      The pants themselves are great. The little zipper pockets behind the main hip pockets are great for change, credit cards, ID, or other things you REALLY don't want falling out. The main hip pockets are plenty deep enough for folded maps or to keep things safe from falling out. They breathe well and are great for warm weather. Would have been five stars except that the belt is garbage. It loosens after just a few minutes of hiking, so you end up tightening it every 20 minutes lest your pants fall down. The little plastic buckle comes undone at the drop of a hat. Throw it away and substitute a proper leather belt and you're good to go.

      I took these pants on 2 multiday hikes and they are now ruined. The fabric stained badly and even washing with stain remover did not help at all. When hiking, you should be able to expect to sit down on rocks or walk in some mud without destroying your clothes. Obviously Columbia Sportswear should have chosen a better material. Fabric also pilled when washed, stains did not come out.
      I have used other hiking pants in the same conditions without these problems.
      Also, the belt did not hold at all. I had to tie the belt off to keep the pants from slipping down, even with a good waist fit.

        I used these pants/conversion shorts on a 7 mile hike in the GA heat. They were very light weight and breathable, yet durable. I wouldn't put things in the hip pockets, but you have plenty of cargo pockets at your disposal. They held up well, and I loved them.

            these are great pants! i wear them on light hikes, and backpacking! this last weekend, i was in lake powell, and since these dry fast i thought i wouldn't even bother taking a swimsuit, i took these!!! they did dry fast, didn't stink (even after swimming, and constantly wearing them for 3 days straight) wonderful product! although, i was mislead as to the thought that they were waterproof?
