Comments about The North Face Valdez Short Winter Boots - Women's:
I have no complaints, does all I hoped it would, just had deep snow a bit longer than I wanted (late April). Previous boots rubbed on my bindings and these are just fine.

Comments about The North Face Valdez Short Winter Boots - Women's:
I was looking for a good winter boot to go snow shoeing in, shovel my driveway, and that could hold up to almost anything. They had to be rated at -20+ degree weather, be waterproof, comfortable and be black.
This was the 4th pair of boots that I purchased. I bought Columbia and Merrels - They were either too soft, not the right color, didn't lace tight enough etc.
This boot was exactly what I was looking for.

Comments about The North Face Valdez Short Winter Boots - Women's:
I am taking the WBC class and needed to have a pair of boots for snow camp. With having a strict budget, I needed to find something that I could get away with using as a 3 season boot. I have to admit that the look of these boots is what got my attention at first. I just like the look of them. Then the next was the fact that they are rated up to -25º degrees and then of course the price. At the time when I purchased them, they were 50% off as well. So I bought them. I wore them to my Mountain Backpack trip, which turned out to be in the high desert. So it was warm, around 80º during the day. We scrambled over boulders and through a stream. My feet never got over heated and they never got wet with walking through the water. The first time I put the boots on, it was like walking on a cloud. Even while out on the backpack with my 40lbs pack on they were still like walking on clouds. I was very pleased with the boots after my trip. I wore them for a few days in a row and did a day hike in them before my trip and never had any problems with them. This weekend is our snow camp trip, after this weekend I will update this review to let you all know how they did.
Now the only other test will be time....Will they hold up over time like the leather boots do? Only time will tell :)

I bought these shoes before I left for Ukraine and before the winter weather hit Ukraine. I am so happy that I got these boots. Because of these boots both myself and my feet have survived the very long very cold Ukrainian winter.

Comments about The North Face Valdez Short Winter Boots - Women's:
This is a great winter boot...very comfortable, light weight good traction... great for my outdoor winter class, however after a few hours my feet get cold even with 2 pairs of my ski socks... Otherwise I really enjoy this product and I would buy again expecially if the boot can warm my feet better.
Thank you :-)

Comments about The North Face Valdez Short Winter Boots - Women's:
As a disclaimer, I haven't tried this "on the trail" yet because I'm not sure I am going to keep them. I am really torn about these boots. There are some really nice features:
Comfortable
Easy lace-up (but still laces tight)
Warm
Attractive
Lightweight
Not bulky
But there are some definite drawbacks. Some things I've noticed:
The other reviewers are pretty spot-on about the uppers being stiff and either uncomfortable or painful. I'm hoping this is a break-in issue for the time being, but I definitely noticed the "digging" problem as I walked around the house in them. It's not sharp, but I can see how it would bruise if you wore them all day.
Another thing I noticed that I didn't see mentioned was the lack of arch support in these boots. I was planning on using these for winter hiking and snowshoeing. I'm pretty flat-footed and don't normally need a lot of arch support, so if I'm noticing the lack of support, there is something to be wanted. Hopefully this can be remedied by an orthotic arch support insert without disturbing the positive aspects of how the boot fits.
A word of warning to people with narrow feet - I have wide feet and find these quite comfortable width-wise. They're probably not a good fit for narrow footed people.
The sole of the boot is very inflexible too. This takes away some of the natural bend the foot gives while walking, which is a little annoying, and reminiscent of a ski boot. In walking around in it for a while, I did get used to this, though.
I'm thinking about taking them back in to REI to see if someone there can talk to me to see if an insert is a viable option or if the stiffness is desirable in the boot, despite the discomfort. If I can find a good arch support insert, then I will probably keep these. The boots seem to be of good quality and worth investigating. Otherwise, I am sure there are other good, "waterproof" winter boots out there.

Comments about The North Face Valdez Short Winter Boots - Women's:
This was the best investment I made. I work out doors and needed something that was lightweight, flexible, warm, waterproof, comfortable, with good support and traction and I found all of this in these boots. I researched many other brands and types of boots and finally decided on these and I am very happy with them. They also look good with winter gear and casual attire too. Best boot that I've owned thus far.

Bought these boots for snowshoeing. Found them to be uncomfortable around my leg at first. Needed to wear them several times to break them in. Got better with time.

Used this to go snowshoeing, and hiking (5mi moderate incline). Very warm, very comfortable, and didn't require breaking-in. And they make my feet look small :P

Comments about The North Face Valdez Short Winter Boots - Women's:
These boots felt fantastic in the store, but there's nothing like real life to bring out the flaws you did not feel upon purchase. The top of the boots are stiff, and as they are not made of leather, they are actually less flexible and harder to break in.
So when I found that the top of the boot continued to jab my legs just above the ankles as I hiked in them through the snowy woods, you can imagine my frustration. By the time I was done there were bruises on my legs.
I am 5'2" tall and I cannot say if a taller person would have fared better in these, or even just someone with a different stride. All I know is I'm afraid to put them on again. I may try to shove a large object in to stretch these out, but since they are not made of leather but rather a very stiff synthetic, I do not expect much improvement. They were supposedly designed for ankle support and I think in this case the sturdiness of the top of the boot is going to work against me.
The boots are also not long enough at the top to be able to tuck pants in and keep them in place, so that would not serve as leg protection.
Additionally I am sick of finding boots and sneakers with the same poly laces. They never seem to stay tied even if you triple knot them! The laces do not grip together well.
It's such a shame because otherwise, these are warm, dry boots with great traction. But even thick wool socks are no match for the tough boot top that digs into my legs.
