Comments about REI Jungle Juice 100 Insect Repellent:
This is the most effective bug repellant i've ever used. The first time I used it was on a canoe trip with very thick mosquito populations and I had no problems. It was interesting to watch the mosquitos reaction after they got close to this stuff - they wanted nothing to do with it. Now I never leave home without this stuff. I have not figured out why the ladies don't like the smell of deet - i kind of like it...
Comments about REI Jungle Juice 100 Insect Repellent:
No doubt about it, this is some potent stuff and I found it certainly works for longer than some of the herbal/natural stuff. However, as the other reviewer wrote, be careful around plastics. This stuff melted the entire outer plastic off of my friend's pocket knife.

Comments about REI Jungle Juice 100 Insect Repellent:
I've tried lots of time release and other kinds of natural bug repellent and always come back to the Jungle Juice. It is super strong but becarefull of using this around plastics. It will even wear off some painted surfaces (like the paint on my fishing reel. A little goes a long way.

Comments about REI Jungle Juice 100 Insect Repellent:
I am tasty to mosquitos. People always claim that they get bit bad and I tell them I am more irresistible than they are, they dont believe me until I have the bite wounds to prove it. Having that been said, I NEED a good repellant.
Was camping in North Cascades at McAlester Lake and the place was riddled with relentless mosquitos. Picked up the Jungle Juice under the impression that the product would keep the demons at bay. It wasn't effective... at all. With heavy backpacking, lugging photography equipment, and climbing the CO2 from my sweat was tasty for the mosquitos.
Applied the Juice on my face and was bit on the forehead 5 times. Applied the Juice on my hands and arms but now my index finger and pinky are swollen with misery. The camp fire was the only thing that semi-worked. With heavy sweating from climbing mountains and backpacking gear the Juice would not last more than 5 minutes. This product is only good if you are going to a family barbecue and not moving... even than I wouldn't recommend the product.

Comments about REI Jungle Juice 100 Insect Repellent:
I use Jungle Juice every time I leave for a hike. I recently hiked Umstead Park in NC and I was surprised to find so many mosquitos this early in the season. Needless to say, I put this stuff on and nothing even came near me. Bugs (and there were a lot of bugs!!!) were literally doing u-turns to get away from me. It was actually quite hilarious.

This stuff is so potent that it melted the plastic of my backpack. And it caused a rash on my skin for a week. If it melts plastic, think about what it does to your skin....

Comments about REI Jungle Juice 100 Insect Repellent:
I used this product extensively while in the field at FT Benning, GA - anyone will tell you the bugs are horrible there - and this product kept them all at bay. In fact, I only suffered when I was too lazy to grab it from my ruck sack. It's a little hard on plastics but I keep it in a ziploc and the worst to happen was the label disolved on the ziploc - not too bad at all. It doesn't seem to sweat off and it isn't greasy either - you can wear it to bed and not feel clammy. Bottom line, if you want to stay bite free pick this stuff up.

Comments about REI Jungle Juice 100 Insect Repellent:
I used this product in conjunction with the 3M UltraThon Insect Repellent - 34.34% DEET because I wanted to be double protected!
Spent 6 days in an adventure camp in Fresno, CA. I could see the mosquitoes and insects flying and crawling about but I didn't get one single bite. I've tried other drugstore type products and have always gotten bitten. I like the compactness of the tube which was nice since it was easy to put into my fanny pack during my hike and other activities. I also purchase the REI 100% juice and applied a small amount of it on top of this product to be double sure to protect me. It worked!! I shared both products with my friends and no one got bit! :o)

Comments about REI Jungle Juice 100 Insect Repellent:
I've had mixed results so I don't feel comfortable recommending it.
I used this product in West African cities and beaches and only got bitten 8 times on a 34 day trip. BUT used it in April '09 in Singapore (ineffective) and again this week while at a resort on the Pacific side of Panama, Central America. I have 30+ bites from a 4 day trip!!! Panama has no-see-ums or sand flies, "chitras" as the locals call them, that are fast little mosquito-like suckers. The resort concierge said nothing is effective against them and they prefer to bite females. At the airport I read on the internet of a product in Costa Rica that works. If I find its name I'll post it here.
BTW - I wish REI would include gender information regarding the effectiveness of their repellent products. The Panamanian resort-supplied repellent "Defender" has only 20% DEET and worked fine for my husband but not at all for me.
I'm getting relief from hot baths - 16" water and 3 handfulls of Epsom salts. Then I slather on Benedryl anti-itch ointment AND take a half tablet of Benedryl Allergy antihistamine. Only then can I get some sleep! Next trip? Bangkok!!! Eeeeekkk! I hope I find an effective repellent before then!
