Comments about Outdoor Products Nylon Tarp - 9.5' x 8' - 2012 Closeout:
I purchased this tarp initially to use as a lightweight cooking/camp shelter for our small scout troop on a backpacking trip. It is large enough to keep 6 or so people dry. It is lightweight enough to not regret taking it along if it doesn't rain.
The great thing is that it doubles as a lightweight sleeping shelter. It has 8 grommets, with waterproof coating. In an A-frame configuration, it is large enough to shelter 3 men and backpacks. I cut a 3 mm PMI utility cord (available at REI for $5/50 ft.) into 5 to 6 foot long sections and attached to the grommets to use as guy lines. The entire package, with the case, weighs in at 1 lb. 11.7 oz.
As a ground cover, I cut a 3 mil piece of plastic (obtained from a home improvement store) just smaller than the tarp (about 7 ft. X 9 ft.), and added a dozen aluminum stakes; that package weighs in at 1 lb. 5.5 oz.
So, for just over 3 lbs. (using trekking poles as the A-frame poles) and less than $50, 3 people can be sheltered pretty well from the elements. Obviously, there is no protection from bugs with this set-up; if necessary, mosquito netting could be added for a little more weight.
