Have taken two of my pre-teen kids out with me on the kayak; one in front and one in the middle. Did great in river inlet; also crossed the Potomac River from VA to DC with ease despite river current and larger boat wakes.

I decided to get my own Tribe 13.5 after using both versions that belong to a good friend that uses them in his kayak rental business. After 3 seasons of hard use, from being dragged up the rocky beaches by the kids that work for him to all of the renters in flicted abuse out on the rocky Norwalk Islands the boats still look great! They have even managed to keep the loud Lime green color despite sitting out in the direct sun all season.

The 13.5 is a great boat that I almost didnt buy. I wanted a double but also wanted to be able to paddle it by myself. I first tried it on one of my friends boats and it was disaster! The boat wouldn't track and got blown around quite easy by the wind. Then it occurred to me that the boat is designed for 500lbs max... with just me in the boat it was only 230lbs. Being a sailor, I know about displacement and how that contributes to the way a hull preforms. I went back down and tried it again, only this time I brought 2 10L dry bags. I filled the bags with sea water and placed one bag directly behind me in what would be the rear seat and the other between my calfs.

It was like paddling a different boat!

It tracked beautifully and because of the extra weight, it really kept it's momentuem. Now I call it my "Island Stationwagon". So, if you are going to use this as a single just add some weight or just remember that you could easily add 100+lbs of gear and it will only make the boat preform better!

This week I am going to get the 11.5 of this for when I just want to go on my own without a lot of gear. Or if I want to have another person go with me and I will carry all the gear.

The only 2 things I don't like is the color... The tangerine is great and will get that for my single. My 13.5 is Tangerine and white... It looks like a popcicle. And the leg room in the rear seat could be a few inches more, but I am 6'2... other than that... great boat!

My wife and I love this kayak because it's easy to use with the whole family. After work we usually hit up the Deschutes River in town or one of our local high lakes in the Cascade Range. We can get our young son and large Black Lab in the kayak so the whole family has fun using it! I highly recommend this kayak for anyone looking for a good day-use kayak for the family.

This Kayak has worked out very well for my wife and I. We have taken it offshore and it provides a smooth and dry ride in light to moderate seas. There is plenty of leg room and the included seats are comfortable for a long day on the water. We are very pleased with REI and Perception Kayaks
