Comments about Guyot Designs Firefly Bottle LED Lamp:
This is the type of item that I probably would not have bought myself (IMO a bit pricey, a bit too gadgety), but I LOVED getting it as a gift (it is thoughtful, a nice comfort item, memorable, useful). Hence, when my sister bought me one for my birthday, I was delighted!
In cold and lonely places of the world, I turn this water bottle lantern on, and I smile, remembering who gave it to me. I think this is the kind of thing for the outdoors person who has everything. A perfect gift, both warm and useful. Even if the person already has one, heck, you can always use another (i.e. I have 10 water bottles... LOL).
I think it works great (despite some of the other reviews). It's a good light for a tent, for inside a car, for a campsite marker, to play Risk by during a power outage, and to take a mellow, relaxing bath with. I used it once inside a Talus cave and it was a lot more "fun" than my headlamp.
I concur that it works best with the Outdoor Products 500ml frosted white Cyclone bottle, as it diffuses the light nicely and gives a warm even glow. I've tried the larger 1 litre Nalgene bottles, and various colours (purple, green), but the combination of the smaller size and the frosted finish seems to give the best output. I consider it an additional plus that it is SAFE (no worries about tipping over, ignition, carbon monoxide build-up, etc).
As someone already pointed out, I carry a water bottle with me anyway, so this product does not take up any extra space and nicely doubles my water bottle's usefulness as a lantern also.
I've not had problems with leakage or o-ring failure yet. Batteries seem to last a long time also as the LEDs just sip power. About the only thing I can say negative about this is that the batteries are not easily replaced (requires a small screwdriver).
A suggested quote for your gift tag:
"Behold the light of Elendil, our most beloved star. May it be a light for you in dark places, when all other lights go out." --Galadriel

I bought this and thought it was the coolest thing...until I took it camping and it died on me after I got water on the lid. I mean come on, it's a nalgene bottle you're putting this onto, its kind of hard not to get the lid wet! So it died on my first night of use after getting dunked in the lake I was camping at. I[...]they sent me a new one (not a waterproof one)to replace my old one...the new one works well, i just am pretty scared to use it camping or near any kind of water. Also its not great for everyday use because the lid is a bit bulky. All in all its a great concept, if it was waterproof I would give it 6 stars.

Comments about Guyot Designs Firefly Bottle LED Lamp:
My sole purpose for getting this gadget was to keep my little girl (3 yrs) from getting scared at night in the tent. It definitely works as a night light, but also has eased her mind of walking around the camp once it gets dark. I can always see where she's at, as she won't put it down. Granted, I have had to buy a couple more different colored bottles, but this thing passes with flying colors!
Not extremely bright, but does the job I intended it to do, which is why I gave it 5 stars!

Comments about Guyot Designs Firefly Bottle LED Lamp:
This thing is so close to perfect, it makes its faults all the more annoying.
First, the battery compartment is not waterproof. This is just a goofball design decision, and makes no sense whatsoever. You could seal it up yourself, but for the price they should have just slapped on a silicone or rubber gasket.
Second, the process to add/replace batteries requires a phillips-head screwdriver. And not just any screwdriver, but a tiny eyeglass-repair type. How often do you take one of those with you traveling or backpacking? It really should just be a snap-on lid.
Finally, if you want to remove it from one bottle and attach it to another, you need a similarly tiny allen wrench. Again, this makes no sense whatsoever. The cord attachments should either use the same screw type as the lid, or none at all (what's wrong with a sliding cord lock?).
Other than that, it's great. I spent an evening trying to find a compact alternative involving a clear plastic pill bottle, my LED flashlight, and a torn-up cotton ball to use as a "filament", but this was just perfect.
I mean... almost perfect.

Comments about Guyot Designs Firefly Bottle LED Lamp:
I was skeptical of the firefly after reading some of the reviews, but I am glad I bought it anyway. I've paired mine with the Nalgene wide-mouth 32 oz. bottle, and it emits a rather substantial light for its purpose. It wasn't designed to replace a flashlight. Come on. Who are these people? I could easily walk around camp on a pitch dark night. When nature called, I avoided tent stakes that used to destroy toes. If you need it even brighter, just take the lid off. This increases illumination and projects a nice circular light. It has a dimmer that goes from bright to low just by holding down the button and releasing when its where you want it. Why others found that difficult is beyond me. Truly great. I use it all of the time. I even used it to ride my bike tonight. Just don't use it with a dark bottle or you will be disappointed (unless you just want the bottle to look cool, then you are set).

I thought this would be a great purchase for my many weekend trips. It works very well and makes a great lantern. That being said it gets mold in it ten times faster than my normal nalgenes with regular lids on them. I've gotten sick from it more than a few times. I'm throwing it away!

a glow in the dark button would be nice for the on/off, but here’s an old “cop” coffee mug trick from a third shifter… With a knife notch out your “target area.” On the ol’ mug it’s side of the drinking hole....your tongue will find it. On the lantern it’d be the side closet to the button...your finger will find it. YOUR WELCOME!! :)
This lantern doesn’t give off boat loads of light, but it’s great for in-tent, especially if you have small children…great night light. GREAT FOR SCOUTS!! Also, the color the bottle will have HUGE impact on how much light it given off.

Comments about Guyot Designs Firefly Bottle LED Lamp:
The light output on this varies significantly with different bottle types. I find the frosted white cyclone bottle seems to be the best by far, and when used with that bottle type, it actually puts out great light. This probably isn't a must have, but it is a convenient and durable little lantern to have along. The best thing is that if you get stuck out, but you have your water bottle, you also have your lantern.
