Comments about Granite Gear Ruff Rider Dog Pack - Medium:

The pack feels extremely durable and lends itself well to our dogs size. He's a 70 pound coonhound so he has a barrel chest and a slim back so as long as we put he pack up towards his head and make sure it's tightened up, it doesn't drift or slide at all. We got the medium for him and it has tons of growing room as well. As long as we don't overburden the pack he walks like he doesn't even know it's there, and actually slows him to a better walking/hiking pace than he normally shows. Feels like it's made out of the same materials as my Weekend pack and has convenient clips for the slack in he straps. I highly recommend this pack to anyone that wants to bring their dog along and have them carry their own weight!

Comments about Granite Gear Ruff Rider Dog Pack - Medium:

i own 3 dogs, and 3 packs. i have this one, the kelty i also bought from rei, and an ollydog i bought on sale. this one shifts the least, even on our rolypoly mutt. it is the only pack that doesnt need the loads to be *perfectly* balanced to avoid shifting. it looks and feels sturdily made. we have completed many 3-4 hr runs/hikes in the mts and have never had a problem. roly likes her pack and is always happy to carry it. i have read other people saying (inc cesar) that packs make em behave better.....that is my one complaint about the g.g. pack... that hasnt happened for me, LOL. maybe it's the dog.

Comments about Granite Gear Ruff Rider Dog Pack - Medium:

This is a great overnight pack for my 80lb labrador retriever. She wears it well and has used it with up two 3 days worth of food.

The pro's: she can carry her own food and supplies; two large pockets on either side will hold her small collapsable bowl, food, ball, and extra rope for her guy out.

The con's: the pack rubs some of her hair loose and attracts it to the lining; a little febreeze is needed afterwards to help with the odors.

Overall, I would recommend it and I think it's a great pack for trail dogs.

Comments about Granite Gear Ruff Rider Dog Pack - Medium:

After a different brand wore out in less than a year, I decided to go with GG this time. Our first trip was nearly 3 weeks backpacking with my pooch carrying all her own weight. She is less than 2 YO and "explores" the forest/ponds often, other than mud this pack hasn't shown any wear at all (even when the bottom half was submerged while she drank, it kept water out). I never put more than 10 lbs on her 50 lb body, and the pack held it without concern. Sometimes it needed a little balancing but even if a little off it still holds position on her back well.

It doubled as my bear bag at night and made it through freezing temps and cold thunderstorms hanging in a tree.

At first I wished the sternum strap had a clip to it so I wouldn't have to slip it on her neck, but then again it's just one more thing to wear down (and my pooch is fine with wearing it so it isn't ever a problem getting it on her). The belly strap does obviously have a clip and is solid. A handle on top might be helpful, but I loved the plastic D-ring on the back for clipping her leash to!

I intend for my dog to give it heavy use in all seasons, and when it's time for a new one, I'll be going back for another.

My airedale has had one of these for 10 years... IT carries all his stuff and I have had zero issues with duribility. The pack has a simple strp system and a D-ring on the back fopr a leash. Though not wateproof, things stay fairly dry. The top pad does bunch up a little when he pulls on the leash and the pack sometimes looks sdieways on him.

Comments about Granite Gear Ruff Rider Dog Pack - Medium:

My sheltie has done great with this pack. The front strap stabilizes well and the ring on the back is a nice leash hook for longer trips. The pack washes easily if mud splatters on it and a little febreeze takes the doggie odor out well. Only problem is loading properly. If there is any uneven distribution it shifts and rides crooked very fast. The girth is not heavy enough to secure the load well and prevent this. Overall a nice pack for easy day hikes when the dog can share a bit of the load, he almost struts when wearing it feeling very important to be helping.

Comments about Granite Gear Ruff Rider Dog Pack - Medium:

This was the third pack my 75lb boxer had tried and this one (so far) is the winner. We bought the ruff wear palisades pack, which after our 3 day backpacking trip became beyond annoying; the pack kept shifting no matter what we did.

I agree that this pack does cause some irritation but it stays pretty balanced and allows you to adjust where the pack sits on the dog which I find great.

Comments about Granite Gear Ruff Rider Dog Pack - Medium:

It's really nice being able to pack all of Lola's gear for a 3 day excursion into this pack. Seemed decently waterproof during our last backpacking trip which consisted of pouring rain, and blizzardesque snow. (Yes, we all still had fun).

My main concern is despite how tight/loose/differently loaded the pack is, Lola ALWAYS chaffs HORRIDLY on the girth strap. She's a trooper, but this is obviously concerning. Now's the debate of try a new pack, or try and get her a dog jacket to go underneath that she won't overheat in...

I use this for my border collie. He likes it in the winter, but it's a little warm for him in the summer. Two things that could be improved -
Unless the load is precisely balanced, it will shift to one side. On the last trip it did this and his food got soaked (in a Ruffwear dog bowl). I think waterproofing is a must for something like this.
