The only one I have used so far
This is the only gel that I have used so far so I have nothing to compare it to, but I do like the effect. I took this gel about 15 minutes before I ran 7 miles. It did not bother my stomach at all, in fact it made my stomach wall feel like it was lightly coated, kind of like taking pepto bismol. The taste was not bad, I had the apple cinnamon but taste bud is truely a personla preference so I can't speak for you. I have not used these mid-race yet, and I am a bit concerned because you need a good swig of water to wash it down. I guess just use it near a water stop during a race to solve that issue.
Tastes too good to be energy fuel
I like Hammer products in general, but the Nocciola (aka Hazelnut Chocoloate) flavor is AWESOME. This is hands down the best flavor of any gel. It's a great reward when pushing it on those runs. Really good on Stinger waffles when you need something more solid. In general I like the Hammer Gels the best over other brands, they don't have the after taste of others and can be bought in bulk containers. I use a squeezy bottle for longer runs. For my weekday workouts these are nice because they are lower calorie than other brands, and provide just the right amount of energy for me.
Give them a try
Months ago I went out and bought two of almost every brand of gel I could find in the store. With long training runs and a lot of races I get to use gels fairly often. I recommend that you personally try a few different brands and flavors to find what works best for you. My taste buds and stomach say one thing, but yours say something completely different. Hammer Gels where the first gel for me to try. I like them a lot, not too sweet, not too tart. They are thicker than GU’s but thinner than Clif Shots. They seem to sit a little heavier on my stomach and need a little more water than others. I really like hammer gels, it doesn’t feel really gritty or sugary on your teeth when you use for a while. I just wish that the creative packaging (the hammer shape) didn’t get caught on everything.
Best So Far
I've had Gu, Stinger, and Vega. They are OK. The Apple-Cinnamon flavored Hammer gel is far superior. Montana Huckleberry, a close contender. This is a slower absorbing gel, which is nice since there's no spike in energy followed by a crash. I take one 15 minutes-ish into a half-marathon run, then every 30-45 minutes, and I feel like it helps keep cramping at bay as well as give an energy boost.
Low sugar, high carb, goes down easy while working
The chocolate tastes like the center of a chocolate croissant. The other flavors are very nice as well. What I like is that this not only tastes like a great but the sugar is so low you can consume several to hit carb intake goals without spiking your sugar levels. This is very important for people with sugar conditions but also for targeted nutrition in general. General rule of thumb: 60g carbs while cycling, that’s achieved with two of these.
Great supplement
I took about 6 of these on my 16 mile Half Dome hike. They aren't the easiest things to choke down, but they are a lot better than some of the others I've tried. The consistency is somewhat like a half-melted gummy bears... Not that appetizing. Of all the flavors, I favored the Huckleberry one the best. The energy they give you is undeniable, which is more important than the taste in my book. Definitely a must-have for any strenuous hike / activity!
Red Rider Watching Sugar Intake
I carry 3 of these when I ride my bicycle, and use them when feel my sugar levels dropping after 25 miles in the pedals. I find the Raspberry taste is very acceptable. I find it is always difficult to locate low sugar items that can provide a boost when it is needed.
Excellent energy gels
Hammer gels are among my favorites, I also use GU. I like these because they're not sickeningly sweet, and really do help prevent/stave off fatigue. These are a convenient size to put in a saddle pack, and I often bring several, depending on the length of the ride. One thing to notice is caffeine. If this matters to you, be sure to check the caffeine content, as some not-so-obvious flavors (i.e. Tropical) contain it, while several others don't.
It works!
I’ve been using Hammer Gel for several years. It really does work for me. When I’m fading on a hard ride, Hammer Gel gives me a boost. My favorites are Vanilla and Huckleberry. Banana is great, too, but for some reason it’s hard to find.
Love Hammer Gel, Disappointed in selection
As an Ironman Triathlete, I am very particular about my nutritional needs. I have been using espresso, vanilla and chocolate hammer gel in packets for several years along with perpetuem, endurolytes, perpetuem solids and Recoverite. All of which I have been able to get at REI, making it a one stop shop for nutritional needs. REI has been cutting down on store selection but at least the product has been available online. However, now only two flavors (which are unpalatable when taking for longer than a couple hours at a time) are available in the packets. Two more are available in large volume containers but force the use of a gel flask which does not work for my needs. Please bring back a better assortment of hammer gel flavors, at least in the online channel.
