I did not purchase this from REI, since they do not do install. I do not know how to install these products and my car needed a custom permanent mount. They do make this available with a door mount which did not look too hard, but for me it was cheaper to have a permanent solution.You will get the same price anywhere you shop, about $389 without tax. More expensive then other solutions but worth it for quality.It looks like something that came out of the factory with my car and driving home with it was amazing. No noises! It also works with any attachment!Highly recommended. Would have bought from REI if they offered installation.

This is a fantastic product. It is incredibly quiet, looks great, and is very sturdy. I have no issue leaving this product permanently mounted to my 4Runner. I didn't want to spend the extra money because the base model round bars are approximately half the price, if I recall correctly, but I was concerned the round bars would be noisy and an eyesore when the box I purchased was not mounted. I also do not like that the round bars extend beyond the towers. I decided to spend the extra money and I am happy that I did.

These bars are easy to install (sort of), but I have never encountered such awful installation instructions in my entire life. I am a fairly handy person and my dad is super handy, but we both misinterpreted the instructions with regard to the foot that comes with the bars. The bars come ready to install on some kind of vehicle, I am not sure which. If you have to also order a fit kit, chances are you will need to remove the foot that comes with the Whispbar. Once you do that the instructions should get you the rest of the way. I had to call Yakima for help. Eventually they were able to explain to me that the foot the Whispbar comes with needs to be removed and replaced with my specific fit kit. It seems obvious in retrospect that you cannot have two different types of feet, but when we were looking at this equipment for the first time and the instructions were generic and unclear it wasn't so obvious in the moment. It never occurred to us that Yakima would issue the bars with a foot system if we must buy the fit kit separately. It took us over an hour to sort this out and get the bars installed. However, I could do it by myself right now in five minutes. This product would be easier to install with a bit more detailed instructions or possibly by not including a foot system with the Whispbar in the first place. After some initial frustration I am a satisfied customer. To Yakima's credit their customer service was helpful and patient.

The only reason I do not give this product five stars is because of the installation instructions. If I were to separate the product from its instructions it is easily a five star product.

It has a very low profile. This rack actually sits quite a bit lower than the Subaru factory racks, and was incredibly quick and easy to install on my Impreza with the fixed mounting points. It also works great with my Yakima Frontloader bike racks, no additional compatibility attachments needed. No noise at all, I'm not sure I can find much wrong with the rack.
