Comments about Crank Brothers Mallet 1 Bike Pedals:
I was hoping to use these with my bike shoes on long rides across town or throw on some sandals or something and still have a nice platform with some grip. But the rotating spring mechanism sticks way up above the platform rolling you foot off the pedal contently. You won't get a sure grip making it a little annoying. I'll be looking at the Shimano M324 or M424

Comments about Crank Brothers Mallet 1 Bike Pedals:
When I switched to clipless pedals, I wanted something with a decent platform so I could wear regular shoes in a pinch. I don't worry much about weight, so these fit the bill pretty well. The cleat springs stick up a bit, so I wouldn't do a long ride with regular shoes, but it's not a big deal for me. I have no trouble getting in and out of these, and prefer them to the candy pedals on my commuting bike. For trail riding, I like the extra stability I have when I have to stand on my pedals over rough terrain, and they have held up very well to being slammed into rocks and other stuff along the trails. crankbrothers is good about fixing problems (I had a minor issue with spring mechanism), too.

Comments about Crank Brothers Mallet 1 Bike Pedals:
Crank brothers are my favorite brand of bike pedal. I prefer using egg beaters because it's more reliable for clipping out. I've never gotten stuck in my egg beaters, not when falling or flying over the handlebars, but in my mallets I get stuck all the time. The platform feels nice and I have had good stability the times I've forgotten my bike shoes and had to ride in my sneakers. But for more technical terrain, I would feel more comfortable in my egg beaters.

Comments about Crank Brothers Mallet 1 Bike Pedals:
When I first got my Road Bike they came Crank Brothers Candy Pedals. This was my first experience with clipless pedals so I got the Mallets to ease the transition between simple platforms and clipless pedals.
The Mallet's performed well and help a beginner learn to clip in & out safely.
A multipurpose pedal with buying...

Comments about Crank Brothers Mallet 1 Bike Pedals:
This is my very first clipless, but my dad and brother both have been using the Crank Brothers Candy for a while now. Same mechanism, different platform surrounding it. This pedal is heavier, about a pound for the pair, but since we don't race--it's just a recreational thing for us--it's not a problem. I was able to get accustomed to clipping in and unclipping before I even rode it, by simply practicing next to the bike. Clipping in is, compared to the Candy, minimally more difficult, but this could be because the Candies my family has are very worn and these are new. The pedals are nice and big underfoot, so even with my relatively flexy biking shoes I get much more efficiency out of the pedalstroke, and I can still ride around town in my sneakers without having to change pedals or shoes. Great for people like me who don't mind a few ounces for a bit of added durability and versatility. If, on the other hand, you're more of a racer, you watch your ounces, you already have a separate bike that you don't mind riding around town, et cetera... basically, if you're specialized more than generalized like I am, you'd be better off with the Egg Beaters or the Candy. In theory it could be better, but for the price? And also, they have higher-quality versions for those who want a big pedal, clipless potential, and a light weight. For a price...

Comments about Crank Brothers Mallet 1 Bike Pedals:
After taking a long hiatus from riding, I am back in the saddle and these pedals are a welcome surprise.
I came from the minimalist/lighter/faster/farther mind-set but I would have loved these pedals even on the race bike.
Long road to fire-road to low-tide beach hammers are my present rides and the Crank Bros Mallets are comfortable, efficient and easy to transition in and out of.
For the Sunday ride to the market a pair of Vans and off I go.
Nicely done!
Thank you,
Bill
