Comments about Merrell WaterPro Manistee Water Shoes - Men's:
Bought these shoes for a recent water backpack trip in the Gila Wilderness. This trip was a 25 mile 3 day overnight trip with a 45lb backpack and included over 75 river crossings. The river varied from 12" to 36" deep. River terrain was rocky, sandy, pebbly, muddy. The overall hike consisted of 20 river miles and 5 dry dusty trail miles. These shoes are very light weight, they dry rapidly after fording the river. They appear to be durable...time will tell that one. They are suitable for backpacking, as well as wearing around camp after your hike in. The multi-use aspect of these shoes was nice in that I didn't have to change shoes every time I crossed the river. I did a 7 mile break-in hike prior to the 25 mile backpack trip and they fit fine right out of the box...ie no break-in period required.

Comments about Merrell WaterPro Manistee Water Shoes - Men's:
Are all water shoes like this? The sole is narrower than an equivalent medium width "dry" shoe (but by a lot more than the thickness of a sock), and the arch is higher. Combined, this results in my foot standing on top of the sole's arch edge, and it cuts into my foot like a knife. Same goes for Teva water shoes (all that I tried). I'd try some FiveFingers, but I don't like stuff between my toes... maybe I should just use an old pair of my Asics and thin socks in the water? Maybe that sounds makeshift, but it'll be a lot more comfortable than the ones you can buy. Merrell, Teva, if you want my money, work harder!

Comments about Merrell WaterPro Manistee Water Shoes - Men's:
This summer I was a canoe guide in the BWCA. I bought these shoes at the start of the season (May). I've had a couple Merrell's in the past and have been fairly happy with their performance.
These are great water shoes for a couple of reasons. The drain very well due to a mesh vent in the front right of the shoe. The footbed is excellent and chunks wear away to keep up traction. The lacing system is good and fits well.
However, one major flaw earns these shoes a 2. The straps that connect to the lacing system (in the photo they are orange) quickly (about 6 weeks for me) wear and break. This left me on trail with a pair of shoes that does not lace or fit well. I had to tie the remaining strap to another part of the shoe, but it continually came undone and was a headache for me.
I really like these shoes otherwise, but that design flaw really compromises the shoe. I hope that Merrell redesigns the Manistee next year without the weak strap and hard plastic loop.

I was excited to get these shoes since most river shoes are lacking in construction when it comes to river walking. I bought a pair of Teva Churn shoes before I bought the Merrells. The Merrells are better in every aspect except they are too narrow. After a 6 mile hike in these shoes I had blisters on both of my feet in the same spot. The shoe is about an 1/8" narrower then my Merrell Moab Ventilators. I pulled out the insoles and laid them on top of each other. I don't know why Merrell would make these shoes narrower then the rest of there shoes.

Shoes are always a problem for my feet. I am mid 50's with wide feet. These shoes fit well. I have used these as my main shoe for work and in many surface conditions. Never slipped or felt unstable on them. They are comfortable and are easy on and off thru the airport screenings. I am going to buy another pair because of the over all perfromance of the shoe.

Comments about Merrell WaterPro Manistee Water Shoes - Men's:
These would be great if they came in a wide size. Trying to find a replacement for a Keen H2. I love those shoes but hate the gravel situation. How ever haven't found anything better. I've been through many pair of H2's over the years.
The fit on these Merrell's is quite narrow, which in and of itself isn't too bad as they would probably stretch a bit and it would help to keep out the gravel when wading. But the sole is exceedingly narrow. So much so that I found it almost dangerous as my ankle had a tendency to roll out over the heal. Not good. Never had this problem with the H2's. Side by side the sole on the H2's is much wider and more supportive.
Too bad cause I really like the idea of this mesh shoe. So if you have small narrow feet if might be great. But don't do it if your feet are even a smidge wide.

Comments about Merrell WaterPro Manistee Water Shoes - Men's:
I went into REI to try on the Manistees, and the techamphibians by Solomon. I ended up trying on the Teva Churn and a North Face shoe as well. The best all around shoes are the Manistees.
The solomon are a little easier to get on, but the achille's support was a little weak for me. The material used felt less forgiving and comfortable than the other shoes as well.
The North face shoe fit very well. The sole is very soft which I liked and disliked for the same reason. The whole shoe is much softer than the others tested and that is why I decided against them.
The Teva were ok. They felt tighter than the others through the arch. I want to be able to wear wool socks and also wool and seal skinz at the same time. I declined the Teva Churn because they felt too much like the shoes I am replacing. (Running shoes used for wetfooting with multiply sock layers)
The Manistee have the best support, the best protection from debris, and they just fit the best from heal to toe.
