Comments about Mountain Hardwear Ascent Stretch Air Permeable Gaiters:
09 Winter Cold and a Fair amount of Snow here in New England "I'm out doors every day".
Just bought this pair have about 25 miles of hiking through the trails and woods in the snow with them most with out snow shoes.
Keeps the snow out and you stay dry..
Didn't think I would like the Velcro, but I think its great easy on and off, stay's closed, no problem with moisture getting in. Hardly know you have them on. The rubber boot straps held up well even in the rocks, I'll see how long they last. but you can get replacements.
Another Great product from Mountain Hardware.
Comments about Mountain Hardwear Ascent Stretch Air Permeable Gaiters:
I would like to respond to a few comments above regarding the top strap. The top strap is set up as a double back system similar to a climbing harness. You need to double back the strap through the buckle in order for the strap to lock in place. Once you've adjusted the strap and top circumference to your leg size you no longer have to deal with adjustments. It's actually a really nice design and very different from other gaiters in this regard.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Ascent Stretch Air Permeable Gaiters:
I use gaiters for mountain rescue work - skree evacs, hikes, etc. in high alpine environments. This product would be great except for the top straps.
First, after one use, the strap end frayed, which did not allow me to put them in the buckle very easily.
Second, the sizing is based on foot size (not leg circumference). I'm slender and the top strap did not cinch up tight enough for them to stay up, so they kept falling down.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Ascent Stretch Air Permeable Gaiters:
I just wanted to respond to a few users that had some issues with the top strap. The top strap is a double back system similar to a climbing harness. You need to double back the strap through the ladder lock and it will lock in place. The great thing is once you adjust the strap and top opening to your leg circumference you won't have to mess with it again and you can tuck the end inside of the tunnel so that it's nice and clean and out of the way. This really is a nice design feature and no one else is making a top adjustment like this.

Worked very well. used with shorts without issue. stayed in place. no rubbing. Also found they worked well as a "boot bag" alternative. At night I wrapped my wet boots in them so I could bring them into the tent. I wanted to keep my boots from freezing!

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Ascent Stretch Air Permeable Gaiters:
This is a great product. My fiance and I climbed to the top of telescope peak in Death valley through 3 feet of snow in March and despite repeatedly landing in the snow up to my mid thigh I never got snow in my shoes thanks to the gators. I would buy these again and my fiance is now buying them as his didn't work out.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Ascent Stretch Air Permeable Gaiters:
Loved having gaiters for the first time on my last hike. Terrain was rocky, rooty, wet, and overgrown. Kept my ankles dry without getting hot. The only con is the sizing. My size 13 feet require me to get the extra large size, but the top strap won't tighten enough around my leg to hold them up. I will try to improvise though.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Ascent Stretch Air Permeable Gaiters:
Another response to the toe strap comments. Maybe I am confused, but there is not a "toe strap" on these gaiters. There is a strap that passes under the arch which is a very rugged urethane covered strap. There is a hook that attaches underneath your shoe lace at the front of the shoe. And finally there is a "strap" that adjusts the circumference around the upper calf just below the knee.
Also there is a burly velcro closure that extends down the front of the gaiter.
I have to disagree that the "calf strap" does not adjust small enough. It is in fact highly adjustable and as noted in another review, once adjusted, it stays in place - it really never loosens - it passes back like a harness. However, when your calves swell you are able to make fairly quick adjustments on the fly.
These are fairly water resistant and breathable due to the permeable back panel. I think they are extremely rugged - had my for 3 years and have put about 500 miles of trail/bushwhacking on them.
These provide really good footwear coverage also, come down real low at the heel and sides. NEVER have an issue with garbage gettin' in my shoes.
The only downside I see is that I broke an arch strap and I don't know if I can get a replacement. It broke because I was stupid - changed hiking footwear and didn't tighten up the strap - was bushwhacking and the strap got tangle on a piece of dead fall. Almost did a face plant (hehe)- lesson learned.
BUT, there was enough strap left that I could still use the gaiter just fine.
Really good gaiter. Oh BTW, the "short" ankle gaiter that MH has is garbage, don't waste your time with it.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Ascent Stretch Air Permeable Gaiters:
I bought these gaiters for a 2 week backpacking trip in Alaska (a NOLS trip). They fit great, are easy to get on and off, and definitely served their purpose. They saved my pants/boots from being completely wrecked through all the bushwhacking, even in the absolutely worst conditions. I didn't find them very breathable, as in when I wore them without pants on the warmer days, my legs would be drenched in sweat after a while. Also (and this is pretty minor considering all the wear and tear they took over 2 weeks) the hook in the front to attach to your laces came halfway off, and I'm not really sure how to repair that. I'll probably give it a go with some super glue. But I still would purchase these gaiters again - and will still be using them for years!

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Ascent Stretch Air Permeable Gaiters:
Bought these babies right after Christmas along with a pair of North Face winter hiking boots (the combo fits and works well together). I'm pretty tough on my gear and these guys held up on a 4-day trip up, down, and all over Mount Slide in Upstate NY. Trudging through waist deep snow a good deal of the time on the Eastern side of the Mountain and didn't experience any snow getting by these gaiters. Also put my foot through some ice crossing a creek at the base of the mountain and was saved from cold feet and iced boots in -20F weather.
Additionally, I've been wearing them for lighter winter hiking since in PA and have encountered no problems.
My only concern is how they would hold up to a prolonged dunking in water as far their 'water-resistance' goes.
No trouble with them sliding down or anything, but I think that has more to do with individual physiology than anything. All-in-all a great product
