for less than a penny they could have put small stainless steel washers on the screws that hold the strap used to support the backrest. The nylon strap pulled off first one side then the other. It is such a simple fix they should be embarrassed to miss this. One wonders if they ever used the boats. It is what it is I needed a short boat so I could store it, it works fine, I get regular exercise with it, dont intend to white water or go on long trips. It works just fine. But it is such a small thing, you wonder if their designersengineers ever use their boats.

The Emotion comet is the perfect personal watercraft. With a high weight load it can be used for a variety of activities. the short length allows it to move freely thru tight passages such as those on the lower colorado river. Close to shore paddeling, lake, canal,and generaly placid water will yeild the greatest satisfaction for Comet owners. The Comet comes with a float bag, please use it. My first kayak was a sit on top that would float when it rolled.

The "award winner" review that says it tracks like a 12-16 footer was stretching the truth a little. The front of the cockpit is almost V shaped making entry difficult w/o stepping on the seat. I added a seat pad after using it twice. I've tried 5 or 6 other kayaks, mostly more expensive and longer, and this one tracks worse than any I've tried. I bought 2 of these and they're fine for paddling around locally on flat water but don't expect to keep up with anybody that has a kayak that can track. If I could do it over, I would have bought something else.

I purchased this kayak for recreational use (lakes and large ponds). For the price, one cannot go wrong. The kayak does not have a lot of speed and the tracking is okay but be prepared to paddle, paddle, paddle! As mentioned in a previous review, please use the flotation device (bag). This kayak will sink without it. Overall, this kayak is a great buy for the casual user.

First thing to say, is that it is not a matter of "if" the seat strap is going to break, it is a matter of "when". For me it was the second trip. As another review said, instead of getting stranded mid trip without a seat back, GET TWO THICK RINGED 1/4 INCH WASHERS TO PUT BETWEEN THE STRAPS AND THE NUTS BEFORE YOU USE THIS KAYAK. 20 cents from the hardware store will save you lots of grief.

Besides that this kayak gets the job done. Miraculously it fits inside my Scion Xa (don't have a topper). I have a hard time keeping this straight, but perhaps that is my poor paddling form. I use this on a very calm lake.

This kayak is awesome. It does in fact track and run out like a longer boat. You should have it outfitted for you so you fit properly into the kayak and get the most out of its abilities - just like with any other kayak.

Have a professional shop outfit it and you will be amazed at its ease of handling and true tracking. It is currently my third kayak and go-to boat for quick lake runs. I recommend getting a spray skirt to keep unwanted water out. If you only use it on flat lakes you may not need one but they are almost mandatory for kayaking to make you as secure as you can be.

I bought this a few months ago, never having been in a kayak before, so I have nothing to compare it to. My requirements were that it should fit in the back of my Chevy Tahoe and I should be able to load, unload, and generally manage it by myself. I made the modification to the seat webbing suggested by other reviewers, and have had no problems. I bought a good lightweight paddle [...]So far I've only been out paddling on local lakes and reservoirs with calm water and small waves, but I feel safe and stable. I'm not hardcore - my trips are usually for about an hour and I'm more interested in the scenery than covering huge distances. I'm enjoying my new summer sport immensely, though, so I'm very glad I bought this kayak.

The boat would shank to the right every time I stopped paddling. No tracking whatsoever. No glide to it at all. Seat strap that another reviewer mentioned breaking on the first day out happend to me as well, on my first day out. By the way, buy an Airhead paddle on [...]for 17 bucks- can't beat it. Boat got the job done.If I did not have kids comming up I would have take it back to REI. In a few years they can learn with it.But really, how can I complain about the Kayak I bought ? My life is an embarassment of riches. I get to commune with nature, on a regular basis, with all the trinkets mass marketing tells me I need.
