Comments about REI Tech Beast Rolling Duffel - 22":
This is a great bag that is fantastic for 3-7 days as a carry-on. It has enough structure that it will protect expensive toys (cameras, snorkel gear, electronics) pockets to seperate out documents and smelly shoes, and a magazine slot on the back. It has large wheels, so it rolls easily over cobblestones, and sidewalks that are in rough shape. The handle extends so it is easier to pull and the handles make it very easy to heft into overhead bins and car trunks. the bag is robust, and does not have any dangly straps or other bits that could get caught, rounded edges to ease packing and is really well thought out. It is a very good deal at list price, and it is a steal if you can get it when there is a sale (like the annual coupon or dividend)

I'm an A List flyer with Southwest and bought it to replace another carry on piece. The top of the tech beast is narrower than the bottom more than the picture shows. The 22" length does not fit in some plane's overhead bins on some of the first few rows due to the configuration of the plane changing from the main fuselage to the nose causing shallower bins. I like the simple features it has, but the same cubic inch capacity could have been attained at 20" or 21" if it would have a rectangular shape instead of a trapezoidal shape.

I bought this for a month long trip through the UK as my ONLY piece of luggage in addition to a day pack. I love it so much, I'm going to buy another for my husband. Excellent construction and materials. Rollers work nice and the retractable handle easy to use. I was able to fit it in the airline overhead compartments easily. Also fit easily under the seats on the train. I'm a seasoned international traveler and this little gem of a carry-on is my new favorite piece of equipment.

Comments about REI Tech Beast Rolling Duffel - 22":
I've been looking for the "perfect" carry-on bag for a few years now, as my aging and beloved American Tourister bag was nearing it's end. Some are too big to fit in oversize bins easily, many are too small (with wheels/handles eating up valuable interior space). Most are too heavy, given airlines' current focus on baggage weight. I wanted a light, rugged carry-n with good build quality, good wheels, and good organization.
I looked seriously at the TravelPro line, which many consider to be the gold standard of carry-on bags (most flight crews use them). But then I saw the REI Tech Beast and immediately realized it met all my criteria, and was affordable, too! Even at full price it's a good value, but on sale or with member coupon it's a steal.
The Good:
-Excellent build quality and design.
-Space is used very effectively
-Dimensions fit airline regulations perfectly
-Fit's into most overhead bins "head-in," rather than sideways, freeing up valuable space
-Sturdy zippers
-Very lightweight, yet durable
-Easy-rolling wheels
-Well-designed handle
To improve:
-My only real complaint is that there should be an expansion panel/zipper to allow the bag to hold more gear/clothes when you get to your destination. On a recent 4-week Europe trip I would have really liked this feature.
My wife and I each own one of these, and have been very happy with them as you can tell. I don't think you'll go wrong with purchasing it. We have the matching larger TechBeast, too, which is also a great product.

I HAVE USED THIS FOR AIR LINE TRAVEL AND OVER THE ROAD. I WAS AMAZED HOW MUCH IT WOULD HOLD, MY FIRST TRIP WAS 5 DAYS, BY AIR AND I HAD MORE THAN ENOUGH ROOM - EVEN FOR GRANDKIDS GIFTS. I WOULD ALSO USE THIS FOR A WEEK TRIP. VERY STURDY AND NOT TOO HEAVY FOR THE OVERHEAD BINS.
I WANTED TO BUY A 22" BAG TO MATCH MY OTHER LUGGAGE BUT IT WAS NO LONGER OFFERED, SAW THIS IN A STORE AND ORDERED IT WITH DISCOUNT AND DIVIDEND. WONDERFUL DEAL. MY HUSBAND IS NOW GOING TO BUY ONE TOO, HE LOVED IT.

Just picked this up at the local REI store, but have not yet used it. It appears to be of excellent quality, but I'm a bit concerned that it is slightly larger than the legal 22" x 14" x 9" maximum size for airline carryon. Not loaded I measure 23.5" x 14.5" x 9.5"; and I'm afraid that a strict airline attendant might require checking it in. I really don't want to have to find that out at the gate, so I may have to do a little more looking before I use and decide to return it.

I purchased 2 of these for my sons (ages 9 and 11). Their carry-on size suitcases were getting too small for trips over a week long. I bought these in the store[...]this duffle is a lot bigger than it looks! My boys' clothes don't fill it up - even for an 11-day trip to Europe! But, I know they'll grow into it and be able to use it in high school and college. There are 2 long internal zippered compartments, and 2 external. One of the external compartments can be unzipped on the inside to add depth - great for dirty shoes, etc. There are 3 straps on the inside to hold your clothes in, and 3 on the outside to add security and compression after the bag is zipped. There are lots of handles for carrying this duffle in a variety of ways, plus a nice pull-up handle that you can use to roll the bag. My boys had no problem rolling this around.

Used this bag for a 8 day trip to Costa Rica recently and it was excellent. Fits perfectly in the overhead bins and holds just enough so you don't overload it and have to pay an extra charge for weight on smaller airlines. Great pocket locations and held up well to the abuse of overseas travel. When you compare the cost of this bag to other name brands, I think it is a bargain. I'm keeping it.

I'll echo what others have said--this is a great bag! Well-made and thoughtfully designed. I used this on a recent week long trip to Florida and I was delighted at how well it worked. It's a bit taller and slimmer than other carryons, but it fit perfectly in the overhead bin. The slightly tapered shape means that it tucks in quickly and is easy to retrieve. There are several grab handles on the outside but they are low-profile so they don't snag.
Small details make this bag a welcome travel companion. There's a molded plastic cuplike handle on the bottom so you can quickly grab it out of the overhead bin. There are three outside compartments: one top-front, for your TSA-checkpoint fluid ziplock bag; one lower-front for your shoes or dirty laundry; and one lower-back for a magazine.
The zippers are beefy and inspired confidence. The inside contains two small zip mesh pockets and two compression straps. The bag hold a surprising amount of clothing, especially if you roll rather than fold your clothes.
Because this bag is so trim and well-made, you won't get the stink-eye from your fellow travelers when you carry it on the plane ;-) Happy trails!
