Rated4out of5byJ4TAfromGreat Trail ShoesI use these shoes primarily for trail running but sometimes my trails do take me onto paved roads. I do try to avoid pavement as some reviews complain about excessive wear which I haven't seen. The first several runs didn't help my confidence in these shoes as I did get a couple of blisters. I don't tend to buy insoles so that may be why but considering my history with Salomon boots, I felt they would break in similarly. As with the boots, these tend to be narrower than average but I have narrow feet and are perfect for me in regards to width. If you have wide feet you may run into problems. The break in time was longer than my experience with their boots but after about 20 miles or so, I stopped having any blister problems and I didn't require an additional insole.
My only criticism is the tightening strap. It has worked well and I've babied it but it does tend to come loose after about 4 miles and I can't help but feel that one wrong tug and it'll snap, potentially leaving me stranded without a lace to tighten my shoe.
I would recommend these to a friend

Rated4out of5byJiggityfromPerfect Multi Purpose ShoeI purchased these shoes so that I could use them in some obstacle/mud races. My first race with them is still a month away and I have fallen in love with these shoes. As part of my training I have been doing a lot of trail running and these have made a tremendous difference on the amount of traction I have on the trail. In addition to the running I have used them as hiking shoes (when my Vasque boots aren't needed) and as approach shoes when I go climbing. They are extremely comfortable and have noticed a decrees in any foot pain that I used to feel after long runs or hikes. The only negative thing that I have noticed is that you have very little traction if you are on a hard smooth surface (such as a wood bridge going across of a creek on the trail). I will definately be getting another pair of these if this current pair ever wears out.

Rated5out of5byBulldawg7fromGreat, Comfortable ShoeThe are great shoes for those that need extremely great arch support and pronation control. So light, it feels as if you have no shoes at all. Good for standing all day while working. The colors are different but not to too flashy/bizarre. Would definitely recommend! I bought these on a reccomendation from a REI sales person---no regrets--even though I came in for some Keen Boots!!

Rated5out of5byKe12Ho66fromGreat ProductThese are great running / hiking sneaks. My main issue is finding comfortable footwear. I over-pronate and have narrow feet and this creates issues with athletic footwear. These were great right out of the box. I do add soft arch supports for comfort because I am so used to them, but to be honest, not sure they are needed with these shoes. I liked them so much I bought a second pair. One pair is an everyday shoe for walking the dog and around town when I want to be comfortable. The other pair are my active shoes for trail runs and hiking. I also loved that they came in black. I don't like all of the fancy colors sneaks come in today and the black (with a little red) was perfect. It looks like they changed that and I don't like the new bright colors so much. Hopefully my two pair will last awhile.

Rated4out of5byWoods WandererfromSturdy and SecureI have a narrow foot and tend to over-pronate. I went from Merrill boots to these and love the change. The Merrill's, I learned, were too wide of a shoe for me and Salomon's usually run narrow. Naturally they fit much, much better. I wear them with my green Super Feet and I am in love.

Rated3out of5byAlaskaWildsfromTall ShoeI have run in Solomon shoes for the past six years. My last shoes were Solomon XR Crossmax's. I dropped into REI and grabbed the XT Wings because they looked like the replacement for the Crosmax. However, on my first run I discovered they are much taller. They are very comfortable but the tongue and uppermost lacing eyelet is 3/4" taller than my old shoes. This produced intolerable chafing on the inside of my ankle until it almost bled.
Great shoe, just not the same as my old ones and too tall for me.

Rated4out of5byfrontrangeriderfromExcellent Multi-Purpose ShoeTo preface, my feet are about average width, but I have higher than normal arches.
After trying most others in the store nothing compared to the support, comfort, breathability, and grip of this shoe.
Prior to going on an 80mile backpacking trip with this shoe I took it on one three mile trail run. The shoe broke in quickly and felt very comfortable.
Over the 80 mile backpacking trip we encountered everything from single track to light scrambling on sandstone mountains. The shoe provided excellent traction and support in all of these conditions, even when slightly wet. They dried out quickly after an accidental fall into a stream and didn't get overly wet from morning dew. I didn't encounter any noticeable hot-spots or parts of the design that stuck out as causing discomfort. All of the materials held up to this punishment quite well, with no failures to date. Additionally, the large toe-cap and high instep provided great protection from low lying rocks and ruts.
Overall this shoe far outperformed my "Light" hiking Merrill Moab's in every category. They breathe better, are lighter, more cushy, have excellent lateral and fore-aft support, and deliver more grip. My toe never hits the front and the lace system really provides good pressure distribution and quick adjustments. This shoe will be great for those looking to hike Colorado 14ers, summer backpacking trips, and trail/mountain running.
The only reason I didn't give it max stars was because the La Sportiva Raptor has slightly better grip for scrambling and a little more cushioning (although it wasn't as comfortable on my foot).
For those with high arches I would recommend an insert, which I have now added, but for shorter distances you can get by without. Also, those with wide feet may find this shoe a little tight, as it provides a lot of lateral support.

Rated5out of5byzimmzaryfromLikeI've been buying Salomon trail shoes with one exception for like 10 years, and the exception was a mistake, so I'm back to Salomon. These shoes are great and wear well. The tread on the wings is nice especially in that it has nice grip, but is not so detailed as to be hard to clean or pick up lots of rocks.
