Comments about Granite Gear Ruff Rider Dog Pack - Small:
My dog backpacks with me from the northern rockies to the Colorado plataeu, forest to desert canyon. We are often bushwhacking in Montana. The pack has proven itself after 5 years. It has some scuffs from rocks and trees, but no tears or punctures.
I have a 45 pound Aussie Mix and its the perfect size for her food and bowl. Then she packs out the trash. Sometimes I give her the water filter, Fuel canister, or even a few cans of beer. And its light enough to strap to your pack to unburden your dog in any situation.
Its not waterproof, so seal the packs contents. Its nice to not worry about if your dog goes swimming.

Comments about Granite Gear Ruff Rider Dog Pack - Small:
We just added a second dog to our household and, after collar and crate, it looks like it's time for a second Granite Gear pack. We've tried several brands over the decades and dogs, always used as backpacks for 2-10 day trips, loaded with 1/5 to 1/4 of the dog's weight . Every other pack either self destructed, or made the dog sore, or messed with the dog's balance too much.
Although we really like this pack, three significant improvements could be made for backpackers moving over difficult or steep terrain. One is a lift handle to help the dog over big obstacles. Their balance isn't perfect wearing a pack. You want to "spot" them a bit. You could also use that handle to carry the dog's pack when terrain is so challenging that it's unsafe for the dog to wear it. Our dogs do not wear packs traversing boulder fields, for instance. Or during creek crossings.
Two is a second belly strap, maybe optional, to help hold the pack in place when the dog jumps down off of that big obstacle or is moving down a very steep trail. The pack holds its position very well on the level or going uphill, but going downhill you'll find you have to stop and readjust it for your dog to keep him comfortable.
And three would be an internal strap or tiedown or even a webbing pocket so that, as the dog's load gets smaller, it can be cinched in place a bit, preferably toward the shoulder. We solve this problem by gradually filling the dog's pack with the camp trash so the pack never empties, but sometimes you run out of stuff that you're willing to put into a dog pack!
That said, no pack we've seen offers as much as the Granite, so we'll take another as is. : D

Okay not to say I'm disappointed but my dogs under arms are rubbed raw after a 3 day trip. I most likely will not use the pack again. If I can find a pack with more padding for his under arms I'll get it.

Comments about Granite Gear Ruff Rider Dog Pack - Small:
This is a great pack, sets up easy and on a very active/adventurous rottweiler, it stays put. the saddle bags are incorporated right to the belly loop, so as she gallops throught the wood, they don't. This pack can handle anything you can put it to. very tough. It could use a handel on the harness along with a center brest strap attatched to the front shoulder strap.

Comments about Granite Gear Ruff Rider Dog Pack - Small:
This pack is great, it is easy to set up. It kind of depends on the dog whether they like it or not, we own two Australian Shepherd/Sheltie mix dogs, brother and sister. We took them on a short trip with us, and the boy loved the pack while the girl would just sit down and wouldn't move if we put it on her. The boy is more active in general than the girl, and in better shape than her. If you know your dog, you'll probably know if this is the thing for them or not.

Comments about Granite Gear Ruff Rider Dog Pack - Small:
I love this pack. I bought this for my 2 year old Labrador retriever mix and although she thought it was a little odd when I first put it on her, I noticed no discomfort while hiking. Allows for unrestricted movement and is a great way to have your companion carry their own food and water on longer hikes.
