Comments about Katadyn Carbon Cartridge:
Bought this to use with my Katadyn Pocket filter as the Pocket left some mineral taste in the water. This helped eliminate almost all of that. Made the water from the river at Yellowstone taste like Artisan water. One thing that did bother me though, was the fact that after about 2 days in the back-country the material that prevents the carbon powder from escaping the filter came loose and allowed a lot of carbon to escape into my water bottle and made a hassle to clean. So make sure you pack the powder in tight so the white filter at the bottom doesn't come loose.

Comments about Katadyn Carbon Cartridge:
So I have been using this little cartridge since I was in the Marine Corps in the early-mid 90's. The one I have says PUR on it but Katadyn has not changed a thing. Always been great add on to my PUR Guide purifier (.03 micron filtration plus iodine impregnated matrix). Does a great job of getting iodine and other tastes out of water.
Easy to use and you could probably use it on any filter system. I have never had any problems with the hoses slipping off. In fact, I usually have to work them off. Fits both 63MM and the smaller opening Nalgene bottles.
Carbon packets are getting harder to come by though. Although I have not replaced the carbon in mine for about three years and I just used it with no taste, or color.

Comments about Katadyn Carbon Cartridge:
There aren't a lot of standalone charcoal filters out there so I appreciate the effort but they have a ways to go to get their five stars on this one.
The charcoal comes in a packet. You open the filter, pour it in and screw the two filter halves back together. That part is fairly simple.
It does do the job, which in my case is removing the chlorine I add to my water to kill viruses, but take a look at the picture of the filter. The inlet and outlet are tapered which makes it difficult to get hoses to stay put. Even using a clamp, I found it difficult to get the hose to stay on. An annular ridge would've been helpful in keeping the clamp on while still facilitating getting the hose off drying and cleaning the filter.
It's important to dry filters between trips so as not to get things growing in them in storage. It was necessary to open the filter to let the charcoal dry out. Inevitably some charcoal granules would get into the threads and on the O ring and it was a pain getting them all cleaned off. It would be nice if they supplied some sort of mesh to put over the charcoal to keep it in place.
I recommend this filter because it does the job, but I'm still looking for one that is more convenient to use.
