Comments about Chaco Z/1 Unaweep Sandals - Men's:

Since Chaco went to the new(er) Unaweep sole the quality of all of their sandals has gone out the door. I assume it's the new glue they started using. The glue fails after a couple months of average use. I have gone through two pairs and will not attempt third. Trendy=Sellout=Chaco=Joke. (Of coarse I am comparing this to the Terrano sole from back in the day= AMAZING!)

Comments about Chaco Z/1 Unaweep Sandals - Men's:

I tried these out for 6 months after hearing good things about them. Previously, I've owned Merrell and Teva sandals. Perhaps they were made for the anti-Jeff's feet, because I had a bad, bad, bad experience with these. Backpackers: these are very heavy sandals, and will add significant weight to your pack. I hiked 12 miles with these while traveling in Costa Rica, and the next day I thought my feet were going to die they were so sore. The soles are very stiff, and the foot bed is not supple. My arches were killing me. And then the straps started to bite in. If you've been around a campfire or traveling the tropics and see people with band-aids over their toes, dollars to donuts there's a pair of Chacos nearby that caused the damage. I'm heading back to the loving embrace of Tevas.

Comments about Chaco Z/1 Unaweep Sandals - Men's:

I have spent 21 years in the Army, all in the light Infantry to include the 82nd,101st and 75th. So I am no stranger to good/bad footwear while on the march. These things are the most stable foot wear I have ever owned. THe heel cup I think is the key. I have actually tried to see if I could twist my ankle in these things and the heel cup hold my foot and ankle tight. I backpack with 55 pound plus loads while wearing these things with no problem. Pros: stability with heavy loads,no blisters, great for stream crossings, long lasting (my 1st pair lasted 5 years with heavy use) Cons:a bit bulky, insoles are a bit rough on tenderfeet at first, occasional pebble between foot and insole, stubbing toe on sticks or rocks. Aside from the cons, I love these things. I would reccomend these to a freind.

Comments about Chaco Z/1 Unaweep Sandals - Men's:

All the people complaining about blisters bought these right before a big trip. Think of them like hiking boots in that you need to break them in and get used to them. They may give you blisters initially but once you break them, and your soft weak feet in it will not be a problem. Once you get used to them you will love them.
I got used to them in 1999 so a new pair is not a big deal for me anymore.

Don't buy them 48 hours before hiking the narrows.

Buy them, wear them around, soften up the straps, harden up your precious, soft, supple feet and never look back.

THESE SANDALS ARE UNCOMFORTABLE. THEY CAUSE BLISTERS. THE STRAPS DRY SLOWLY. THEY ARE HEAVY. THE SOLE ITSELF IS ABRASIVE AND UNCOMFORTABLE. AND YES, I HAVE THE CORRECT SIZE. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THESE.

Comments about Chaco Z/1 Unaweep Sandals - Men's:

Great sandal. One of the best. The firmer foot-bed does not absorb foot sweat like other foamer foot-beds making it less prone to foot stink. Easy to wash and care for. I have worn mine all around the world and they have never let me down. The Vibram soles have barely begun to wear. I have worn them for a total of 10 months for EVERYTHING. The hardest day I put in them was probably a 10 mile day with a pack doing trail work. I would also recommend the Chaco Z/2 sandal for heavier hiking, swimming, or climbing because it has the big toe strap and offers better stability. There are really only two issues with them. First they do take a while to break in because of the solid foot-beds. I would say about a month and a half to two months of straight wearing to really break them in good. The only issue with them as listed in my Con was that the sole has started to pull away from the foot-bed or delaminate. I assume this is due to the newer lighter type of rubber that Chaco is using in the Unaweep soles. I am certain that Chaco will relaminate or replace the soles through their excellent return & repair program.

Best sandals you can buy. Period. I use them for everything, from hiking, bicycle commuting, walking, going out, the list goes on... I have no issues at all with these. If you get them dirty, just throw 'em in the wash and they're as good as new. Also you can send them back to Chaco in Colorado and they can put new/different straps on them, adjust the strap length, or even put a new sole on the bottom. They will last you a lifetime!

Comments about Chaco Z/1 Unaweep Sandals - Men's:

I bought these for a 80 mile trip into Kings Canyon in 2007. I only planned on using them at the campsite and did not do any hiking with them. The biggest problem was that any moisture contact (i.e. cross a small creek or step in a puddle) and the nylon straps caused considerable chaffing along the ankles and across the top of my feet. By Day 4 or 5, I could no longer tolerate to wear them.

So, the soles were great, but I could not adapt to the nylon straps. Now on the flip side, I had a friend wear them exclusively on the Annapurna Circuit with little problems, so to each their own. Just beware, these things ate my feet up.

These are great sandals, don't get me wrong. However, I've had a few problems with them. First, my feet always complain when I first put them on after not having worn them for a while. There's the arch to get used to, which I actually like, but beyond that the footbed is just rough on feet that haven't been toughened up or that have been worn raw from, say, running long distances in other shoes the day before. Second, my straps don't stay adjusted. It's common for me to have to loosen the strap going across my toes after a long walk because it has tightened en route. Some websites recommend repeatedly washing your Chacos to prevent this from happening, as washing helps remove the wax that the straps come coated with. Maybe I just haven't broken in the straps enough?

Great product. i've had a pair of chacos since 97 and have worn Z1, Z2, tokays and chongs ever since. my latest pair is a Unaweep Z1. i went camping over the weekend and did some river exploration and they performed as expected. the new design lightens them up considerably.

my only beef is the lack of half sizes. an 11.5 would be most ideal. a size 12 is way too sloppy feeling. the 11 i got fits ok.
