by PIC (paddler-in-commander)fromProud new paddler!I'm a new owner and I researched many Yaks before making up my mind. This yak met all my needs and expectaions! Easy to load & board, handles with ease, super stable, awesome seat. I fish more than just cruise, so I added some assessories for that purpose including soft flooring to squelch noise. Yak transports easily on top of my SUV. I could go on & on but suffice to say, "it's great!"

by Captain DavefromWow its comfortable and roomyI love my Commander, even though it was my second choice, first choice wouldn't fit in garage. I had an Old Town sit in, great but caused many cramps and back aches. This kayak does not restrict seating positions and has 2 seats, top one needs back rest. It is great all around kayak just real slow and does not take rough water very well, just like a canoe, it can take on water. Great as a hauling kayak for gear. wish REI had the accesories for it.

by Tony REIfromGreat Hybrid KayakI mainly use this kayak for fishing rivers and inland lakes. I really love how comfortable the seating is in this boat along with the stability it provides. Really nice room to stretch my legs and to store lots of equipment in the back. I would buy this kayak again and I would recommend it to friends.

by GloriderfromA very stable canoeDid a lot of research for a kayak that was versatile and fairly light. What I was looking for was a kayak that had much maneuverability and was stable enough for me stand while I paddle (like a paddleboard)or fished. This is my third kayak and so far the best for those two purposes. If you fish, you will be able to sight fish standing, and pole or paddle to where you think fish are. Touring with this is solid was well. I was pleasantly surprised with its agility and quickness. One of the nicest features is the captain's chair above the removable seat which easily allows my 4 year old to sit in front of me when I paddle sitting above him. I purchase the angler addition which is a little more money but has a number of factory installed features such as flush rod mounts, a motor mount (not compatible with the rudder kit) and an anchor system (anchor) not included. An amazing 400 lbs load capacity makes it hard to reach the limit of this superb kayak.

by EdenburnzfromAmazing kayakI've kayaked/canoed for over 20 years and have owned/used approx 15 kayaks in that time. This by FAR is the best kayak I've had.
Seat is super comfy and the ability to remove the seat and/or slide it under the captains seat is great! No need for a camp chair. REI's personal cooler fits perfectly (on its back. Use ice packs not ice) under the captains seat. The mesh side pockets can be accessed very easily from the sit in seat without moving the seat.. Hope that makes sense lol.
Slidetrax system allows for almost unlimited setups and accessories, best part is if you don't like placement you can relocate items over and over on the trax!
You can stand very easily in this boat, moving to a standing position feels natural. Unlike a normal kayak the Commander has a dual pontoon style hull which makes it ridiculously stable, you have to really try to fall out/flip this thing! I'll cover that in a bit :)
For kayak camping there isn't a better option out there. If loaded properly you can fit as much if not more gear than you can in a one man 12ft canoe! My wife and I can fit everything we take with us to car camp (4-5 days worth, minus air mattress) in my Commander and her older WS Pamlico 120 with plenty of leg room left over.
Those people concerned/complaining about water from wakes/waves getting in should check out the bow and stern storage bags Wilderness makes for this boat. Don't know if REI offers them, but they keep the water out very well and offers even more storage!
I only have one concern with this kayak.. Thats the lack of a proper bulkhead/not enough bulkhead foam. I intentionally swap all of my kayaks when I first get them to see how they will react in a "worse case scenario". For my Commander I took it out to an island on the Mississippi, loaded it with 50-70lbs of driftwood and pushed the stern underwater until it completly filled up.. Sank like a rock. Thankfully it was in about 4 feet of water and I had it tied to a tree. I also flipped it a couple times that day to see how it'd react and it did MUCH better with that, only filling about a 1/4 of the way and was very easy to renter. The likelihood of finding your kayak entirely filled up is very small but a concern none the less, there are many options out there to fix this.
If your on the fence between this kayak and other comparable kayaks get the Commander!! Hands down best fishing/camping kayak there is. And WS quality per dollar ratio is better than any other brand out there, trust me I've owned kayaks from almost all the major brands.
Sorry so lengthy but can say enough about this kayak, could go on and on. Hope this review helps
