Comments about Gerber Sliding Saw:
I bought this saw as a general purpose saw for camping, and because it was light enough to bring backpacking. This design is nice, but the bolt that locks the saw blade (open or closed) is weak and poorly designed. Tighten it just a little too loose and it slides back in. I used it for ONE trip and after a couple of days of use the bolt could no longer keep the blade locked out - rendering the saw USELESS. It is too bad because I like the saw otherwise, the blade design makes it very efficient and it is comfortable and light.
The One-Star rating is harsh, I know. But when poor design is so bad that it renders the tool useless, it is hard to justify more than that.
Bottom Line - I WOULD NOT recommend this, ESPECIALLY for survival purposes. Buy either a folding saw or the Sven Saw.

Comments about Gerber Sliding Saw:
The saw blade bent, then snapped in half while sawing a branch that should have been of no consequence. I emailed Gerber, and they refused to assist or address the issue. I certainly will not be purchasing any of their products from this point.

Comments about Gerber Sliding Saw:
Needed a saw for firewood prep around camp while backpacking. At this price I wasn't expecting a whole lot. I was correct.
The concept and design are pretty good, and it is really lightweight. But the durability is poor. The blade constantly got lodged in the wood even with some oil on it. It lasted one trip and was unusable.
Not much force is needed to tweak the blade into unusable shape. I guess it would be better if you were really gentle with it. But hey, your ripping through logs there is nothing gentle about that.

Comments about Gerber Sliding Saw:
I brought this saw backpacking and on its first, the saw blade shattered into 3 pieces. It's a little heavy for backpacking. I would recommend finding a different saw to purchase.
Comments about Gerber Sliding Saw:
The locking mechanism worked great for me despite other reviews I just read. The main problem I experienced is that the blade is about 2 inches too short, I couldn't quite get my sawing rhythm down without banging the handle against the piece of wood all the time. Got about a year and a half out of it before it broke. I actually bought a $10 dollar saw at [...] made by camp usa that was much better and lasts longer.Bottomline: Get a little longer and thicker blade.

Comments about Gerber Sliding Saw:
This is a lightweight saw, and so its construction is also lightweight. That doesn't mean its not good, just understand what you are getting and compare that to your needs. Some complain that it cuts too slow, well, take a chainsaw in your pack next time, what to you expect from this little tool. If you treat it right it will last, don't be rough and expect to take this out logging for six months in Alaska. Its for when you need a little bit a wood for the fire. Worked and still works great for me.

Comments about Gerber Sliding Saw:
I liked the look of it and how compact and light it was. A fellow camper used it for the first time to gather some wood and it simply broke after a short tour of duty.

Comments about Gerber Sliding Saw:
I used this saw for over a year while camping and hiking and where it finally shows its' design flaw is the screw that locks it into the open or closed position: It finally wears out and is ineffective in keeping the blade in the open position. Otherwise it would have been okay. I would not depend on it for survival use.

Comments about Gerber Sliding Saw:
I put this saw in my cargo pocket and never go hiking with out it! Small and I like that the blade slides inside the handle and locks in both retracted and open positions. Combined with the Pack axe combo, and your cutting needs are met. Makes short work of wrist sized logs to manageable size, and even to make stakes, points on walking sticks,or tarp/tent poles

Comments about Gerber Sliding Saw:
Compact, lightweight, but failed the first time I used it. Blade is weak and easily warped while cutting small 1"-2" pieces of wood. Wish I had researched it more before purchasing.
