Comments about Kelty Redwing 3100 Pack - '09:
I used an earlier version of this pack as my 48-96 hour bag while deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. I am deploying to Operation Enduring Freedom very soon a decided to pick up this 09 bag. I am very hard on my gear and have not been disappointed by the performance of these Kelty packs. When packed right I literally can live out of this thing. In my opinion, it is the perfect size to take on and off a helicopter and not have to wrestle with a HUGE bag when in my kit. Previous Kelty packs have served me very well and I am sure this one will as well.

I've got the 2008 version of this pack and I love it. I use it daily on my bike. Might seem a bit large for that, but I detached the waist strap and using the compression straps I can get this thing to be a good size. And when I need the room (like for grocery shopping), this thing gets BIG.
Also a great travel bag. Fully loaded, it just fits into an overhead bin on a 737 (lengthwise), and no problems on larger aircraft. Recently did a two week trip through europe and was able to carry everything on using this backpack.
Great stuff, will buy Kelty again, although the way this backpack is holding up so far, I might not have to...

...or a 6 monther. Took this pack on a two weeker to Yemen, Oman and the UAE. Perfect size and can be used as a carry on. Took the 08' version on a six monther through Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Ethiopia, Sudan, Cameroon, Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali & Senegal ...OK, I could have used a bit more space, and I was carrying two SLR's and lenses, but didn't want to give up portability for size. Bottom line was it was all I needed. Cameras, Lenses, Sleeping Bag, Tent, etc ...this is a great pack.
I was looking at the Gregory Z65 pack but for what I do there is one major design flaw in that pack - the front load zipper. If that breaks the pack is trash...(not to badmouth the pack - just pointing that out). I looked at alot of packs and I do have to say that this was the best designed, toughest, most indestructible pack I found. Believe me, I put it through it's paces ...a few months in the sahara, hiking the Bandiagara Escarpment, Pinasse down the Niger, getting thrown around by the military in Benin, Middle East, Arabian Peninsula... It can take it and it can hold everything with a little bit if thinking. Perfect size for planes, trains, donkey carts, hiking for days, camels and small (as well as large) boats.
If your looking for a pack with a thousand compression straps, places to put a snickers bar and a special pocket for your hand creams than this may not be the pack for you, but if you need a pack to comfortably carry your stuff and not break, tear or rip than this is it.

Basically I love this pack, i have a really old 1970's Kelty pack for going out for a few nights, however i needed something a little more new age for the shorter trips and something lighter, and less bulky...
This was the just the pack I needed lightweight none of that fake "storage" you know like for a tube of lotion or 1 toothbrush it was perfect. I have the 08' version of this pack and I've beat it up. I'm in the Navy and I use this pack not only for my day trips but for my everyday use of carrying my stuff to and from work..where it gets beaten up pretty bad. And like i expected nothing has broken at all even the zippers are still easy to open and easy to close..the perfect pack for everyone..

Bottom line is this: It's a great pack for long hikes or day hikes, overnight hikes etc, absolutely fantastic. Has plenty of pockets to organize stuff for your hikes.
If you don't pack it up then yes the bag seems kind of bulky. But at the same time, you don't buy a big back if you aren't going to pack it the way it was meant. If I don't need ALL of the packing space, then I take a smaller backpack, that just seems like the obvious thing to do. Don't just pack a sweater and some snacks, you don't need this bag for that. I pack shelter, several sets of clothes, food, survival gear, lighting, GPS etc etc. That's what it's meant for. Great deal, great company, I've had success with them before.

We registered for this pack for our wedding due to a recommendation from REI. So far we have had nothing but great luck with it. Padding is comfortable. During a trip to Mexico, it was used daily to hike the beach and take on excursions. 90 degree temps, kept very cool. Pack has been used for camping and day hikes so far with intentions of a 4 day backpakcing trip. Up to this point, the bag has been almost too big. It feels bulky when not fully loaded, but I know the bag will shine when packed to the gills. Overall, a nice bag, good hip straps, plenty of room for what it is and doesn't show any sign of wear after 1 season and a trip to Mexico.

I should start by saying that I am not a kid (45+), and I am a BIG guy (22" torso). I love this pack for day trips and have yet to get it jammed full. I use it for long day trips (10-14 miles) and short overnighters in the Adirondacks. It is comfortable and easy to adjust. I am an over packer and a 30lb day pack (lots of water) is usual for me. I recently got an 80 liter pack for longer trips but I love this pack for "quickies".

Great pack. You can fit a ton in here. Built very well. For me it's very comfortable. I'm glad they brought back the flow-thru side pockets on this 2009 update. This allows you to store long objects down behind the side pockets. As big as this 3100 cube pack is..it fits in an overhead on a plane as long as you don't really jam too much in it. I recommend it.

Comments about Kelty Redwing 3100 Pack - '09:
It's a pack, so it's job is pretty simple. It does it quite comfortably though. Easily the best in it's price range that I could actually try on at a store. I tried a dozen. I'll admit a couple others online appeared to rival it, but if I'm going to use something to strap 20-50 lbs to my back I want to put it on before I buy it. With little to no experience with packs I was amazed at the difference between one and the next. At every step this bag has been engineered intelligently. An extra handle means it can be carried horizontally. (Love this!) Compression straps, though not in abundance do their job well enough that I never felt anything moving around. Outer pockets were split up and designed well enough that all my smaller stuff had a place to go. The main pocket hasn't been filled with gimmicky storage that really just takes away from a large storage area. Everything feels really well made, tough, and durable.
The cons are few, pretty insignificant and mostly to be expected. It's not waterproof; a light rain and a rain/snow mix soaked through quickly when hung on (the dry side of) a tree. (I expected this, and possibly cured it with some Camp Dry.) There isn't a ton of room, so I've made a point to buy smaller versions of things. Lastly, and almost completely insignificant, is that it's pretty tough to get at a water bottle stuffed in the side pocket while wearing the pack. It's near impossible to put it back in. If it bothers you enough buy a bladder or snap your bottle to the bottom or your belt with a 'biner. Or do what I do: make a friend do it for you.
For any new adventurer (or like me, one that has finally decided to start carrying some equipment along) I'll highly recommend this pack. I hunt, hike, and canoe and this works great for all three. Don't expect to carry a weeks worth of food along with you though.

Comments about Kelty Redwing 3100 Pack - '09:
I use this pack as a backup/loaner for overnighters or extended mtn bike trips. It's great for the bike as it doesn't extend past your neck thus providing sufficient room for your helmet and head when riding.
The reason I chose this pack is that it is small enough for my wife to lug into the forest overnight and large enough to fit a small tent, sleeping pad, and bag. It would work perfectly for a minimalist as it is quite light and provides full range of motion for head and arms without hanging to low on the back.
There are two things which would have improved this bag. First the placement of the straps on the top front of the bag. Tieing these straps down is great however it makes it difficult to open the pack's main compartment. With that there aren't enough little pockets and there is no place to store keys which makes them easily accessible like my Coyote.
All in all this is a really good pack and I would recommend it if you are new to hiking and not carrying a ton of equipment.
