Comments about Old Town Dirigo XT Tandem Plus Kayak:
We purchased this Kayak almost 2 years ago and we love it. So does our dog! He was the whole reason we got this particular tandem kayak...so he could come with us. He's a good size dog (50lbs) and fits comfortably in the back cockpit once the child booster seat is removed. With the booster seat in, you can actually fit a small person...not just a child...so it's pretty versatile...although this isn't the most comfortable scenario...but for short distances it works.
We have used it mainly on calm to light chop waters...lakes, creeks, and inter-coastal waterways. It is comfortable and is easy to paddle...after a long paddle our butts tend to get sore, but that's probably just from sitting for so long. We have yet to try it on a river with any sort of rapids, so I can't really comment on that yet. I'm not sure it was intended for much of that anyway but we'll see.
I wouldn't say this is a light kayak but for it's size it's not too bad. It can be managed single handed, but is a bit difficult if you don't have a whole lot of upper body strength. I can get it on the car with some creative maneuvering, and carry it short distances on my own but haven't really tried getting it down by myself. However with two people it's so much easier and faster. It requires clear communication and coordination...but hopefully you already have that with the person you plan on kayaking with...otherwise you'll have bigger problems than the weight of the kayak.
This leads me to my one criticism of the boat. You DO NEED the RUDDER! It should be sold with it! We got the boat and decided against the rudder at the time, thinking we could manage, and to save money...but without the rudder the boat does not track well at all, especially with three people in it. So a few exhausting attempts to go sans rudder and several arguments later we bought the rudder. The funny thing is that everyone warned us not to get a tandem kayak...to get individual ones...that "a tandem kayak would ruin your marriage"...what they should have said was "a tandem kayak with NO RUDDER will ruin your marriage." Since we installed the rudder it has been nothing but happy paddles. So I highly recommend getting the rudder. It bumps the price up about quite a bit and you have to install it yourself which will require some patience...unless you get one pre-installed from a return...but that wasn't an option when we bought ours.
Overall we love this kayak! It was the right fit for us and our pooch!
