Rated 1 out of 5 by from a cold dud this is very unusual for REI to sell something that falls so short of expectations. be aware that the lighter does not come with fuel so you will have to purchase butane to fill it just to check to see if your lighter works. basically returning this since it has so little heat from the flame that i can hold my hand/fingers 2 inches above it without discomfort. no, i don't usually check a lighter by sticking my hand over the flame except in this case i wanted to verify that there was nothing even though the filaments were glowing red 'hot'. certainly not a lighter for an 'emergency'.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Okay Lighter First, this is NOT a survival tool! I bought this lighter on sale at REI because I thought for the price it was worth a try; this was a couple of months ago. I've had other "quality" (read: expensive) lighters as I don't like disposable anything. My other lighters with piezo starters worked okay for a year or two. This lighter seems to be comparable with the best of them which places it in the okay category. My biggest complaint is that one needs to be sure the flame is out before closing it; the flame remains for a very short time after releasing the valve. It doesn't appear to leak gas when closed so I'm guessing it's just residual gas in the ignition chamber. I don't use "cheap" gas so particulate or other contamination should not be an issue; this was a lesson learned the hard way. I really like the orange and the fact that it's big as I tend to misplace things. It also seems pretty sturdy but I'll wait and see. I also really like the fuel capacity as I'm not refilling it every week or so as with my other lighters. As to the lighter not coming filled with fuel, that's how non-disposable lighters generally come so I've not complaints on that end. I've given three stars only because I don't know how long it will last. If it lasts a year or two, I'd give it four stars. If it lasts longer, it would go up to four point five stars. Overall, if one needs a general purpose lighter, I'd recommend trying this one.
