Have had this stove for more than 20 years and it still works like new. I replaced the original old yellow pump from the early years, changed O-rings and normal maintenance. My stove was one of the originals (before the Shaker-valve days), but was converted to a Shaker-valve by a MSR tech who also replaced the old cloth fiber-covered fuel hose with one of the brass covered flex hoses. I don't use the stove to simmer and cook, just hit a boil quickly for freeze dried dinners and a hot drink after a long day in the canoe or on the trail. Never let me down, regardless of weather, and I expect that it will last to be handed down to the grandkids...
Got this stove 5 years ago and have not found a better stove that i would replace it with. MSR did a great job with this stove, it is very light, very easy to clean and very easy to operate. I am a cycle tourist and have taken this stove over to france, vermont, ny, and many more. Glad to have a very light stove that works great. My fellow cyclist just got one because he saw the east and abilities of my stove. Also, half of the other people i cycle with have this stove as well. another guy has the dragonfly but that just makes too much noise. I fill this thing with 93 unleaded gas and it performs just fine. Thanks for the great product.
I have used this stove on many wilderness trips, from 4 days to 45 days. They are simply the best, and very easy to fix when something (seldom) goes wrong. The self-cleaning pin prevents clogs in the fuel line, and I've never had a ""broken"" WhisperLite that a little tinkering couldn't fix. I have used them on these backcountry trips through a wilderness tripping camp, and the camp swears by the WhisperLite as well. Every trip gets sent out with at least one, in case weather or fire conditions forbid the use of a good old camping fire. I have no complaints about the WhisperLite, and just purchased one for my own adventures separate from the camp! Great gear for great trips.
I was cleaning out my attic today and found my MSR Whisperlight stove. I thought it was lost because I hadn't seen it in over a decade. I have used the stove hundreds of times and was super excited to see it again. Interesting thing about the stove is that I'm pretty sure I bought it about 1987 when I was working a backpacking store. It's 2018 now. I wanted to see if the stove is still made in case I needed parts. I found the MSR website which said they've been making the stove for over 25 years. I'm pretty sure it's longer than 25 years. There weren't websites when I bought my stove. I took the stove out and filled it with fresh fuel. It took a little bit of tapping and shaking but I got it all cleaned out and within ten minutes it was burning like the day I bought it. This is simply an amazing piece of equipment. Thank you MSR.
The best suggestion I can give about using this stove is read the instructions...and follow them! All of them! Practice using it before you get in the field, then go back and re-read the instructions and practice using it some more. Once you've got it down, you will not be disappointed. Simmering takes awhile to figure out (reason for 4 stars) but can be done based on how much you pressurize (8-10 pumps max!). Increadibly reliable, lightweight, fuel efficient, stable, easy to clean and service in the field when necessary. Again, read the instructions and practice and you won't have some of the issues you'll read about in some of the other reviews.
This is without a doubt one of the best backpacking stoves ever made. I have used this model on backpacking trips for well over 10 years and it has proven to be both durable and reliable. Not to mention very compact and lightweight. In my opinion these are the most important attributes in a backpacking stove and they far outweigh the cons. The cons being that it is difficult to light (needing to be primed) and that it doesn't modulate heat well (simmering)... both of these cons I can get over considering what a great value this little stove is. Also, with practice it is very easy to prime and light the stove with one light.
I bought one of these several years ago for camping, but have found that it is an essential piece of equipment in my emergency contingency plan. The simple fact that you can use several types of fuel makes this stove an obvious choice. While the few ounces this stove may cost you if you follow the mass-conscientious circles; it is more than worth the extra weight. The utility gained for a small amount of extra weight far outweighs (pun intended) the extra poundage of this stove. I have also found it very handy for emergency situations, and given the different fuels that it is capable of burning, it is simply the best portable stove out there.
Great product. Tried and true design. Reliable and easy to operate and maintain. Bacon on the beach for breakfast. Does it get any better?
Bought this stove for weekend backpacking trips. Used it in the wilderness this past weekend and it performed perfectly for the task I bought it for...Boiling water. Lighting the stove is a little tricky to get the hang of but once I figured it out (let a small amount of fuel into the priming cup, light and WAIT) it works great. It packs up small and light. The ground shield and wind screen worked great as well. The steaks were cooking on a flat rock in the camp fire, the taters were in the coals and the green beans were cooked on the stove. Boiled water for cocoa before bed and coffee in the morning. I could not be happier with the stove.
Purchased it in Australia in 2005, used it non stop while biking and traveling around. Very light and tough and the fuel lasts for ages. Still using it today, never cleaned it nor changed anything except the fuel pump this month, just because i broke it not because of wear and tear. Never used in snow nor high altitudes. I highly recommend it to any one. As for the negatives, i would prefer the fuel lead to be about 1cm longer but its not that important. But the one thing that always bothered me big time and that has not changed in the new pump, is the fuel flow regulation. Don't think about it any longer, just get one and you will never regret it!
