Updated for 2010, the Black Diamond Apollo lantern is brighter than the previous version yet still features a dimming switch so you can set the lighting for nighttime cooking and reading.
- DoublePower LED with frosted globe creates bright, non-glaring light; dual reflectors effectively capture and distribute light
- LED puts out 80 lumens on high and 10 lumens on low; illuminates an area approximately 45 ft. in diameter on high
- Fine-tune your lighting needs with the dimming switch—simply hold down the on/off button to activate dimmer
- Collapsible legs fold down and adjust to uneven terrain; legs fold up for compact transport
- Small LED lights indicate battery status; green indicates 50% - 99% battery life, yellow indicates less than 50% and red indicates less than 25%

My Brunton Glorb LED XB died suddenly and I stopped my local REI to pick up another or a BD Orbit. I happened to see the new Apollo next to the older Apollos which were on sale. I made an impulse purchase and picked up the new Apollo. I have used this lantern at our annual block party, car camping; and, backpacking. I really wasn't expecting to like the lantern but I do. It ran for hours on high at the block party, went camping a couple of times before I decided to change the batteries. It is bright and well-designed. I can see why folks complain about the on-off/dimmer switch and the power indicator LED's. Frankly, it's a great design, I don't need huge power indicators weighing down the lantern and it's great that the Apollo has them at all. This is a great lantern to use in a 3 - 4 person tent, on picnic tables, around a multi-person camp, etc. Nice one-two combo with a lantern like the Orbit for individual backpacking.

Product works great, is very durable, lightweight, and portable. I brought this about a year ago and use it constantly. I have used it for camping, when I'm not camping it stays in the cup holder of my truck. Gives off good light, batteries last a while(always use lithium). Stands up with the collapsible tri-pod legs, hangs anywhere with the clip on top. Overall good light, a little small like I said fits in a cup holder.

I was very excited when I got this lantern to replace my cumbersome older battery opperated lantern. I do believe that the light output is sufficient for 10x10 tent space. I was disappointed in the short run time my first time out camping so I tested it out as a night light and it still didn't last long. However that being said I did purchase another because of all the other great features...such as adjustable legs, awesome dimming feature. It also has a battery indicator which is not placed well as others have noted but if you know this than you will be mindful to turn on the lantern before fully extending it. It also has a great little hook on top that works well with the hanging loops at the entry of my tent. The two changes I would like to see is a longer battery run time, and change the position of the battery indicator- but despite what I'd like to change I use the light almost every night at work (poorly placed light switches).

I go camping using my motorcycle, so I don't have a lot of room for equipment. This product is compact enough to carry, yet provides a great amount of light when necessary. It can be placed on the floor of a tent or hung from the ceiling. The light level can be adjusted from high to low, which is essential for any tent light or camp lantern.

Have owned this product for several months. Just got back from a backpacking trip across Catalina Island where is poured rain Friday night and Saturday morning. We had to relocate our tent in the middle of the night due to flooding, and had to rely on this little lantern for light. I thought it was going to short out due to getting soaked in the rain, but it just kept going and ended up working for the rest of the weekend. It is now one week later and it still works fine. Besides providing light in the rain, we used to it light up our tent and to cook food by. It is not adequate to light up an entire campsite, but is a great lantern for backpackers looking for a small, light, dependable lantern. It casts the widest light when hung from something up high. I attached a small carabiner to the handle and it made it easy to hang on branches and other objects. The only negative is that the springs in the legs are not terrible strong. They are adequate for holding it up on a solid surface, but I found that after putting it on my head while walking the legs would sometimes fold up. Not a huge deal, but a little annoying.

This little lantern is awesome for a tent lantern or for smaller area lighting! It is a too low powered for lighting up a whole campground, but that is not what I bought it for nor what it is built for. I simply use it around the house, at night on the patio, hang it in the tent when camping or for emergencies. For those uses it is awesome and has a good run time. I really like this lantern as well as it fold up very compact and has easy one touch light adjustment and tells you when the battery is low. I am looking at buying another one as well to have. Highly recommended for the uses above.

We bought this to prepare for the inevitable winter/spring power outages. We had an outage that very night that lasted for several days! This made things SO much easier. It lit up the whole room enough to actually do things, a big improvement over candles and flashlights. Bright, fully adjustable, easy to use and store.... it's even cute! It will be great for camping. LOVE it!

Based on my personal experience: Delightful in a small tent. The dimmer alone takes the sting out of the price. The output and quality of light is unexpectedly good--fine for reading. The built in hooks for hanging suspended it perfectly and securely from my tent's interior loops. In my campsite, it's small footprint but long legs paid great dividends on the picnic table or wherever else I needed it, like the men's restroom. Versatile and compact, this lantern delivers the amount of light you want wherever you want it. Such is my appreciation for this marvel that I am now looking for a padded ditty bag to store it in. It deserves to be pampered. It is probably too large and heavy for backpacking, but the "Orbit" model is made for that. Were I going backpacking, I wouldn't hesitate to get one.

Although a little more than I wanted to spend, I bought it anyway. It's been worth the money since day one. I have taken it on several trips now and have not had any issues including what seems like an extraordinarily long battery battery life. I've used it as a night light for our youngest camper and its perfect. All its features are nice and true to description.
