Comments about Salomon XA Comp 4 GTX Trail-Running Shoes - Women's:
Excellent shoe; comfortable right out of the box and onto the trails.
After my first long day hike, I replaced the insole with Green Superfeet (because I have high arches), but I have to do with with all my shoes, so it's my feet rather than the shoe.
I use for Sierra day-hikes (which can be dry/dusty or wet/sticky), and the shoes excel in all terrains. They really are waterproof (a wave went over my foot this summer--foot stayed dry), and they're not too hot in the summer. Toebox offers plenty of room, and the side support straps keep my foot stable up and downhill.
With the shoes, I wear wigwam light hiking socks (w/out liners), and I have had no blisters or problems in miles of hiking.
I bought originally for a trip to Costa Rica during the rainy season (where the shoes performed admirably), and since then I've used them some for everyday but mostly for day hikes in the Bay area or Sierras. Great performance in all terrain. Good traction, good support, plenty of room for my feet without allowing them to move around too much.
I don't know how they work with longer backpacking trips when you might need additional ankle support. These shoes have ankle support that is higher than typical running shoes but lower than mid-hiking shoes. With my 8-10lb daypack and 5-15 mile day hikes, and with my weak(er) ankles, however, they've worked out great so far.
Lace system works great and holds the tightness without problems. I haven't had to stop to tighten at all.
Finally, the shoes look cool and garner frequent compliments and inquiries. I very much enjoy wearing them.
Highly recommended; I have narrow feet and high arches. If they don't support your arches enough, blame the insole (not the shoe). Change out your insole for Superfeet or Sole, and then try the shoe again. They'll likely work out great for you as they have for me.

Comments about Salomon XA Comp 4 GTX Trail-Running Shoes - Women's:
I live in a small mountain community and I really just wanted a shoe for hiking locally, walking up and down the mountains, and walking the dogs - but something I could wear around town (since we do not have typical streets/sidewalks here). I bought the waterproof ones for wet or slushy days. I have been nothing but extremely happy with this shoe - the fit, the performance and the comfort. I often walk on very rocky terrain and my feet never complain (and believe me, this is unusual for me)
I have a pretty narrow foot and usually wear a 6.5, although in a Vasque I wear a 7.0. In this shoe I definitely wear a 6.5 and did not have to put inserts in. The toe box is great - my toes never touch when walking downhill. I thought the quick-lace system might be an issue for my low arch/low instep feet, but instead I find they feel great ALL day without having to adjust the laces. I typically wear a merino wool light hiking sock with these shoes, as anything thinner my heel slips.
One thing I would say though is that I would NOT wear these in warm weather because of the waterproofing. My feet are very warm in these shoes and downright HOT if the thermometer bumps above 60F. The waterproofing is excellent!

Comments about Salomon XA Comp 4 GTX Trail-Running Shoes - Women's:
I purchased the Women's Salomon trail/running shoe based on the high recommendation of a friend, who swears by them. I thought, ok, let's see what they're all about, not wanting to get my hopes up. I was impressed from the first moment I slipped into them. I went ahead and bought one pair of Women's Salomon's which are of the breathable fabric for sunny days, and another in the gortex, for rainy weather. I actually look forward to putting them on. Nothing easier, as they don't have to be tied. You just pull the shoestrings to comfort position, and push down on the "slide," which neatly (and easily)tucks into a pocket. The arch support is heavenly, as I have a high arch. I have ample toe room, which is important when you're tender-toed. They're brilliantly lightweight, and I love wearing them walking the dog and running around town on errands. They're really great.

Comments about Salomon XA Comp 4 GTX Trail-Running Shoes - Women's:
I bought these shoes originally when I moved to Portland for everday wear and for hiking. I wanted something that was waterproof but was also breathable. These shoes did not let me down. I bought them 2 years ago. I've worn them around town, in snow and rain, hiked in them, snowshoed, ran on pavement, trails and also the beach. Nothings better than stepping in a puddle or having a wave crash on your foot and it remains dry. When I retired these shoes from running I started using them for work. I am a landscaper and work in wet conditions. These shoes keep my feet so dry, and still maintain their breathability. They also clean up great. If they get muddy you can literally hose them off while they are still on your feet. Mine look a little beat up these days but honestly they have held up amazingly considering what I have put them through. This is a shoe that every outdoor enthusiast should own.

I wear them hiking almost every day and love these shoes. Totally waterproof when trekking through tall wet grass and through puddles. Great stability and traction on steep slopes.

This is the only Gore-Tex shoe I find light and comfortable enough to run in. Great for running on snowy sidewalks and wide enough for extra balance.

Comments about Salomon XA Comp 4 GTX Trail-Running Shoes - Women's:
I got these shoes specifically for a 4.3 mile trail/lakeshore race this fall following the recommendations on this site. My super-lightweight summer mesh running shoes weren't going to cut it on leafy, rugged, steep hills or in the soft sand along Lake Michigan. However, I found myself somewhat disappointed with these shoes.
The lacing design is inelegant; I would've preferred the more-secure, less-hassle design of regular shoe laces. It took me about a week to figure out just how tight I need to make these shoes initially because I found myself having to constantly adjust them during my runs. I know now how they need to be when I first put them on, but I still have to tighten them at least once even if I'm just walking around the grocery store. Plus, the bulk of the laces and adjusting mechanism tucked into the pouch of the tongue makes it look a bit ridiculous. My running pants also won't stay covering the tongues because of their bulk.
The insoles are fairly comfortable, but these shoes took a bit longer than most of my past running shoes to break in. I developed 4 blisters on that 4.3 mile run, and when I had to run along the beach, the shoes got soaked even before the water splashed up and saturated my socks. I had to run with water-logged, sandy shoes for about a mile. I'm not sure they're entirely waterproof -- maybe just highly water resistant and not meant to be used frequently in water. They took about a day to dry out. I had to remove them after the race and walk around with bare feet because of how uncomfortable and incredibly heavy they were.
The fold in the fabric under the tongue is uncomfortable at times. I usually have to "tie" and "re-tie" my shoes a couple times on each foot to make it so there won't be any chaffing there where it has a tendency to bunch up and rub. I use Body Glide on my feet when I plan on doing long runs to prevent blisters as much as possible.
When the snow comes this winter, I will certainly need to buy a pair of gaiters to make sure my feet stay dry.
The traction on these shoes is very good. That's definitely something that wasn't lacking, and they've been comfortable so far in 40+ degree weather. They are also very sporty and feminine-looking. Most other waterproof trail running shoes I looked at online weren't as cute as these, although that wasn't the major selling factor for me. The ability to actually try on these shoes in a store and not simply buy them online and hope for the best was why I ultimately chose them.
They have served me pretty well so far (despite the problems) and have become more comfortable near the front of the shoe (where my feet are the widest) as I continue to use them.
