Comments about Sawyer Permethrin Pump Spray - 24 oz.:
Permethrin is safe for humans and works great for treating clothing (not skin). It does have a nasty smell when wet, but once dry has no smell. I use this product to treat all my clothing/gear and find the product is dry in 15-20 minutes.
The magical thing about permethrin is 1) its durability to stay attached to clothing even after several washings and 2) how effective it is at keeping bugs away. Bugs fly onto my clothing and instantly fly away.
Permethrin should not be your only bug defense. Use this with a skin contact repellant and bugs should not be a bother.

Here's something you may not know- Sawyer used to sell a permethrin soak kit, that's pretty tough to track down these days. Something else you might not know- this spray solution is exactly the same stuff.
I got two of these spray bottles and soaked all of my gear for a two week trek in a five gallon bucket with an equal amount of water, and it seemed to do the trick. Even in the Peruvian Amazon I only got bitten where my skin was exposed.
The downside is the stuff stinks when being applied. Once it dries there's no smell at all, but when you hang up your stuff to dry out it reeks. I'm not convinced this stuff is entirely non-toxic, but just like DEET, it sure beats malaria or yellow fever.

Comments about Sawyer Permethrin Pump Spray - 24 oz.:
The ONE time I have been out in the backcountry without this, I walked off an hour-long trail with about 50 baby ticks on my pants. I use this product routinely on 3 sets of clothes that I use for hiking, backpacking, kayak-camping, and even yardwork. I retreat every now and then and don't get a SINGLE chigger, tick, fly bite, or mosquito swarm.
Everyone else around me who has NOT listened to me sing the praises of permethrin have been bugged. A lot. An example: I was on an escape and evasion course in the woods of central Florida a few months ago. The guys were picking ticks off their clothes and arms and necks and socks every time they sat down it seemed. We were belly-crawling through leaf-litter and vegetation that was 2 feet tall and I was eye-to-eye with tens of ticks and spiders. When we got off the course, I had NOTHING. Not a single one on me. The other folks were prying the nasty beasts off them for an hour.
I do not like to spray chemicals on my body, so all I use is this on every piece of clothing I take out, including bandanas and buffs. It's the absolute best. If I could give it more than five stars, I would.

Comments about Sawyer Permethrin Pump Spray - 24 oz.:
As others have mentioned, this can be messy to apply. The fumes are strong, so I'd recommend spraying outdoors in a well ventilated, non-windy location.
I have a pretty sensitive nose, but, after drying the clothing exhibited no detectable odor.
I applied permethrin to all the outer layers of clothing my wife and I took on a 17 day trip to Peru and Ecuador. I quickly realized that one 24 oz bottle would never treat all the clothing we were taking, so I purchased a 32 oz bottle of 13.3% permethrin concentrate and diluted it per the manufacturer's instructions.
While on our trip, which included a two day stay in the Amazon rain forest, neither of us was bothered by mosquitoes or other insects. (We also applied 98% DEET spray to our exposed skin).
It turned out that spraying our clothing had an additional, unforseen benefit. On the last night of our stay in the rain forest, when my wife was repacking her suitcase, she called me to look at what she had found under her clothing. There, on the bottom of her suitcase was the biggest cockroach I had ever seen (see attached photo). I took a picture of it and then realized that it was dead. Upon reflection, I decided that the roach was dispatched by the full load of permethrin coated clothing in her suitcase.
I plan to coat all my outerwear with permethrin before any future hiking, camping, or fishing trips. In addition, I will be spraying all my suitcases with permethrin to protect against insect hitchhikers, whether foreign or domestic, finding their way back home in my luggage.

I love to fish deep woods streams and ponds in the summer. I have 10 game trail cameras that I hike to check every week . Im an avid hunter . I find this easy to apply and it is the most effective tick repellent( killer) I have ever used . The aerosol cans of this product are effective but not odorless because of the aerosol. The spray bottle has solved that problem for my hunting clothes. Using the spray bottles are indeed odorless when it dries. While checking my game trail cameras in my hunting suit, and while out hunting , I love the idea that I am killing every tick that comes in contact with me LOL

worked well in mosquito heavy areas in panama.
added bonus was that when i applied the spray to my clothes before traveling, i'd put a sheet underneath to catch extra spray. so the sheet was not thoroughly covered. but then i took this sheet with me to panama. at night when lots of mosquitos, i'd just kindof flick the sheet around me for about 5 seconds and the mosquitos would be gone. WOW!

My friend and I have been on two hikes together. On both hikes, he did not use permethrin and I did. On each hike, he pulled over 50 ticks off while I did not have a single tick.
Pennsylvania is loaded with ticks and I wouldn't think about going into the woods without this sprayed on my pants.

Comments about Sawyer Permethrin Pump Spray - 24 oz.:
My husband and son used this Scout camping last year in WI. We had pre-treated clothing with Sawyer Permethrin Clothing Spray. The combination of good repellent with the clothing pre-treatment kept them from being eaten alive. Others campers had several bites and ticks, my guys only had one or two.
We decided to use same process for our Mexico vacation. We pretreated all clothing for Chichen Itza (located in a buggy jungle) and used a good strong insect repellent. We did get a couple of mosquito bites each BUT most others on our tour bus had received 12-20 bites a piece.
When I have used a repellent alone, I have gotten bitten thru my clothing. When we have worn clothing pretreated w/ Sawyer Permethrin spray and no repellent, our exposed skin gets bitten. So the combination is wonderful protection.
I am ordering a new bottle to pretreat my sons gear and clothing for another week at Boy Scout camp. I am going to also treat the clothing I wear when I take to the dog to the dog park at dusk.

Wife and I use this stuff on ALL our camp/travel gear as well as our sail cloth covers for our patio and the netting for our raised gardens. (Never comes in contact with the plants and keeps me form having to spray pesticide of any kind directly on the plants. It keeps the bugs away like nothing else and lasts a very long time. Mosquitoes wont come within 10' of us when were out packing and we have yet to find a single tick on us or our gear. There are a couple of negatives. It smells horrid when applied until dry and will kill your fish. This product does take some prep time but the long lasting results are superb and make it a must have in my book.

Comments about Sawyer Permethrin Pump Spray - 24 oz.:
I have used permethrin to treat clothing for travel in Asia and Central America and it has been 100% effective in avoiding mosquito bites when used with DEET or other repellent on the exposed areas. It is sold in 0.5%, 10%, 13%, and 37.5% permethrin strength solutions. You pay a lot more for the more diluted solutions versus making your own. A 16oz. 10% solution can bought for less than the cost the cost of the same amount of diluted pre-mix spray and used to make 10 quarts of solution. Then put the mix in a garden sprayer and saturate the clothing. It is good for a year so even if you do wash the clothes a lot it will still need to be re-applied every 12 months.
