I bought this Kayak to replace a ski boat that was totaled the previous year since I wanted to get out on the water, but never seemed to be able to launch my ski boat as often as I liked. As an introductory kayak, it is everything I was looking for, good price, sturdy build, stable, open cockpit for easy entry and exit. As I started taking a few classes -I highly recommend any new paddler taking at least a class or two to learn how to better control your kayak as well as how to rescue yourself if you do tip over- I learned that while I do love putting around and just being on the water, I also wanted to do some sea kayaking and playing in the waves, rip currents, tides, rock gardens, and more adventurous areas. The Elie sound is a great boat on flat water where there is little chance of falling out. There is no forward bulkhead, so if you do fall out, that huge cockpit takes on a lot of water when you turn it back over, which means a lot of pumping before you can climb back in -make sure you get a hand pump, or you will be towing this boat full of water to shore if you have to get back in. I have not tried an assisted rescue, but the fact that the front gets so heavy with water, I think it would have to be done differently than the rescues I learned in the classes I took since the front may be too heavy to lift out of the water. The kayak has a very high initial stability -that means that it is very good about staying flat on the water-which is great for flat water, but if you get into rougher water, it will feel like you are being tossed around a lot more and greatly increase the chance of having to do a wet exit. My wife is not a kayaker, but I would feel perfectly comfortable putting her in this boat and sending her out on a calm lake for a paddle with little or no instruction about how to handle the boat. I plan to keep this boat for friends and family that are not experienced paddlers because it is suck a great beginner boat, I may even try a little fishing on it some day although I may have to fit it with some rod holders first.

I would definitely recommend this to a friend for flat water use, or if they have an unadventurous spouse or kids. For some one like myself that will quickly progress beyond flat water paddling, I would recommend going to a higher end kayak, unless you can afford to purchase multiple boats in a short period of time.

This is my first kayak so I don't have anything to compare it to which is why I only gave it 4 stars, though its perfect for what I need and couldn't be happier with my choice. The ELIE Sound 120 is a very stable kayak and flows smoothly through the water, I've had a lot of fun using it and always look forward to using it again. I would consider this to be a great fit for anyone ranging from beginner-advanced classes.
