I love to take long walks. I am 70 years old and like to stay warm when I am outdoors during inclement weather. I decided to by the smaller head size although my head size fits right in the middle of the sizing span. It is a little tight but for a cool weather hat, I find it will not blow off in a very stiff breeze. I like the arched visor for the rain / snow side protection it provides when my ear flaps are down over my ears. These flaps cover my ears with some comfortable room to spare. I have noticed a slight expansion of the head band after some use. Before buy this hat, I would strongly recommend a visit to your REI store to try on both sizes before purchasing this hat. With the ear flaps in the storage position, the hat sits a little bit higher on my head. The best part is when it is cold and the ear flaps are needed, the hat sits a little bit lower and the ear flaps are down around the back of my neck greatly reducing my exposre to cold stiff wind blasts from my back side.

My husband loved this hat as I knew he would. He doesn't have a terribly large head but XL was way too small. We so wished it fit as it was just what he was looking for.

This hat is a great combination of warmth without looking big and bulky. However, the L/XL size is tight on my husband. He can still wear it but it would be better if it were slightly larger. Other L/XL hats he tried on were a little roomier but they didn't offer this perfect combination of style, warmth, and water resistance so he's hoping this very snug fit will loosen up a little and be okay.
