Comments about Mountain Hardwear Nut Shell High Gaiters:
The day after I bought these, I took a 20 mile hike that started at sea level and went to 4000'. The forest was wet at first, and turned to snow up above. At the summit, I was post-holing almost up to my knees. These gaiters were never a hinderence along the way - no overheating, no irritation, could hardly tell I had them on.
On the return, I came to a creek without bridge. It was probably 15' across and nearly a foot deep. Deep breath... DASH! On reaching the other bank, I was *amazed* that no water had gotten into my boots!
At the end of 20 extremely damp miles, my pant cuffs were also slighly damp. But boy do I ever believe these gaiters changed the outcome of that hike, avoiding the highly unpleasant prospect of coming out the last six miles with soaked footwear.
They could be easier to put on, if they had a sewn-in strap and buckle like most. But I think it's a Positive thing that they can be held in place with a simple field-replacable shoestring!

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Nut Shell High Gaiters:
Title says it all. These are simple basic gaiters that have performed well for me over the past couple years and you can't beat the price.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Nut Shell High Gaiters:
These aren't bad gaiters for [$], and definitely worth the cost. Unfortunely they do a poor job of staying in place and ride up the back of your heel. They're also excessively tight with the elastic cuff (could be because I have size 13 boots). I'm swapping these out for a pair of OR Crocodiles.

A little hot, not terribly waterproof. Wost of all: Crampons will quickly shred these suckers! If you're looking to do any serious mountaineering, upgrade to the OR Crocodiles

Overall these work pretty well.
I have very skinny legs so the are a tad baggy on me and tend to make my pants underneath push up a bit.
They would be a little too warm if used other than winter trekking.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Nut Shell High Gaiters:
I don't go in the backcountry without these. They are possibly my most prized piece of gear. They protect me more than anything else I own (accept my boots). I have never used them in the winter, so I can only speak about using them in the other seasons, but I have backpacked hundreds of miles with them and crossed dozens of streams (sometime unintentionally!) to depths well above my boot cuff and these gaiters have saved my BUTT! I also NEVER get my calves scraped by brush, nor ticks, nor rocks or sand in my boots, etc. While it is true that they don't breath well, I consider that a strenght because I want them to protect me from water getting in my boots, and also I have NEVER taken them off and felt as though my legs were hot or sweaty because of the gaiters. After my boots, these gaiters are the first piece of gear I put on each morning and the last piece I take off. I have thanked the trail gods (and Mountain Hardwear) EVERY single time I have taken them off at the end of the day. I highly recommend them.
P.S. while I have never worn through one of the elastic heal straps, I don't worry about it because the elastic cuff and metal lace hook will keep the gaiter securely in place. Also, the top elastic cuff is comfortable and has never bothered me and hase never caught on anything.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Nut Shell High Gaiters:
I used these for about a dozen winter hikes in the San Gabriel Mountains near LA, 90% of the time through snow cover, and am quite happy with them.
They fit very well over my fairly large high-top boots, and the laces hook generally finds its way to the proper spot without any effort and stays put. Despite new crampon user mishaps, the material hasn't torn or frayed, and the field-replaceable laces (main selling point for me, versus the straps and buckles on most other gaiters) are still in fine condition.
The only downside I've found with these gaiters is a lack of breathability. If you're wearing good waterproof pants it shouldn't be a noticeable problem, but the inside tends to get quite moist and sweaty if I don't take a break and open them up every once in a while. This is a minor gripe since it obviously keeps the price low, and none of that moisture came from snow even when post-holing all the way up Mt. Baldy!

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Nut Shell High Gaiters:
Some of the reviews say it doesnt breath well. But the question you should ask your self is do you want to be protected with these guys. I used these in colder wheather , with rain and snow on my back. I had to truck though some serious wet and cold wheather. When I came to this creek that I had no easy way across. Every rock I stepped on was slicker then snot , my feet kept plunging in the water way past my boot top. It seemed a good solid 6 or 7 times where the water went about 8 inches over the top of my boot. All I could think at the time was my boot is wet , I just dont feel it yet. But when I got out ..... my boot was dryer then a babies butt with baby pounder on it. I would say sacrifice the none breathable part for a good solid material that will keep you protected and take some abuse from the real world.

I wore them for the first time today. They seemed to work fine; however, since I've never used gaiters before, it would have been nice to have received some instructions for use with them. It seems pretty simple, but I'm not sure how to use the hook on the inside of the gaiters.

Bought these for my oldest son before we hiked to James Peak last weekend. Stayed in place and kept out the snow and water.
