Comments about The North Face Rolling Thunder Duffel - 34'':
This behemoth gave me approximately 1400 cubic inches of stable, load bearing flexibility, and storage capacity during a three week trip to Alaska that included airline, automobile, and/or marine highway stops in Anchorage, Talkeetna, Fairbanks, Circle/Central, Barrow, Kodiak, Juneau, and aboard the M/V Columbia. I was able to pack climate specific gear, a firearm, and site appropriate equipment without experiencing any zipper, seam, strap, or wheel failure.
If there is a drawback to the duffle, it is that it can be overloaded, incurring excess baggage charges. But without fail this is the most durable, accessible, and convenient gear bag that I've ever used.
(I also got it on sale at REI, otherwise I might not have chosen it over other lesser priced bags.)
Notwithstanding, this is a genuine 'best value' product, particularly if you're going to be living out of your luggage in a somewhat remote location or on the road for an extended period and need to have your 'whatchamacallit' handy.

Comments about The North Face Rolling Thunder Duffel - 34'':
I travel a lot, most of it international. I do not go over one night's ice when selecting gear. I did a lot of research and this bag is simply the best. I own four of them, bought over 8 years. So, I have also been able to evaluate modifications made to this bag, and in fact owe three different versions of it. Often large bags have important shortcomings, whether it be the zippers or strength of the handles. This bag excels. Its zippers are heavy duty, so is its fabric, and it is extremely sturdy.
Is it perfect ? No, it has three weaknesses. The bag is heavy. Its empty weight is over 14 pounds. that is a problem with current air travel baggage restrictions. If you properly fill this bag, you'll be paying excess luggage mostly caused by the bag's own weight, and excess luggage fares are not cheap. Still, I recommend it for air travel. Baggage handlers are not particularly known for their car, and this bag can withstand falling on the tarmac. Most of the weight of the bag is caused by a thick and sturdy aluminum plate in its bottom. This is open to improvement, and should be replaced by lighter weight titanium.
The second downside of the bag is that it does not have a shoulder strap. The rationale is evidently that the bag is too heavy to carry on your shoulder, and that it has wheels. Unfortunately, that rationale is simplistic. It happens on a regular basis that an escalator at an airport is not functional because of maintenance, and I regularly find myself in train or subway stations that do not have escalators or elevators. Try carrying this bag on your hand or on its wheels up and down concrete stairs. I made my own strap which I bought at REI and attached at the handles at each side with double carabiners. That is how it should be done, and the manufacturers should consider this suggestion.
Third downside: its price. This is one expensive bag. Of course, the motto is, quality you pay, and that is true, no doubt, but suggesting that the bag is cheap or not expensive is simply untrue.
In conclusion, the bag is awesome. It is not perfect, but it still is the best one on the market.
