Comments about Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra CS WP Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:
I've only had these for a couple of months and have worn them on a weekend backpaking trip in the Texas Hill Country and some day hikes but the initial performance has been great. I was looking for an in between shoe for these types of activities and I have always had fit problems. I am 6'5" with size 14, flat, narrow feet and comfortable shoes can be a challenge. These fit the bill so far. Very comfortable to the point that at the end of the day I'm not rushing to get them off. I like the feel, look, and lacing system. The only question to see will be how they hold up. So far I am very satisfied.

Awesome waterproof shoes. They work amazingly well as an alternative lightweight waterproof everyday shoe in Fargo winters. I commute daily by bicycle through the winter and it is nice to not get my feet wet. The goretex is also great because it is windproof. I would not recommend running in them, but they work well for light hiking. The shoelace system is super awesome and doesn't put any pressure on your foot.

Great for hardcore camping or just mowing the lawn. They keep your feet dry when the trail is wet. Great traction on the trail or hopping from rock to rock. Give them a try; you won't be disappointed.

These took about two weeks to wear-in. At first they were pretty uncomfortable, but I knew from previous Salomon shoes that it just takes a while for them to form to your feet. So after a few weeks they feel nice and snug. I've walked in the rain and my feet stay nice and dry.

This is the second pair that I have owned. I wore the first pair nearly everyday for 21 months and now use them for outside chores. They are about my favorite pair of shoes ever (and I'm 58 years old).
Now, if they could only be made to look like black leather wingtips......

Comments about Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra CS WP Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:
I purchased this shoe for summer hiking and backpacking and it has served me well. I prefer a low top shoe but I needed something sturdy enough to handle tough terrain while carrying a 50lb backpack. The sales rep where I bought these said he knew someone who wore these on a through hike of the PCT and this was the only low top he would trust for rigorous backpacking. After 60+ trail miles I don't think I would ever need any other shoe. They are the most comfortable shoes I own and If I could afford a second pair I'd wear one around town on any rainy Portland day.
REI lists these as trail runners. I don't trail run but I seriously doubt that is this shoes intended purpose. They are super stiff on the botton. This is great when you need to step yourself and a heavy pack up a step using only the shoes' toebox. I don't see how that would come into play "trail running". I have to think there are lighter more flexible shoes that would be much better for that purpose. For fastpacking though, OK, Yes, these are awesome.
The shoes are definitely waterproof. Hiking in a wetland in February I unintentionally stepped into the marsh while turning to tell my wife, who was wearing sneakers the trail ahead was looking too wet for her shoes and that we should head back. She looked at me and then at my foot which was completely submerged in brown mucky water to just a millimeter or two below my ankle. She was stunned that I was standing there with my foot submerged. I looked down and saw what she was looking at. I had no idea because the shoe was totally impervious to the water. (Of course I was lucky I didn't sink an inch lower or water would have poored in at the ankle). My foot remained completely dry. I hiked a mile back in absolute comfort. When I returned to the car and removed my shoe my sock was as dry as if I had just pulled it from a dryer in the Sahara.
The only thing that isn't perfect about these shoes is the webbing that holds the top laces and slider. The seam on one shoes webbing seperated almost immediately. The function is still served even with the seperated seam and it is nothing a needle, thread and 3 minutes couldn't fix. The no-tie lacing system is amazing BTW. I am very tall and getting down to re-tie shoes is not something I miss at all.
I do not understand the low ratings this shoe has on this site. I attribute it either to the the miscategorization of a burley hiker as a trail runner or to trolls who work for some competing shoe company who don't want word to spread that these shoes are simply awesome.
To those who said these shoes aren't water proof - well that's just crazy sauce. Maybe the waterproofing will break down at some point but I haven't seen it yet. I expect I will wear out other parts of the shoe through heavy mileage long before that becomes an issue.

Comments about Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra CS WP Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:
I got these because I have a narrow heel/low volume foot. These seem to run a little on the narrow side for a medium width, which is great for me and an exception for Salomon. Still, they have plenty of room in the toe box. Most of Salomon's stuff is wide. I usually add orthotics for arch support and fill, but didn't have to with these.
The speed lacing works great and is powerful enough to pull it in on my low volume foot. It pulls down evenly and very tight with little effort. Even more so after some break in, although these don't need any break in. I questioned how well the very thin lace system would hold up. The salesman said the thin lacing system is very durable; just don't pull on the fitting on the end when tightening or it will come apart (the most common complaint). I grab the lace with one hand and pull to tighten while sliding the tensioner fitting down to the shoe with the other hand. Big bonus: they never come untied! The lacing can be replaced. They had replacement sets at the store when I got theses.
I can't attest to the water resistance. I have only been wearing them for casual dress. The green and black is acceptable to me for casual wear/work. I am always looking for a sports wear shoe that looks like a "casual dress" shoe enough so that I can wear with kakis. etc. If they came in brown, and or black I would even wear them with a suit.
I have run in them for short burst and they seem to have good support and cushion.

I really want to like these trail running shoes, but one of the main reasons I purchased these was because they were listed as waterproof. Well, I got mine in a few days after ordering online with REI, wore them out in the rain and my socks got wet at the toes and a bit on the bottom. I thought maybe my feet were clammy or something. I wore them out in a couple of inches of snow... socks got wet again.
I sent them back to REI thinking they were defective and REI shipped me a new pair at no charge (great job REI!). I wore this new pair in the rain... wet socks again. I wore them in the snow and ice this winter... wet socks all the time. Folks, these shoes are NOT waterproof by any stretch of the imagination.
I will have to say, in dry weather, these shoes are great performers on my feet. I like the rugged design and the quick lacing system. They took a few weeks to break in and feel really, really comfortable. But I did not experience any blistering or chafing during the break in.
I really wanted to give these shoes more stars, but the whole un-waterproof nature of the product overshadowed all the good features.
Minus one for Salomon, Plus one for REI's excellent customer service.

Comments about Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra CS WP Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:
I bought these for a trip up Half Dome. I wanted a shoe that was lighter than my backpacking boots for the long trek. While the shoes were comfortable in the store and had a nice aggressive tread, the soles on the trail were miserable. These soles would be okay for light dirt trails but nothing with rocks. I could feel every rock on the way and my feet were badly bruised after the hike. Additionally, the mid sole foam is soft and doesn't offer much support if your feet pronate.
