The REI dividend is a unique benefit of membership in the REI co-op. It's comprised of your member refund—typically 10% back on eligible purchases—and/or your REI Visa® card rebates.
Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.
Only active members receive annual dividend notices. To maintain your active status as an REI member, you need to make net merchandise or shipping purchases of at least $10 per year, unless you joined that year. Member numbers are issued in one name and only that person receives the member refund. Your number can be used by others in your family, but it cannot be transferred to someone else.

by Liz in BostonfromBag is Fine; Strap is Not Well Padded and StiffThe bag itself is fine, although a couple of outside zipper pockets accessible without lifting the flap would help. The strap supplied is stiff and has very little padding. I replaced the strap with the Op Tech USA S.O.S. strap which has great padding and is much higher quality material. Highly recommend upgrading the strap.

by Jam jrfromPerfect for schoolI am a law student and I routinely have to carry around multiple heavy text books, a computer, and everything else needed to survive a couple days in a library. I also commute about an hour and a half. This bag has stepped up to every expectation and requirement I have placed on it. It is comfortable and roomy. I have had no problem fitting everything into it and the separate computer compartment really helps organizing everything. No complaints at all from me. If you are in the market for a bag for the office or school this is definitely the one.

by Tom frequent travelerfromToo smallBought this to replace an Eddie Bauer messenger bag that I have had for more than ten years. I travel frequently and carry a 15 inch laptop and a portable printer. I wanted something that was TSA compliant so I would not have to take everything out to clear security. The bag spec's say it should be large enough but my lap top would not fit in the laptop sleeve. In addition with the printer in the bag I could not fit the two power cords. Better bring your gear to the store first to make sure it fits

by AlperfromGood backpack for biking, small travelGood backpack. I had some dividend available and I wanted a commuting messenger bag that would be comfortable while riding my bike, but also extensible for short airplane trips. This bag does pretty well to achieve those goals.
I picked this bag over most other bags for the following reasons (and these are most definitely its strengths):
- Front pockets are not lie-flat like a bunch of other Timbuk2 bags, which means they can actually carry items such as cameras, locks, and sunglasses
- Separate back pocket does a wonderful job holding a laptop, making it easy to retrieve (14" laptop)
- Compartments inside the main bag (two mesh pockets on either side of the bag, rear flap) do a good job in keeping small items organized
- Does a good job keeping the water out; I was out in a downpour in this bag and the inside stayed surprisingly dry
- Comfortable to carry when walking around (~1hr)
The downside (but still not a deal-breaker) is that the shoulder pad is very stiff and doesn't conform to the curvature of the upper body, so it occasionally slips when I'm hopping on my bike. Timbuk2 sells an alternate shoulder strap that would probably do a better job, so it's disappointing that an inferior pad is used on this bag.
The strap itself, even at its smallest length, is still pretty long, although the bag itself sits nicely on my back when I'm riding. However, if you're much shorter than 6' you might want to try this out in the store beforehand if you care about comfort while biking.

by PTwofromGreat bag for workI bought this bag as a combination Christmas gift to myself and promtion gift. I love it. It fits my work laptop perfectly in the laptop side in addition to my kindle. I use the inside pouches for the random chargers and knicknacks. Additionally I can stuff a few gym clothes in there with a water bottle and my lunch and it is still comfortable.
I love the ease of the adjustable strap to work with different loads. If only day it is fairly empty then I can adjust on the fly when I fill it up with stuff.
It was a breeze to get through TSA when I was flying about and held everything I needed for the airplane and if I didn't get my luggage. It fit nicely under the seat in front of me and in the overhead bins.
The only down side I have found in my uses is that the external pockets don't quite seem to fit my big Kleen Kanteen water bottle. No biggie I just toss it inside of the bag but I had to make others aware. Granted the bottle I have is large and doens't fit most places but that's the only negative of this bag.
