Comments about JanSport Odyssey Daypack:
This pack is awesome. I bought it to use for 1 or 2 night business trips. I've taken it on 3 trips so far, and it's been perfect. My travel companions are always surprised to see me with only 1 bag. (Of course, traveling with only 1 bag requires you to be pretty diligent about packing lightly, so don't expect to cram all your bulky shoes, hairdryers, etc. in there.)
I've been able to carry a standard 15" laptop, related cords/accessories, a few business files, change of clothes and toiletries, kindle/ipod/etc with no problem, and I was still able to put the bag under the seat on each flight and not use the overhead bin. There have been times before that I had to check my regular-size carryon because there wasn't anymore overhead space left, which is exactly why I started looking for an all purpose bag like this. I was even able to fit a small North Face laptop bag in there as well so I can carry that into the office once I reach my destination rather than the whole backpack.
The straps are very comfortable. I've had to walk through crowded airports, and this pack carries great. There's a small hip belt which I have not used. I keep it neatly tucked away behind the back panel. If you're using this pack for day hiking, the hip belt may help to keep the load stable, but it's not heavily padded so don't expect too much support.
My only minor complaint is that I wish the compression straps where placed a little higher to compact the load better.

Comments about JanSport Odyssey Daypack:
I never write reviews but I found it almost neccessary because if it weren't for one of REI's salespeople I wouldn't have even given this backpack a look. Mainly because I always viewed JanSport backpacks as backpacks for school.
Before going to the store I browsed REI's website and others and narrowed my search down to 3 packs from 3 different manufacturers and JanSport wasn't one of them. I wanted a pack that could do everything. Well not everything, but a lot. The 3 main requirements were: 1. lots of cargo space. 2. a place for a hydration reservoir. 3. a place for a laptop. The JanSport Odyssey had what I was looking for and more.
In it's description it says "a laptop sleeve with padded bottom doubles as a hydration-compatible compartment" which led me to believe it was one sleeve which can be used for either a laptop or hydration reservoir, but not both at the same time. Mine actually has a separate sleeve for a 100 oz. hydration reservoir with zippered access on the top of the pack, and it has a separate laptop pocket which is located in the main compartment. I don't know if it's a mistake in the description or if mine is a newer model. Make sure before you buy. It also has 2 zippered main compartments, an organizer compartment with a hook for your keys, space for pens, notebook, etc., and 2 zippered mesh pockets. The outermost zippered compartment can hold a notebook, a light jacket or similar. On the outside of the pack it has a zippered stash pocket for easy access, 2 mesh waterbottle pockets, a daisy chain to lash stuff to or to hang stuff off using a carabiner, an ice axe loop, side compression straps, grab handle, padded and ventilated back panel and shoulder straps, a sternum strap and a stow-away waist strap (they call it a hipbelt, but it's just a strap).
Since I just bought it I can't comment on it's durability, but it's well made with quality materials and it has a lifetime guarantee.
The only con for me was it didn't have enough straps. I would have liked some lashing straps on the bottom of the bag and upper and lower compression straps on each side instead of 1 diagonal compression strap on each side. A wider waist strap or a padded hipbelt would also be nice, especially when fully loaded. For me this is only enough to take away a half point of the rating but since you can't rate it 4.5 stars, I kept it at 5 stars.
The pictures and descriptions don't always do an item justice, so my advice to you is to do some research online and get an idea of what you want, then go to an REI store, look around, compare products, talk to the salespeople, and ask questions. They're there to help. And no I'm not an employee of REI or affiliated with REI in any way other than being a satisfied customer.

Comments about JanSport Odyssey Daypack:
I recently had to replace my Jansport Odyssey back pack with the latest version, and was sadly dissappointed. While is is lighter, it lacks sufficient padding in the straps and backing. I'm happy that they have kept the style the same. The pockets are perfect, and I especially like the laptop sleeve. I just wish is was as comfortable as the previous version.

Comments about JanSport Odyssey Daypack:
I have owned this same model pack for approximately 10 years and the only thing they seem to have changed is perhaps the geometry and a few new pockets. I am such a fan of this pack as it has traveled reliably with me through 9 different countries and continues to perform like the day i purchased it.
I must confess that i have been looking at the new version just to upgrade my gear, but that is not a slight on the old version. Just my love of new gear.
All seams, pockets, pouches, zippers, and straps remain in fantastic and working order and the only problems are a missing pull tab on one zipper and a fraying water bottle holder. The zipper pull is easily and cheaply fixed, but as it has two zippers per pocket i have never seen the need.
Not bad for +10 plus years of service from everything to an airplane carry-on, school bag, day pack, over nighter, camping 'survival' pack, fishing tackel box, and adventure 'carry all'.
If the new model is made with the same quality and strength as the old model, then i will find myself no longer multi-tasking one pack, but enjoying multiple pack for multiple adventures.
Unplug, tune-out, and enjoy exploring!

The backpack provided the space i need for school while being light weight so it is easy to bring around. It's also a good backpack for hiking.

Great bag for traveling! I used this on a two week trip to Southeast Asia and I found it to be comfortable and so durable. It has enough pockets that I was able to separate my items nicely, but not too many pockets that I would lose track of where everything was.
I look forward to another trip with it.

Comments about JanSport Odyssey Daypack:
i have had this pack for about a year now... i use it mostly for my EDC for work. i carry every thing from reference books to tools to thing that i need to do my job. basically its my desk. i am an occupational therapist. i am a floater at the hospital where i work, which means that i go do different setting to do my job. i work with people who have hand injuries to people who are very sick in the hospital and people who have neuro deficits like CVA in an outpatient setting.
some people at work make fun because i lug this bag around. they call it my murse. but i call it my B.O.B. or E.D.C. for work. it carries every thing to do my job and then some. what i like most about this back that it very spacious. it organizes and separates all my things just like a desk. you can say it like it is a desk on the go.
i am definitely the type to do research on something before i buy and i do buy things that i can get the best bang for my buck.
so if you are looking for a bag for school or for work or for your EDC or even as a B.O.B. this would be the perfect bag for you.
two fingers up...peace out!!!!!

Comments about JanSport Odyssey Daypack:
I bought this for a 3 week backpacking trip to Central America. I wanted a small backpack - 35-45 liters.
It has a TON of compartments making organization easy, and it is very durable. It survived numerous bus rides, 7 flights (checked and carried-on), strapped on top of mini-buses, etc. and nothing has torn or broken off of it.
It also performed well on an overnight volcano hike/camp out (7 hour hike up, overnight camp, 3+ hour hike down). It would have been more amazing if it had more straps or places you could rope attach things to the outside of the bag. And the hip belt offers no support, but, like the other reviewer said, it does give you some stability.
It does have straps on the side so you can compress the size, which is nice.
I have a smaller body frame (5'3", 120 lbs), and I was worried about the comfort of this pack at the time of purchase. The shoulder straps are pretty far apart for my frame and the back padding was stiff. However, the pack really broke in well throughout the trip and I find it now very comfortable.
I plan to use this on future backpacking travels and as a backup daypack (if it had a better hip belt I would use it as my primary daypack).
There is no perfect pack, but I'm pretty happy with this one.
