Comments about Chaco Updraft Sandals - Men's:
I love Chaco and have had 4 or 5 pairs that I used heavily and got excellent use out of them.
Saw these on sale and thought I would jump on the deal, seeing as how my last pair had worn out last summer. I wish I had paid more attention to the pictures because it ended up being one of the worst experiences out on trail. I wore them on a overnight trip in the mountains, something I have done countless times before with no issue.
However, it was because of the little plastic (or whatever material it is made of) connector that I got some very severe rubbing/blisters on the side of my foot, roughly on the top of my arches.
Not what I would expect from Chaco. Leaves me a little confused as to what they were thinking. Still a fan of the brand, just not this model.

Comments about Chaco Updraft Sandals - Men's:
These sandals have a very different strap design. It takes some getting use to. I did finally master the straps. But, the first time that I wore them, they squeeked! I thought that they would stop after awhile. They didn't. The squeek comes from my foot rubbing on the footbed. They will never break in.
I returned them to REI.

Comments about Chaco Updraft Sandals - Men's:
I really wanted to love these sandals. They are light and fit my feet perfectly with one exception - the rigid plastic posts under the ankle bone are extremely painful. I have worn chaos for years and have had no problems. I bought the Updrafts, they felt good in the store, so I figured everything was perfect. Then I spent a day walkin

Comments about Chaco Updraft Sandals - Men's:
Chaco brand sandals typically receive very high reviews but with this particular model I must point out a major design flaw. Unlike the older models, this one utilizes hard rubber strap joins - the nylon straps are sawed to these at either side of the sandals. When walking on an even surface, the sandals perform wonderfully. However, if you are going out hiking, where the surfaces are typically uneven, those rubber strap joins dig into the sides of the foot. So much so that after a 5 mile hike I had both of my feet bleeding... I will also say that this is after having worn the sandals for over two weeks, so it's not like they needed braking in... Fortunately, REI has a very generous return policy and I was able to return them without questions asked. In the end, this is not a good pair of sandals at all, but consider getting Choco Z/1 or Z/2 models - those use a flexible nylon joint.
Comments about Chaco Updraft Sandals - Men's:
The hard plastic piece that joins the straps below the outside ball of the ankle is placed so that it bites into your ankle. It feels like a three year old clamping down on your ankle bone. These went right back to REI.

Comments about Chaco Updraft Sandals - Men's:
This purchase was made in a store for my 9 year old son who has Men's size 7 wide feet. Its REALLY difficult to find shoes for him thatfit, dont look too old but are up to snuff as far as durability. These fit the bill. He wears these every day because they are easy to slip on. I purchased a pair of Keens last summer and he wouldnt wear them unless prompted b/c they were hard to get on his foot which is wide. Also, his Keens started smelling bad after a month or so of wear even though I would clean them and so far these haven't. My husband and I both have a pair of Chacos that we have had for 4-5 years that we love so I thought I would bite the bullet and get these in hopes we could pass the down to my second son!

Comments about Chaco Updraft Sandals - Men's:
I had never heard of Chaco before seeing this sandal at REI. I purchased the sandal in preparation for a hiking vacation and decided to test the same day with a 6-mile hike. The plastic tabs located under the ankle were a problem as expected. I contacted the manufacturer who pointed me in the direction of the original model Z1. REI Exchanged the updraft for the Z1, which worked out perfectly for my trip. Thanks REI and Chaco.

Comments about Chaco Updraft Sandals - Men's:
Purchased the Unaweep Z2 four years ago and they spent most of the last four years in storage as the toe strap gave me blisters. At a rare visit to REI Dallas, I found out about REI's return policy so I returned the Unaweeps and purchased the Updraft model without the toe strap.
Shortly after purchase, I did a 14 mile hike in the Gila with numerous crossings of the Gila River. The Updraft were my only footwear and wore them without socks. No blisters and now I wear them everyday as long as I am not on my motorcycle. Great product.

Comments about Chaco Updraft Sandals - Men's:
I am a die hard Chacos fan. My Z/1's were on their last legs, so I decided to give the updraft a try. Did a short hike with the kids, and by the end both ankle were chaffed to the point of bleeding. The cuprit seems to be the new rubber/plastic risers. My Z/1s used webbing, and cause no problems, but these hard plastic riser stab my ankles every time my foot rolls. I am sure this would not be the case for everyone, but I urge you to try them out in the store before you buy. My pair is going to have to go back.

Comments about Chaco Updraft Sandals - Men's:
The newer curved heel bed on all Chacos, combined with the solid-as-concrete Vibram boards that underlie the whole sandal, causes the strap to chafe the inside of your heel, creating blisters if you wear them for any distance. They are now useless for doing any actual real outdoor activity. The review above saying "you need to break in your sandals" is idiocy, likely written by a Chacos employee. Sandals are the simplest and most open shoe design possible, with the fewest attachment points. They don't require a "break in" period. They're not alpine boots. For [$] you get, essentially, 3 layers of synthetics glued around a piece of webbing; you'd think they would make them comfortable and durable, as they used to be before they redesigned the footbed and switched to concrete-like Vibram soles. The older chacos, using non-Vibram soles (like climbing rubber and other bendy-but-durable rubber materials) are like gold now. River guides get their old chacos resoled, rather than buy these unusable Vibram boards. I expect that Chacos, and their Chinese manufacturer, will soon be out of business, like so many other initially-awesome products created by actual outdoors people, then sold to big companies who genericized, cheapened, and ruined the product while riding the coattails of the original reputation created by the awesome pre-sellout design and creators. Bye bye Chacos.
