I bought this to take on day hikes. I was very unhappy with the quality of the material and the size. It was smaller than my backpack in college. I don't think I could fit 2 books in it. I never took it hiking. I returned it and will get something larger and better quality.
On the plus, side, it did have a nice section inside with lots of pockets for little things - i.e. pencils, pens, calculater.

I bought this backpack from REI-Outlet, but subsequently returned it. I live in Oregon, and I needed a backpack that would keep my laptop dry when I walk a few blocks to school. It seemed to me that the raincover/ shoulder strap combination left something to be desired. Other backpacks I've seen that have rain covers have the shoulder straps a little lower, allowing the rain cover to come fully over the top. I was too concerned that this would get the contents of my backpack wet.

Also, this pack doesn't have much room. It only has one book-sized pocket. That pocket does have some great internal storage areas, but it just wasn't going to cut it for my uses.

So I saw the other reviews....welcome to the world of backpacks, if you are wanting a Mercedes class pack, you are going to be paying for it. Sure this is not an Arc'Tyrex but it is a great pack for [$]! I do lots of trail running and day trips, this pack is perfect for just that or I guess if you needed it for laptop, books, etc...it would be ideal for that as well. If I needed room for more gear, I would be using another pack that would best suited for my needs. I would suggest this pack and as a matter of fact, guess what some friends are getting for upcoming birthday gifts?!?
