Comments about The North Face Rolling Thunder Duffel - 31'':

I bought this bag for extended travel trips. I initially bought it at REI because of the size (really large), durability, and the extra compartments. However, after an extended trip I decided to return it using my co-op membership.

The good news about this bag is that it is really large. It can hold LOTS and would be ideal for combining multiple bags into one to avoid baggage fees (keep in mind though you might be placing all of your eggs in one basket, if the airline loses this one bag, you might be out of luck until you are reconnected with it). The material it is made of also makes it extremely durable and nearly water resistant. The material will definitely help get your money out of the bag and the water resistance would help in case your bag gets wet (i.e. waiting to be loaded onto a plane from the runway). However, the good news quickly trails into bad news.

The first feature that I immediately disliked after using the bag was a lack of an extended handle or grip on the two top straps. I'm six feet tall and as I would be walking the bag through the airport or a hotel, I would have to bend my knees to get a grip on the bag because the two handles on the top of the bag don't extend out. In other words, the natural height of the bag doesn't match my height leaving me to lower myself to the bag. That would be fine if there was some extension of the handles, but there is not. I considered adding a webbing handle running between the two handles and back out to get a better grip on the bag, but I decided it might not fix my problem.

Lastly, the bag does not collapse easily for storage. There is a single metal hook inside the bag that fits into to small cloth straps on the inside of the bag pushing the backside of the bag out for support. As far as I could tell, this metal hook wasn't removable and when you tried to push down on the bag to collapse it, the hook was preventing it from collapsing completely. I was attempting to store it under my bed (maybe a 12 inch clearance) and it wouldn't fit.

I decided to return the bag and go with a four wheel hard side polycarbonate suit case that was only $100 more than this bag and holds just a bit less.

Comments about The North Face Rolling Thunder Duffel - 31'':

Did an Oct. 6-12,2011 camping trip to Martha's Vineyard for Striper Derby w/ Fly Rod -- great trip, needed this bag; so I bought it for my Brown Trout trip in Michigan this June.

The airlines hit me with over weight/dimensions for two rolling duffle bags -- I weighed them before their shenanigans -- weight was not true; dimensions suspect, maybe bulges. I'll give them that one.

The North Face bag is airlines permissible in dimensions and has cinching straps inside and outside of the bag. I put the contents of both bags in this bag, plus waders and boots for the June trip and still have room for some more clothes. I think the true rectangle shape throughout the bag adds space over some others, plus more sturdy construction and inside/outside cinching eliminates sag. The true shape as stated should eliminate airline guessing about dimensions.

I was told by someone that knew someone that this bag was dropped in a river and the contents were dry!

One thing is for positive -- one bag charges, not two.
