Comments about Natural High Six-Grain Pancakes with Apples and Spice - 2 Servings:
I made these this weekend out in the desert in the dirt. Here are my notes on usage:
I poured half the pancake mix into a ziplock baggy and saved the other half in in the original packaging. Same went for the apple mix. It's easy enough to eye ball it so I was able to get two breakfasts for one person out of one pack.
With half the bag I got about three 4-inch pancakes worth - I started with a small one since I always end up donating the first one to the pancake gods - even at home. Assuming the first one doesn't burn, the package easily contains six "normal" sized pancakes, probably seven. The two I ended up eating myself were the perfect amount to fill me up. I'm not a huge breakfast eater, but at 6'5" and 240lbs I think I'm typical for most people's AM portions. Half a pack is a solid serving suggestion for almost anyone.
I poured cold water into the bag with the pancake mix and squished it around removing all powder clumps then let it sit. I then got some water boiling in my Jetboil and dumped the apple business in and stirred.
I used a non-stick skillet on the Jetboil in stove mode and set the burner to about as low as I could. Pancakes are definitely one at a time, but I just started eating them as they were ready and the timing was perfect. After ruining the first pancake, I decided to use a little bit of olive oil which seemed to help, but I think it's doable without oil so long as it's on a non-stick surface.
Primary thoughts:
It's a little time consuming, but I figured out the order of operations fairly quickly and things were up and running.
Lot's of accoutrements are needed so it's wise to prep everything before starting to cook. I used a large spoon to stir and serve the sauce alone (but could have gotten away with pouring it) plus a spatula to flip the pancakes. "The Utensils" by Guyot Designs (original larger size) were pretty much ideal for this. The Jetboil TI rocked as usual, but any stove and cooking cup will work for the apple sauce. A skillet is most definitely required for the pancakes of course; I used my MSR Blacklite w/ MSR Lite Lifter. I also brought along a tiny Nalgene container of oil, and a dedicated eating plate. Lastly, I made my coffee in a Glacier cup on the stove, but could have done the coffee in the Jetboil and the apple stuff in a plastic cup. Anyway, it's not an ultralight setup by any means, and a little planning is required but it's totally worth it on some trips, ie. relaxed ones.
Amazingly, there's was plenty of apple topping - enough for each pancake to be covered - I really expected it to be sparse.
These are really fantastic. The time it took to prepare and cook them made my outdoor experience really special, but if you're out with a group who races to get out of camp in the morning, I'm afraid these aren't for you.

Tasty, however I would only make them again if I had a full camp stove. We were making these on our backpacking stove in our fry pan, and while it worked just fine, it took forever (one pancake at a time) and used up a lot of precious fuel. Also, you'll need at least 3 dishes to make this one, so if you're trying to stay light (or avoid a load of dishes in bear country!), I'd save this one for car camping.

Tested this AT HOME for an upcoming backpack trip, and even with the conveniences of the thick teflon skillet the mix has so much sugar in it that it sticks. When I tried it on a thin coated TI pan it stuck badly. (Yes I was using oil in both cases) The apple mix is OK but it has that same apple flavor found in oatmeal mixes. I feel you are better off just taking regular instant pancake mix and if you want apples rehydrate a few dried apples

Just tried this mix for the first time and was amazed at how good it is!
The apple spice is not in the mix, it is in a separate packet. You add hot water to make a syrup with real apple chunks.
I'm here on the site today to order more.
It might be a little heavy for long distance backpackers, but seeing as how I am mostly a river runner these days the weight is not an issue.
