Comments about Mad Rock Phoenix Rock Shoes:
Now, Mad Rock seems to get a bad rap. Here is the skinny on this shoe. I have been climbing for just under 4 years and these were my 4th pair of shoes, I currently own 14 pairs of different shoes. When I finally stepped into these shoes and gave them a try I was hooked. No matter what I do on longer Trad routes this is the shoe that I always go back to. You need to size them a bit on the smaller end. I wear a 10.5 street shoe and got them in size 10. They will stretch about a half size and that will leave them perfectly snug and secure. Now Mad Rocks rubber, in my opinion, is some of the stickiest out there. I have La Stortiva, Boreal, 5.10, Evolv and Mad Rock. That being said, Sticky means softer and softer translates into less durable/wears faster. That's a fact. Consequently, I DON'T recommend this shoe for a total beginner. As a beginner your footwork will suck and you will be flailing, scratching and clawing for any little foothold you can find and the rubber on this shoe will wear prematurely. This is a great shoe for the intermediate climber who has settled down on the rock and has learned some technique. I own the original Pheonix and I have re-soled these shoes 3 times. I have purchased the newer, upgraded version of the Pheonix and they are virtually identical in fit and function as the original version. Great shoe, Great price, But actually, NOT for the beginner in my opinion, unless your foot work is great from the start.

I don't know what those other guys are talkiing about. I have been climbing for 11 years and believe me, I have gone through a TON of shoes. These may not be very tough, but they perform well as an all around shoe. Really, they are the best shoe for your money. They perform well in wet condtions and will stick to anything. These are great shoes!

Comments about Mad Rock Phoenix Rock Shoes:
Great shoe for sport climbers. I have had these shoes for a few years now and the still give very reliable grip. They are good on the rock, but not comfortable to walk around in. As soon as I finish a run I pull them off. Can't beat the performance for the price.

Comments about Mad Rock Phoenix Rock Shoes:
These shoes take some time to break in. They are good shoes, but when you first start with them, the sole feels like a sneaker sole. These will take much longer than a week to break in. Actually, it will take something a long the lines of 3 weeks 2-3 times a week for 2 hours worth of climbing to break in. Afterward, the shoe grips about as good as any shoe. Though I do have to note, that it's not necessarily the best smearing shoe around.
The shoe itself is uncomfortable. I wore these with socks. I wore these without socks. Both of which does not help the fact that this shoe is uncomfortable. This shoe also does not breathe at all. When your feet get sweaty, it's not uncommon to hear a, "farting," sound when you step down again.
While the heel is very nice, it does not stick to your foot all that well. The heel will pop off occasionally.

Comments about Mad Rock Phoenix Rock Shoes:
Overall I'm quiet happy with these rock shoes. I have slightly wider then average feet, and the Phoenix's feel perfect. I went with them in my true size and they continue to feel great even after a month in them. They haven't stretched much if at all, but I don't tend to lace them super tight. If you've got wide feet I'd highly recommend giving them a shot.

Comments about Mad Rock Phoenix Rock Shoes:
I remember using these shoes. They were my first pair. I've had 10 different pairs of rock climbing shoes so far, but I promised myself I would stay away from Mad Rock shoes.
Are they really that bad? No, they're not, but there are other shoe companies that outperform Mad Rock shoes hands down. Yes, Mad Rock shoes are cheaper, but the lack of performance is unforgivable.
I've used both Mad Rubber and Science Friction rubber that Mad Rock offers, and I don't like them.
Other shoes companies have better rubbers.
I could argue that it doesn't matter what shoe you wear as long as you're a good climber, but don't make the sport harder than necessary. Look somewhere else.

Comments about Mad Rock Phoenix Rock Shoes:
These were great shoes. I would say get a half of a size bigger that your shoe size. It has great grip and you can get your toe in crevis's very easily. Great shoes, great value, very good if you are just getting started in climbing. They will feel skinny at first but that is how rock climbing shoes should feel. I totally recommend buying this.

Comments about Mad Rock Phoenix Rock Shoes:
For the price, this is one of the best shoes out there. It is a very affordable, very versatile shoe. It is an agressive shoe and therefor can be a little uncomfortable for beginners. The rubber is very sticky and durable. The toe is good for edging, and the heels have grooved rubber which makes them great for heel hooking. These shoes are best for sport climbing and mildly technical climbing.
Size wise, I would recommend going one full shoe size down from street shoes. I wear an 11.5 US mens shoe, and this shoe fits me best at 10.5 US. The only drawback to these shoes is that they can be a little uncomfortable - especially if you're a new climber. I wouldn't do any multi-pitch climbs with these shoes unless you bring some sandals to change into while belaying.
I hope this review helps you decide.

Comments about Mad Rock Phoenix Rock Shoes:
This shoe ripped on my second climbing day in them. I'm a beginner, and I certainly wasn't doing anything fancy, but I tore a four inch long hole in the side of the shoe in the course of a normal climb, right along the decorative stitching. Very disappointed. I did not own these shoes long enough to provide any other feedback.

Comments about Mad Rock Phoenix Rock Shoes:
I bought these shoes so they were tight but not too uncomfortable, I should have probably gone a bit smaller, but these shoes stretched out nearly a full size. I wore them climbing outside once and the rubber got very worn out. I've had them for MAYBE 3 months and I already need a new pair of shoes.
