've used the pocket rocket for 3 years now and I even bought it used off a friend who had used it a year or two. It boils water fast, is stable and uses little fuel. I've had 1 fuel canister last me 9 days in winter, boiling water for breakfast, dinner, and plenty of drinks. We even had a little boil-off competition and it somehow beat all stoves including the jetboil. I've used it in temps down to the teens and never had a problem.
