The older style waistpack was far more practical than this one. The construction is still strong, but I had to make modifications before I was satisfied. This waistpack still seems better than the competition's. I use this pack while I'm fishing. It holds my valuables (keys, wallet, etc.). Here're the problems as I see it:
- Buckle is next to the pouch instead of at the end of the webbing about 1.5 foot from the pouch--as was the case with the old pack. (I bought webbing and had my wife fix this problem.)
- They used a cheap rubberized loop to tuck the loose end of the webbing into. As a result, the loose webbing constantly came out of the loop. It also curled the webbing, which caused additional problems. (I bought Triglide Slides at a store and got rid of the loop, which immediately fixed the related problems.
- As a fly fisherman, I always have a rod in my hand while on the river. Often I had to use both hands to zip/unzip the pack because the zipper goest past the horizontal and curves downward on each side. (I fixed this by superglueing the zipper's teeth past the horizontal on each side.)
- They added two pull tabs on each side for the main compartment (only). Sometimes I didn't know whether I zipped or unzipped the waistpack without looking. This was a problem because of the content of the pack. (I cut the second pull tab off, leaving the slider body intact. Now for each compartment there's a single pull tab and zipping/unzipping happens in the same direction.)

After all the above fixes, I'm satisfied with the waistpack. If JanSport only increased the size of the main compartment of the previous pack, leaving everything else alone, they would have saved me time and effort.

Comments about JanSport Fifth Avenue Waistpack:

I've used this waist pack almost daily for a couple of years. It holds what I need (wallet, change, phone, keys, pens and notepad, sunglasses, a few other items), and it's easy to get things in and out. Since I don't have to put it down, I don't tend to leave it places.

The strap is very adjustable -- I have worn the bag as a waist pack, a hip pack, and a shoulder bag. It works all these ways. Mine has elastic bands rather than clips to hold extra strap -- get the job done but were the first things to look worn. If I always used the strap at one length I'd cut just off the excess and get rid of the bands.

Otherwise the bag has been extremely durable; even though I occasionally stuff it quite full, I've never had problems with the seams or zipper, and the fabric does not appear worn or faded.

This pack is made of light weight, soft material. It is comfortable and allows easy access to the contents while being worn. It expands to accommodate lots of stuff, given it's small size. I've used (and abused) mine for three years with no problems. Lining up the snaps to click the straps together can be frustrating. The waist band is long enough to fit XXL waists.

I have had 2 of this packs and while useful the new clips are bad they can slide together at a angle and the only want to get them apart again is braking them ...also the straps are to thin and will roll up into a rope rather then laying flat after a few months
