by SoCal active galfromLove these shoes!I have recently increased my long trail runs from 10-15 to 20+ miles. My previous favorite trail shoe, Brooks puregrit, perfect for technical trail and obstacle course racing, were not giving the heel cushion I needed on longer runs, and about mile 16 I'd start to really feel my run on the bottoms of my feet, the heel in particular (maybe it's my running style). After signing up to run my first trail 50k, I realized I'd need a shoe with a little more something on the bottoms. I did some research on the La Sportiva after a friend, an ultra trail-runner, suggested these shoes to me. My feet are on the narrow-side, and his are too. This is only the second time I've ordered shoes without trying them on (the other time was when I ordered Tango shoes from Brazil), and they fit my feet perfectly! I could not ask for a better fit. With regard to sizing, as I did with the Tango shoes, I measured my feet and followed the standard directions for European sizing. While some reviewers stated these shoes run small, so order larger than normal, my observation is many popular American shoes run larger than true size (based on actually measuring the foot), so don't just order based on comparing size-to-size from one brand to another. These shoes arrived two and a half weeks before my 50k. I never felt a thing on my break-in run, and I successfully completed my race in sheer comfort. What else do I like about this shoe? Fits perfectly, light-weight, nimble sole (though not quite as agile as the Puregrit), minimal drop, lacing that stays in place (love the lace fabric; whatever it is, it def holds well). Although I have not worn them through water, I've run with my friend crossing streams, and they seem to shed water very quickly. I am not sure whether or not I'll wear these on my next obstacle-course race, as I prefer something with a tad bit less sole for scaling walls, climbing ropes, log-hopping, etc, but I now wear these for all my trail runs, short and long.

by Alison BfromGreat light weight trail shoesI love the new Helios. I generally have to avoid light weight running shoes due to my overpronation issues. However, La Sportiva made some nice additions in this shoe that gives extra support. I have found that I can wear these shoes for up to 22 miles so far. I have not pushed past that due to a history of knee problems, but I know that many people would be comfortable wearing these for an ultramarathon distance. The rock guard allows for comfortable running even on the rocky trails of East Coast trail running. The toe box is wide enough to fit my bunion, yet the heel stays cinched tight. The 4 mm drop leads to less ankle turning and a better ground "feel." I highly recommend this shoe for anyone who is looking for a more minimalist shoe but has a history of injuries.
