The lacing system on these shoes & the sturdy supportive feel are the best features for me. The uppers have held up extremely well & show little sign of wear.
However, the soles have worn out much too soon & I must replace these shoes. I am debating whether to get these again because of the soles.
If it wasn't for the poor quality of the soles I would give these a full 5 stars.
I would recomend these shoes to others, but with a warning of the poor quality soles.

What makes the shoe so good? A stiff shank provides excellent support for your midfoot (arch) but yet the forefoot has excellent flexibility allowing your toes to pivot easily as you walk. The low-cut is great for steep, prolonged descents – unlike a boot that can irritate your Achilles tendon. By the way, I use set of powerstep pinnacle inserts - the combination absolutely rocks!
I do have one complaint – when trail running on jagged rocks and roots the forefoot area needs to disperse the contact better. However, the heel and midfoot are perfect. Side note, I do weigh 215lbs so maybe I should lose some weight and that problem would go away – nah… fix the shoe.

These are my hiking shoes. I live in Washington state and hike all over the cascades with them, they work perfect. I'm picky about my shoes because I have a high arch and wide feet and these are cut perfect for me! I only wear them hiking so the soles are still in great shape after over a year with countless miles on them. I don't wear them on cement then cry that the tread is wearing out. I wear mine with the orange happy feet keeps my posture very straight. The Gore-Tex works great and the traction is good. I say give them a try I think you'll love them too.

I bought these on the recomendation of a friend and usually havent had alot of luck with TNF footwear but this shoe definitely did the job for me. The test, I was going on a 26 mile hike over Mt Mitchell, NC, and carried these along for a pair of camp shoes to break them in. I forgot to pack my normal trail shoe for the hike and was left with no choice but to wear these. I wasnt sure how I would fair and against other's judgement wore them. I didnt experience a single hot or sore spot the entire hike. I used a thin smartwool trail running sock and changed them every three hrs. We encountered rough terrain, mud and slick rocks, and personally havent had a single issue with them. In my opinion a great buy.

These shoes are amazing... There have been alot of reviews saying the tread doesnt last long. Well my freinds that is because this is a very aggresive and soft tread... and it's build for the trail not pavement! On the trail you want an aggressive and very soft sole... because together they give you amazing traction and grip... and this shoe has both!!!
They are hands down the best fitting shoes I have ever had they are probably the most comftorble as well... Although I usually have to order Extra Wide these fit like a charm with the Medium width which may be a problem or someone with narrow feet. But I think it has more to do with the option to lace them near the tounge or on the edge than it does with the actually design of the shoe...

I agree with the other reviews that the soles wear too quickly. I wore my pair daily for about 3 months, a few trail and road runs in there, and the soles started to wear off the bottom. I still wear them daily and it seems like the soles have stopped wearing off but still kind of annoying.
Other than that, I really like the shoes, great comfort (I replaced the stock insided liner with superfeet), and they look great. I just wish they did not wear as quickly.
I wouldn't recommend to buy due to the durability. If you have money burning your pockets, then by all means grab a pair.

The problem with these shoes lies in the sole / grip. The sole loses all traction on slippery surfaces and the grips on the bottom of the sole have come loose far too early. These two problems together make the shoe worthless on wet surfaces including slippery granite and even on rainy sidewalks!

I live in Oregon and walk my dog in the rain and mud twice a day. These shoes worked great for a while but recently they have started to ooze water from the under the insole. Since it happens in both shoes, it is not just a hole somewhere. Goretex shoes should not leak.

"Our 100% satisfaction guarantee ensures that every item you purchase at REI meets your high standards—or you can return it for a replacement or refund". Well.......This is my 2nd pair of these shoes, THEY WEAR QUICKY no joke!! They are suppost to be Gore Tex - wet feet after about a year. Oh well I tried to use the 45% satisfaction guarantee - CRICKETS.... For the amount of loot spent, I was hoping to get more then year out of them - but didnt. I would look at something elese - or another shop that truly has a "100% satisfaction guarantee" -
