Great Screenhouse for Kayaking
BDN
I purchased this to take kayaking in SE Alaska in Misty Fjords Wildernes in 2013. We were very happy to have this along as the noseeums were terrible. Three of us sat in the 9 x 9 ft screen house for Breakfast and dinner and cooked in there and visited. Absolute pleasure with no bugs. When it rained the water ran off nicely and did not come through the mesh screen. We strung it between two trees and used treaking poles to support the other two corners. I am going to take this anytime I go where the bugs will be serious. Easy to set up and take down and the size of the packed unit was not too big. Easily fit in my sea kayak. The sides are easily bent in with a wind so you need to stake it down or put something on the mesh to hold out in a wind. Great product. I also have the Nemo 12 x 12 tarp which we used to cover our tents- also a great product.

Not very robust in wind

Used twice, once in an early winter storm in Yellowstone, in which it performed fine. The second time was in back yard in Seattle during the first wind storm of the season. It was supported with 4 poles guyed to trees all around, and the 2 main corners tore. (See attached). I don't know how strong the gusts were, but since it was sheltered on all sides by house, fences, and trees, I doubt there were any local gusts greater than about 20 kt. Regardless, the construction of the corner reinforcment is poor in my opinion, especially the seams.

Awesome

This was our favorite piece of gear for Boundary Waters this year (2016). It kept us and our gear dry. Kept the bugs, frogs, and mice, out! Super easy to pitch and put away. Loved the versatility with how high or low it could be pitched. Much whiskey was consumed in this shelter while storms and bugs were kept at bay.

Best screenhouse I have used!

I've guided overnight seakayak trips in Everglades National Park for years where the noseeums and mosquitoes are legendary. They invariably come out just as I serve dinner so a screen tent makes the differance between unbarable and pleasent. I've used several screenhouses over the years and the Bugout is a dream come true. It has many options for setting it up, I particularly like the fact that I can roll up the screen before taking it down keeping dew wetted netting from picking up sand, bits of shell and sand spurs as it never has to hit the ground. I also love that you can run a hammock through it because of the 3 zipper pulls and the position of the doors. It worked perfectly with my turtle/dog hammock stand. There really is no other sreenhouse on the market that compares for use in the Everglades! The only drawback is to use some poles requires a slight modification. The grommets are larger than some other brand poles and just slip right past the pin and over the pole itself. I tied some plastic washers near the grommets so I could use some old Noah's Tarp poles but have switched to the Nemo poles which are much nicer. I could not survive the Winter in the Everglades without a screentent and this is far and away my favorite

Good idea but only practical in perfect conditions

Seemed like a great solution for rain and bugs. I tried it out in South Florida in partially wooded area but not suspended to trees. The grommets are too large for any tarp pole I have ever seen in my 25yrs of camping, so I had to lash the grommet/pole with the guy line. I set it up to the suggested heights (as per pictures) but low enough to have about 3-5 inches of extra mesh on the ground and staked all four corners. Quickly noticed the slightest breeze would lift the sides and funnel in bugs, so I then staked the middle of each side. (by this time, there so many bugs stuck inside that my wife renamed it the "bug-in shelter"). As a rain approached we got some winds of about 10-12mph. The grossly undersized stakes quickly failed despite the relatively hard ground. As the two low corners broke loose, my wife and I managed to quickly jump and hold the two higher corner poles as the entire thing wanted to fly away. The next day I found that the two high corner grommets were pulling out just as I saw on another review. The overall 12'x12' size is great for going around any picnic table, but the size is a negative with even a light (10-12mph) wind. The reason I gave 2 stars and not 1 is because this can be nice if you have plenty of trees to tie to and no wind. Another negative is that you must use both hands to open the zipper even when staked down because the staked side holds down but the other side must be held down as well for the zipper to move. I returned it.

Great!

Bought the 12x12 just befire a recent BWCA trip; liked the larger size: if I need to I can set up my 7x9 for man tent inside and still have room to roam. It performed great on our trip, keeping out rain and bugs. It can be challenging to find enough room at many BWCA campsites with a 17' diagonal, and we had to get creative at our first site. At our 2nd campsite there were no tent pads smooth enough to sleep on that fit our tent so we set up the Bug Out and slept under that. Best sleep we had! It packs down to roughly the same size and weight as my 4 man tent. I added 2 adjustable alum poles from MSR for the lower corners and they worked great.

Wish it didn’t leak

Bought for July 2022 trip to BWCA as I knew mosquitoes would be bad. Easy to set up. Second day at a base camp had rain/2 separate thunderstorms. Top tarp leaked quite a bit over all areas. Rain was moderate to heavy at times but top tarp NOT waterproof. Quite disappointed as this was it’s first use. Does keep most bugs out, but some still got in, I assume either when people entered/exited or under side screen walls when wind blew and gaps appeared at bottom of walls. Wish there were more stake out loops along side mesh walls to keep that from happening. Not much head room at low corners, making those areas hard to use for much. Overall, pretty good, but SURE wish it did not leak with rain. Makes it much less functional!

One potential problem

Bought for the BWCA and it is easy to set up and keeps the bugs and rain out. DO NOT, however set it up with the long center rope between trees. I did and my second night out and a windy storm blew in. It lifted the tarp like a parachute and since the netting was staked down it ripped it all up. REI took it back but no longer had the big ones so I could not replace it. I would have happily done so. One other small thing. If it was hot and I was looking for a cool breeze it surprised me how much it cut the breeze down. Good product and a great place to shop.

Two thumbs up

We were very impressed with the design and quality of the Nemo Bugout. The way the tarp is angled and the height of the screen varied accordingly gives the ability to actually use the entire footprint without worrying about water being able to drain off. Set up is easy, assuming you have enough well-placed trees to work with. Black screen is great, kept the bugs out and still allows you to see out. Seems to be very well made. This will absolutely be a staple on all our BWCA trips.
